The following is a timeline of the history of the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, US.

The Fourth Avenue Historic District is a historic district in downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. The district was the center of finance and banks for the city during the decades surrounding the turn of the 20th century. Many ornate structures still exist from that era, including the location of the Pittsburgh Stock Exchange on the corner of Fourth Avenue and Smithfield Street from 1864-1903, the now vacant lot of its location at 229 Fourth Avenue from 1903 to 1962 and the still standing structure of the Exchange from 1962 until it closed in 1974. It is roughly bounded by Smithfield Street, Third Avenue, Market Square Place, and Fifth Avenue. The period of significance for the District is from 1871 (when the initial phase of the Dollar Bank building construction was finished) to 1934 (50 years before preparation of the nomination to the NRHP).Some of its structures are: Burke Building, 211 4th Ave. (1836) Dollar Bank, 340 4th Ave. (1871) Pittsburgh Stock Exchange, 333 4th Ave. Arrott Building, 401 4th Ave. (1902) Benedum-Trees Building, 223 4th Ave. (1905) The Carlyle, 306 4th Ave. (1906) Skinny Building, 241 Forbes Ave. (1926) Investment Building, 239 4th Ave. (1927)The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 5, 1985. A boundary increase was added on March 20, 2013.

The Warner Centre is a former theater and concert hall located at 332 Fifth Avenue in Downtown Pittsburgh. It opened as the Grand Theatre on March 7, 1918, with Douglas Fairbanks in Headin' South and Winifred Westover in Her Husband’s Wife. The theater was renamed Warner Theatre on January 2, 1930. In 1983 the theater was closed, the auditorium was demolished, and a two story shopping center named Warner Center was built on the site.It was turned into an indoor shopping mall. A food court there closed in 2003.

Fourth Avenue is a street in downtown Pittsburgh. Some of the structures that Fourth Avenue boasts include: Pittsburgh City County Building (1917) Allegheny County Office Building (1931) Grant Building (1932) River Vue (1957) Oxford Centre (1983) PPG Place (1983)Fourth Avenue also hosts many of the structures of the Fourth Avenue Historic District.

The Tower at PNC Plaza is a 33-story skyscraper in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It is the corporate headquarters of the PNC Financial Services Group and has approximately 800,000 square feet (74,000 m2), standing 33 stories (545 feet) tall. Nearby buildings totaling 37,000 square feet (3,400 m2), were purchased by PNC and deconstructed to make space for the Tower at PNC Plaza. It is located at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Wood Street, where PNC and its predecessors have been based since 1858. The project was estimated to cost $400 million when announced in 2011 (or $482 million today).Construction began in spring of 2012 and was completed in October 2015. The tower is one of the greenest high-rises ever built, and even exceeds the current criteria for a LEED Platinum certified building. The Tower features numerous sustainable attributes such as an operable double-skin facade, an onsite grey water reuse system, locally sourced building materials, fixtures and furniture made from recycled materials, and numerous other green strategies to substantially reduce the environmental impact of the building. Some of these features enable the Tower's heating and cooling systems to operate in a "net-zero-energy state" up to 30% of the year. This is accomplished by its innovative solar chimney, which creates a stack effect through the core of the building to ventilate excess heat without the need for mechanical ventilation. The Tower's sloped roof acts as a solar collector and is positioned facing south. The tower's "topping off" ceremony was held Tuesday, June 24, 2014, with William Demchak, PNC chairman, president and CEO, and Gary Saulson, director of corporate real estate hosting it on site. The tower officially opened on October 2, 2015.

The Frank & Seder Building is a 30-metre (98 ft), 7-story, former department store building completed in 1918 on Smithfield Avenue in downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. The building is a contributing structure in the Pittsburgh Central Downtown Historic District.As of 2019, the historic building is being renovated as a mixed-use facility, Smith & Fifth, with 40 apartments on the upper two levels, 160,000 square feet (15,000 m2) of office space, and 25,000 square feet (2,300 m2) of retail space spread over the first 2 floors, and underground parking.

