St Cuthbert's Church, Halsall

Halsall is a village and civil parish in West Lancashire, England, located close to Ormskirk on the A5147 and Leeds and Liverpool Canal.

Halsall railway station was a railway station in the village of Halsall, Lancashire, on the Liverpool, Southport and Preston Junction Railway. Situated north of Carr Moss Lane, it opened on 1 November 1887 and closed on 26 September 1938. The tracks were lifted shortly after the line closed in 1952, though the station building survives as a private residence. The "Altcar Bob" service once operated through this station.

New Cut Lane Halt was a railway station between Shirdley Hill and Halsall in Lancashire. The station opened in July 1906 as a halt on the Liverpool, Southport and Preston Junction Railway, and consisted of simple cinder based platforms at track level. It was situated to the south of the roadbridge on New Cut Lane, to which it was connected by wooden steps. The station closed to passengers on 26 September 1938 and the tracks were lifted shortly after the line closed in 1952.

Plex Moss Lane Halt was a railway station between Halsall and Barton in Lancashire. The station opened in July 1906 as a halt on the Liverpool, Southport and Preston Junction Railway, and consisted of simple cinder based platforms at track level which required steps to be lowered from the coach for passenger access. It was situated to the south of the road bridge on Plex Moss Lane, to which it was connected by wooden steps. The station closed to passengers on 26 September 1938 and the tracks were lifted shortly after the line closed in 1952. In 2015 the bridge and trackbed were plainly visible, the latter as a wide band of mature trees.

Barton was a railway station in the village of Barton, Lancashire, on the Liverpool, Southport and Preston Junction Railway. Situated to the south of the roadbridge on Station Road (off the A5147), the station opened on 1 November 1887, and was renamed Downholland on 2 June 1924. Downholland largely served as the terminus for trains coming from Southport (initially Southport Central, then Southport Chapel Street from 1901), though through trains to Altcar and Hillhouse operated until 1926. The Barton Branch was notable for the "Altcar Bob" service, introduced in July 1906. The station closed to passengers on 26 September 1938, though the line remained open for goods traffic until 21 January 1952. The tracks were lifted shortly thereafter. The site now lies within the boundaries of a local nature reserve, and the heavily overgrown platforms can still be seen.

Barton is a small village in the county of Lancashire, England. It is approximately 4 miles (6 km) west from Ormskirk, and less than 1 mile (2 km) west from the A5147 road. Barton sits on the West Lancashire Coastal Plain, and is 5 miles (8 km) from the Irish Sea coast. The village lies within the civil parish of Downholland.Barton's listing in the 1086 Domesday Book shows Roger the Poitevin as lord and Tenant-in-chief. At the time Barton was in the Hundred of West Derby in the county of Cheshire.The Manor of Barton was held by the Clifton family and, from about 1212, by the Barton family. The last Barton heiress, Fleetwood Barton (1595-1664) married into the Shuttleworth family (her first marriage to Viscount Molyneux was annulled). Her husband, Richard Shuttleworth of Gawthorpe Hall, supported the Parliamentary side in the English Civil War. The Shuttleworths held the manor until 1833, when it was sold to the Preston industrialist, George Jacson.The village had its own Barton railway station, which opened in 1887. The line was closed completely in 1952.

Shirdley Hill is a small village in the civil parish of Halsall, Lancashire, England, and is situated on the West Lancashire Coastal Plain. It is reached by B roads from either the A5147 or the A570. An £80,000 redevelopment of the village green, completed in 2009, provided the green with a new pond, benches and a flower bed.Shirdley Hill railway station was on the Liverpool, Southport and Preston Junction Railway, though the station closed in 1938, and the track was lifted in 1964. A plaque on the corner of Shaws Garth marks the site.In 2013, the Village installed an Automated Defibrillator near the Bus Stop. Shirdley Hill gave its name to "Shirdley Hill Sand" which was used in a number of industrial processes, particularly glassmaking.

Tracks from Butts Lane Halt to Shirdley Hill were left in place until 1964 for the storage of excursion coaches. Nothing remains of the station, with the site now occupied by a road named Shaws Garth, just off Renacres Lane. The road is named in memory of the last stationmaster, Thomas Shaw, and a plaque marks the location of the station. The plaque reads: "Site of Shirdley Hill Railway Station on the Southport-Downholland Branch Line. Closed to passengers 1938 and to goods traffic 1952. Stationmaster Thomas Shaw."

Scarisbrick () is a village and civil parish in West Lancashire, England. The A570, the main road between Ormskirk and Southport, runs through Scarisbrick, and much of the village lies along it. As a result, it does not have a traditional village centre, though the junction with the A5147 is close to the geographic centre.
