Mayshill or Mays Hill is a hamlet located in the Parish of Westerleigh, South Gloucestershire, England. It is located just off the A432 (Badminton Road) between Coalpit Heath and Nibley. A small road runs from the hamlet to Frampton End Road, connecting Frampton Cotterell and Iron Acton. Yate and Westerleigh are also nearby. Despite its size the hamlet contains a pub, dating from the 16th Century. The 'New Inn at Mays Hill', on Badminton Road, there is also a house opposite the pub dating from the 17th Century. Brimsham Green School is a comprehensive secondary school in Yate, South Gloucestershire, England. Situated toward the northern edge of Yate and serving both the town and adjacent South Gloucestershire villages, Brimsham Green School has modern facilities grouped within a single site. It has a humanities block (B), design and technology block (D), art block (C), mathematics block (J), English block (E & L), music block, languages block (L), a study centre, sports hall, and reception (A), and they are all on one floor except for the humanities block which has a lift providing access to the first floor. In recent years the school has undergone a number of modernisations including the building of a new Design Technology block where the cricket cages had previously been and with wide-ranging extensions made to the English and Music departments. The Administration block has also seen the library move out into the English block. The school operates a sixth form provision which offers A Levels and BTECs as programmes of study for students. The sixth form is offered in conjunction with Chipping Sodbury School in Chipping Sodbury as well as Yate Academy in Yate under the title Cotswold Edge Consortium.The school was considering Academy status, but the governors and staff decided that the school and pupils would not benefit from transferring due to the extra expense incurred during the transfer.In a 2019 inspection the school was rated "Good" by Ofsted.Notable former students include television personality Josie Gibson.

Westerleigh Junction is a railway junction in Gloucestershire, England, where the Cross Country Route (XCR) from York to Bristol Temple Meads meets the South Wales Main Line (SWML) from London Paddington to Swansea, near the village of Westerleigh. The junction is located between the stations of Bristol Parkway, Swindon and Yate.

Iron Acton is a village, civil parish and former manor in South Gloucestershire, England. The village is about 2 miles (3 km) west of Yate and about 9 miles (14 km) northeast of the centre of Bristol. The B4058 road used to pass through the village but now by-passes it just to the north. The "iron" part of the toponym originates from the iron that used to be mined near the village. "Acton" is derived from the Old English for "farm (or village) with oak trees". Still today there is an oak wood in the village beside the River Frome. The civil parish also includes the smaller villages of Latteridge and Engine Common.

Ram Hill is a hamlet in South Gloucestershire, England. It is located between Coalpit Heath and Westerleigh and adjoins the hamlet of Henfield immediately to the south. In the Mudge Map 1815, Ram Hill was known as Nutridge Hill, and was linked to Westerleigh by Broad Lane and to Mays Hill by Frog Lane. Ram Hill is a small hamlet that has seen considerable land use change over the recent centuries moving from a traditional agricultural landscape to an active coal mining area by the beginning of the nineteenth century. The population would have increased at that time supported by the introduction of new miner's cottages by the Coalpit Heath Colliery Company. The closure of Ram Hill Colliery and Churchleaze Pits in the 1860s represented change but the new branch line to the Frog Lane Pit along with the movement of labour to the pit and the nearby Parkfield Colliery would have ensured that the industrial nature of the area was maintained to well into the twentieth century. In 1903 the new Great Western Railway direct route from Badminton to South Wales and the railway sidings at Coalpit Heath Railway Station would also have had an impact. The closure of the Frog Lane Pit at Coalpit Heath in 1949 represented a step change in the area and Ram Hill reverted to its agricultural roots, a dispersed linear settlement, adjoining the London to South Wales railway, surrounded by pastoral agricultural land. There were new additions at that time with further ribbon development consolidating the 1920s/30s "plotlands" developments along the convergent minor roads. Another addition was the introduction of a caravan site at Greenacres. Ram Hill was peaceful in the 1950s and early 1960s without extensive noise and light pollution. The construction of the M4 Motorway to the south of Henfield in the late 1960s began to change the character of the area and the increasing encroachment of night-time lights highlighted the continuing expansion of Bristol and Yate. In time Ram Hill has lost its rural tranquillity and adopted a new role as a commuter satellite to the main urban areas. At the same time the character of the landscape has changed with dairy farming being replaced by new uses in particular "horsiculture".

Rangeworthy is a semi-rural farming village in South Gloucestershire, England, nearby communities include Falfield and Charfield. The village population taken at the 2011 census was 675.The village lies between Iron Acton and Bagstone, along the B4058 road. It is a long village divided by a road with a well used village hall, pub, hotel, Indian restaurant, recreation ground, primary school and church. A village committee organises village events including the children's Christmas party, Summer Fete and Beer Festival. There are other organisations such as the Court Players, Women's Institute, a Youth Club, Toddlers group and Parish magazine. Several good public footpaths give access to the countryside & there are bridle paths for horse riders & cyclists.Rangeworthy was historically a chapelry in the ancient parish of Thornbury, a detached part of that parish. It became a separate civil parish in 1866. The organist Charles Harford Lloyd served there in his youth.

Yate is a town and civil parish in South Gloucestershire, England. It lies just to the southwest of the Cotswold Hills and is 12 miles (19 kilometres) northeast of Bristol city centre and 12 miles (19 kilometres) from the centre of Bath, with regular rail services to Bristol and Gloucester. Developing from a small village into a town from the 1950s onwards, the 2011 census listed Yate's parish population as 21,789. The market town of Chipping Sodbury (population 5,045) is contiguous with Yate to the east. In addition, a large southern section of the built-up area spills over into the parish of Dodington (population 8,206), and as a result, the total population of Yate's urban area is estimated at 35,000.

Iron Acton station opened on 2 September 1872, with the start of services on the Midland Railway branch from Yate to Thornbury. The station was designed by the Midland Railway company architect John Holloway Sanders.It closed to passenger services on 19 June 1944. The station served Iron Acton village and was sited to the south west of it. It consisted of a single platform face and a large wooden station building. A freight-only branch serving an iron mine in Frampton Cotterell connected at the station. This closed in 1872 and a truncated section of this route served as a coal depot until closure on 10 June 1963. The station was demolished in the 1960s. The part-remains of the platform survive, as does a crossing-keeper's cottage to the south of the station site. In mid 2013, the line beyond Yate Middle Jn was placed 'Out of Use', due to the mothballing of the quarry at Tytherington. However the line has since reopened with the resumption of quarry traffic.
