John Webb's Mill, Thaxted

The Church of Saint John the Baptist with Our Lady and Saint Laurence is the parish church of the town of Thaxted in Essex, England. The present church was built over an extended period between c. 1380 and 1510 in the English Perpendicular style. Sitting on top of a hill with a slender spire reaching 181 feet (55 m) high, the church is one of the largest in the county, overlooking the town and the surrounding countryside. Its size is an indication of the former prosperity of the town, because of the medieval cutlery and wool trades that once flourished here. The church has earned the epithet "the Cathedral of Essex". The church is a Grade I Listed Building on the National Heritage List. Since 13 June 2017, the Benefice of Thaxted has been joined with that of the Sampfords, Radwinter and Hempstead. Since 1914, the church parish has formed part of the Diocese of Chelmsford, but previously it has been in the dioceses of London (foundation to 1846), Rochester (1846–77) and Saint Albans (1877–1914).

Thaxted is a town and civil parish in the Uttlesford district of north-west Essex, England. The town is in the valley of the River Chelmer, not far from its source in the nearby village of Debden, and is 97 metres (318 feet) above sea level (where the parish church stands).The town is 15 miles (24 km) north from the county town of Chelmsford and 5.5 miles (9 km) east from the M11 motorway. The parish contains the hamlets of Cutlers Green, Bardfield End Green, Sibleys Green, Monk Street and Richmond's Green. Much of its status as a "town" rests on its prominent late medieval guildhall, a place where guilds of skilled tradesmen regulated their trading practices, and its English Perpendicular parish church.

Cutlers Green is a hamlet in the civil parish of Thaxted, and the Uttlesford district of Essex, England. The hamlet is 1 mile (1.6 km) west from the town of Thaxted. The name of the hamlet is reminiscent of the cutlery industry which developed in Thaxted in the late Middle Ages. According to a Thaxted vicar, the remains of forges were found at Cutlers Green in the nineteenth century.The common land at the centre of the hamlet once belonged to the manor of Horham Hall, which lies one mile to the south. It was gifted by the lord of the manor and owner of the Hall, Mr. Sandy Shand, to Thaxted Parish Council in the 1978, which maintains it as a public common.There was a station on the Elsenham & Thaxted Light Railway named Cutlers Green Halt from 1913 until the line closed to passengers on 15 September 1952.A water tower at Cutlers Green was constructed in 1938 to supply the Thaxted area.Several buildings in Cutlers Green are Grade II listed, including Richmond's in the Wood farmhouse, which dates to the fourteenth century, several other farmhouses and cottages ranging from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries and a seventeenth century timber-framed and weatherboarded barn,There was once a public house - the Oak Beer House - which was tied to a brewery in Stansted Mountfichet and closed in 1925. There are currently no retail premises operating in the hamlet.

Monk Street is a hamlet in the civil parish of Thaxted, in the Uttlesford district of Essex, England. It is 1.5 miles (2.4 km) south of the town of Thaxted, on the main B184 road to Great Dunmow. The name of the hamlet is probably linked to the former Cistercian abbey in nearby Tilty.The composer Gustav Holst rented a thatched cottage in Monk Street from his friend Samuel Bensusan in 1915. It was whilst staying in this cottage that Holst worked on The Planets suite. In 1917 Holst moved to a house in Town Street, Thaxted. The cottage, which dated from 1614, burnt down in the early 1940s. The main A130 trunk road once passed through the centre of the hamlet, but it was bypassed by a road straightening and widening scheme in the 1960s.

Bardfield End Green is a hamlet in the Uttlesford district of Essex, England approximately one mile east of Thaxted. It is the home of Thaxted cricket club.

Richmond's Green or Richmonds Green is a hamlet in the civil parish of Thaxted, and the Uttlesford district of Essex, England. It is 1.5 miles (2 km) miles south-east from the town of Thaxted. The post town for Richmond's Green is Dunmow.

West Wood is a 23.6 hectares (58 acres) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Little Sampford, north of Thaxted in northwestern Essex. It is owned and managed by the Essex Wildlife Trust.The site is ancient woodland on chalky boulder clay and sandy loam. It was mainly elm, but this has died and the wood regenerated naturally with ash, and there is also some field maple and hornbeam. Bramble and dog's mercury dominate the ground layer, and there is a rich variety of plants in wetter areas, such as oxlip and meadow-sweet. There are many species of birds and butterflies, and four ponds which have great crested newts, dragonflies and damselflies.There is access by a footpath from the B1051 road between Thaxted and Great Sampford.

Cutlers Green Halt railway station was a station serving the hamlet of Cutlers Green, Essex. It was located 4 miles 52 chains (7.48 km) from Elsenham station. It closed in 1952.
