Wintrange Castle

Wintrange (Luxembourgish: Wëntreng, German: Wintringen) is a small town in the commune of Schengen, in southeastern Luxembourg. As of 2008, the town has a population of 402. In 2006, the Commune de Remerschen was renamed Commune de Schengen.

Schwebsange (Luxembourgish: Schwéidsbengen, German: Schwebsingen) is a small town in the commune of Schengen, in south-eastern Luxembourg. As of 2005, the town has a population of 277.

Remerschen (Luxembourgish: Rëmerschen) is a former commune and small wine-growing town in south-eastern Luxembourg, belonging to the commune of Schengen, near the point where the borders of Germany, France and Luxembourg come together. As of 2005, the town of Remerschen, which lies in the centre of the commune, has a population of 637. To use the name recognition of the town of Schengen, the council of the commune of Remerschen decided on 18 January 2006 to rename the commune to Schengen. The Chamber of Deputies voted on 13 July 2006 a law [1] allowing the change of name, which was published on 30 August 2006. The law took effect three days later, and the name of the commune of Remerschen was changed to Schengen as of 3 September 2006. The town is famous for its Club des Jeunes, which organises enormous parties, such as the carnival fiesta Musel am Dusel.

The Markusbierg tunnels are a pair of parallel tunnels, which form the most easterly section of the A13 motorway through Luxembourg, near the town of Schengen. The tunnels are 1575 metres in length, and descend easterly, towards the German border at a 5% gradient. The eastern end of the tunnel runs directly to a viaduct crossing the river Moselle, which forms the border with Germany. Construction work was initiated on 15 September 1997 and the tunnels opened to public traffic on 24 July 2003, along with the rest of the A13 motorway. Total construction costs were €65m, including €15m for the installation of added security systems. Each tunnel has regular emergency crossing points into the other, to allow escape in case of emergency. In addition to the normal lighting of the tunnels, and because of their gradient and curve, the road edges (including the kerb) are also fully illuminated, which helps to indicate the tight radius. Support staff are located near the German border.

Wellenstein (Luxembourgish: Wellesteen) is a small town in southeastern Luxembourg. It is part of the canton of Remich, which is part of the district of Grevenmacher. It used to be a commune with its administrative centre at Bech-Kleinmacher, until it was merged into Schengen (along with Burmerange) in 2011.As of 2005, the town of Wellenstein, had a population of 453. On 25 October 2005, members of the pan-European organisation Cultural Village of Europe offered a declaration on village life to the European Commissioner of Agriculture and Rural Development Mariann Fischer Boel in Wellenstein. This "Declaration of Wellenstein" lists qualities of life in small communities.

Bech-Kleinmacher (Luxembourgish: Bech-Maacher, pronounced [ˌbæɕˈmaːχɐ]) is a small village in the commune of Schengen, in south-eastern Luxembourg. As of 2005, the village has a population of 536. The village lies along the Moselle River, which forms the border with Germany. The area has been settled at least since Roman times as evidenced by the reconstructed funeral chamber that sits on a hilltop overlooking the river. Wine production is a major industry in Bech-Kleinmacher and the village is surrounded by vineyards. The village is also home to Musée "A Possen" a folklore museum located in a 17th-century house that explores pre-industrial life, wine making, barrel making and toys. The celebrated Luxembourg artist Nico Klopp was born in Bech-Kleinmacher on 18 September 1894. Olympian Marcel Chennaux was born here.

Schengen (Luxembourgish: [ˈʃæŋən] (listen)) is a small wine-making village and commune in far south-eastern Luxembourg, on the western bank of the river Moselle. The commune border includes the tripoint where the borders of Germany, France, and Luxembourg meet. After the mergers with Burmerange and Wellenstein in 2011, the commune has a population of 4,223 with an area of 31.42 square kilometres (12.13 sq mi). The largest settlement within the commune of Schengen is Remerschen after which the commune used to be named. The name of the commune was changed in 2006 to take advantage of the Schengen's name recognition after the signing of the Schengen Agreement there in 1985. Schengen Castle dates from 1390 but was almost completely rebuilt in the 19th century.

It used to be a commune until it was merged into Schengen (along with Wellenstein) in 2011.As of 2001, the village of Burmerange, which lies in the south-east of the commune, had a population of 173.

Perl (German pronunciation: [pɛʁl] (listen)) is a municipality in Merzig-Wadern, Saarland, Germany. In 2020 its population was 8,824.

Elvange (Luxembourgish: Elveng, German: Elvingen) is a small town in the commune of Schengen, in south-eastern Luxembourg. As of 2005, the town has a population of 644.

Nennig is a village in the Saarland, Germany, part of the municipality of Perl. It is situated on the river Moselle, opposite Remich, Luxembourg.