The Commonwealth Building, originally known as the Commonwealth Trust Bank, is a 300 feet (91 m) tall skyscraper in Pittsburgh. It was completed in 1906 and has 21 floors. It is tied with The Carlyle and Washington Plaza for 26th tallest building in the city.

The Farmers Bank Building was a 27-story, 105 m (344 ft) skyscraper in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania completed in 1902 and demolished on May 25, 1997. The University of Pittsburgh's online digital library states the building was constructed in 1903 and had 24 stories. To a generation of Pittsburgh sports fans the building is well remembered for being resurfaced in the mid 1960 in a failed rehabilitation but also fondly for a 15 story high mural of Roberto Clemente, Bill Mazeroski, Jack Lambert, Mean Joe Greene and Mario Lemieux completed in 1992 by Judy Penzer, who was killed in the crash of TWA Flight 800 four years later. For the five years the mural existed it was often the centerpiece for national networks cutting to or from games while they were in town for sporting events. Rockwell International owned the building starting in the mid-1960s and used it as its global headquarters, selling it in early 1972 and consolidating its headquarters staff in the U.S. Steel Tower blocks away.The building was imploded by Controlled Demolition, Inc. on the afternoon of May 25, 1997. In its place, a low-rise department store named Lazarus was built on the site. That building has since been extensively redesigned and now operates as a condominium development named Piatt Place.

The Carlyle is a 300 ft (91m) tall skyscraper at Fourth Avenue and Wood Street in Pittsburgh. It was completed in 1906 and has 21 floors. It is tied with Washington Plaza and the Commonwealth Building for 27th tallest building in the city.

Tower Two-Sixty, alternatively known as “The Gardens at Market Square” or “The Gardens,” is a Millcraft Investments skyscraper in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. Construction began in 2013 and was substantially completed in 2016. The $107 million, LEED CS Silver-certified tower consists of 18 floors and is located the Market Square and Point Park University sections of Downtown Pittsburgh. The tower includes a 197-room Hilton Garden Inn Hotel and Market Square Garage, 321-car parking complex managed by Alco Parking. It includes 20,000 square feet of street level retail space, 130,000 square feet of Class-A "tower office" floor space and multiple restaurants. Revel + Roost, previously known as Roost Fifty New American Kitchen, is a two-floor restaurant. Roost hosts upscale dining on the second floor, while Revel has an ultra-lounge atmosphere downstairs. Pirata is another restaurant tenant, offering Caribbean-style food and more than 200 rums. Pizzuvio, a fine casual Neapolitan pizzeria with handmade wood-fired ovens, is also located in the tower. Millie’s, a second location Pittsburgh-based small batch ice creamery originating in Shadyside. In 2015, it was announced that commercial real estate company JLL would be the building’s anchor and namesake tenant, and re-identify the building as JLL Center at Tower Two-Sixty. JLL also serves as the building’s property manager. Other tenants in the building include Merrill Lynch, Coury Financial Group, McGuireWoods, and Millcraft itself.Millcraft, JLL, and its partners have received several awards for Tower Two-Sixty including the Urban Land Institute award for Transformative Place, Master Builders’ Association of Western Pennsylvania Award, NAIOP Pittsburgh’s Best Mixed Use Project .

Arrott Building is a skyscraper located at Fourth Avenue and Wood Street in downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was built in 1902 and was designed by Frederick J. Osterling. The building and several surrounding financial buildings are part of the Fourth Avenue Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Arrott Building was added to the list of Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation Historic Landmarks in 2000.The building opened in May 2021 as The Industrialist Hotel, part of the Autograph Collection by Marriott.

Downtown Pittsburgh, colloquially referred to as the Golden Triangle, and officially the Central Business District, is the urban downtown center of Pittsburgh. It is located at the confluence of the Allegheny River and the Monongahela River whose joining forms the Ohio River. The triangle is bounded by the two rivers. The area features offices for major corporations such as PNC Bank, U.S. Steel, PPG, Bank of New York Mellon, Heinz, Federated Investors, and Alcoa. It is where the fortunes of such industrial barons as Andrew Carnegie, Henry Clay Frick, Henry J. Heinz, Andrew Mellon and George Westinghouse were made. It contains the site where the French fort, Fort Duquesne, once stood.
