Bardfield Saling

The Salings is a civil parish in the Braintree District in Essex, England. It includes Bardfield Saling and Great Saling. The civil parish has 475 inhabitants (2011).

Andrewsfield Aerodrome (ICAO: EGSL) is located 4 NM (7.4 km; 4.6 mi) west northwest of Braintree, Essex, England, formerly RAF Andrews Field. Both the grass runways are 18 m (59 ft) wide and at night serve as a single 36 m (118 ft) runway. It has one sock which is of an orange colour. Andrewsfield Aerodrome functions as an important reliever airport for Stansted airport. It has a CAA Ordinary Licence (Number P789) that allows flights for the public transport of passengers or for flying instruction as authorised by the licensee (Andrewsfield Air Operations Limited).

Royal Air Force Andrews Field or more simply RAF Andrews Field (also known as RAF Andrewsfield and RAF Great Saling) is a former Royal Air Force station located 4 miles (6.4 km) east-northeast of Great Dunmow Essex, England. Originally designated as Great Saling when designed and under construction, the base was renamed "Andrews Field" in honour of United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) General Frank M. Andrews, who was killed in an aircraft crash in Iceland in May 1943. Andrews Field was primarily the home of the USAAF Ninth Air Force 322d Bombardment Group during the Second World War, which flew the Martin B-26 Marauder medium bomber. After being transferred to the Air Ministry in late 1944, it was used briefly by RAF Fighter Command for Gloster Meteor jet fighter testing before being finally closed in late 1945.Today the remains of the airfield are located on private property, which is used for agricultural, with a small portion used by the Andrewsfield Flying Club.

Great Saling is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of The Salings, in the Braintree district of the county of Essex, England. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 Census was 282. It is near the town of Braintree. The hamlet of Blake End was part of the parish. On 1 April 2019 the parish was abolished and merged with Bardfield Saling to form "The Salings".The village had on its green what was reputed to be the largest elm tree in England. With a girth of 22 feet 6 inches and a height of 40 metres, the elm was identified by the botanist R. H. Richens as an Ulmus × hollandica hybrid, before it succumbed to Dutch Elm Disease in the 1970s.The village features the first aerodrome to be built by the Americans in this country. List of units using the B-26 Marauder during World War II The aerodrome is named after one of the famous generals of the American air force, Frank M. Andrews. The runways were built with the hardcore that came from the ruins of the London blitz. The parish church is dedicated to St James, and is in the Diocese of Chelmsford. It is Grade II* listed.

The village has a pub and a bowling green and had a population of 1,300 in 2011 census.

Bannister Green Halt railway station was a station in Bannister Green, Essex, England. The station was 13 miles 37 chains (21.67 km) from Bishop's Stortford on the Bishop's Stortford to Braintree branch line (Engineer's Line Reference BSB). The station closed in 1952.
