Graianrhyd, also spelt Graeanrhyd, is a small, scattered village in the community of Llanarmon-yn-Iâl, Denbighshire, Wales. It lies in hilly limestone country around 2 miles (3.2 km) to the east of Llanarmon-yn-Iâl village, and just to the south of Eryrys. The name is likely derived from the Welsh graean, "gravel", and rhyd, "ford"; there is still a ford across the River Terrig on a minor road east of the village. There are several limestone and silicate quarries in the immediate area, which is on the borders of the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty; the Clwydian Way footpath runs nearby. The area is predominantly agricultural with a landscape of woods and pastureland. There was no church in the village, though there was a nonconformist (Congregationalist) chapel, built in 1843 and rebuilt in 1859 in a simple vernacular style. In 1905 it was recorded as having a congregation of 192. The chapel is now closed. The former Graianrhyd primary school ceased to operate in 2002, after its intake for the year fell to only 3 pupils. The village has a pub, the Rose & Crown.

Llandegla Forest (Welsh: Coed Llandegla) is a forest of planted conifers covering 2.5 sq miles (6.5 km2) in Denbighshire, north-east Wales. It is situated to the south-east of the village of Llandegla at the north-western edge of Ruabon Moors. Only 20 miles from the city of Chester and 7 miles west of Wrexham, easily accessed via the A525 towards Ruthin.The forest is owned by UPM Tilhill and planting began in the early 1970s. The trees are mostly Sitka Spruce with a smaller area of larch. In the middle of the forest lies Pendinas Reservoir (Welsh: Llyn Pendinas). It was constructed in the late 19th century by Brymbo Water Company to provide water for the local area. It is currently managed by Dee Valley Water. The forest is used for a range of recreational activities including mountain-biking and walking. The Offa's Dyke Path, a long-distance footpath, passes through the forest. Fishing activity takes place at the reservoir. The forest and adjacent moorland are important habitats for the Black Grouse which is declining in many parts of England and Wales. The birds are increasing here due to a programme of special land management. A bird hide has been constructed overlooking the birds' lekking to allow visitors to watch them.

The Minera Limeworks were extensive lime quarries and kilns at Minera in Wrexham, Wales. It was located at grid reference SJ253520, near the villages of Gwynfryn, Minera, and Coedpoeth and was locally referred to as The Calch.

Treuddyn is a village, community and electoral ward in Flintshire, Wales, located just off the A5104 road, around 4 miles south-east of Mold and 3 miles north-west of Caergwrle. The community includes the nearby village of Coed Talon, to the east, and Rhydtalog, to the south-west on the Denbighshire border. There are two primary schools: Ysgol Terrig, which is a Welsh medium school and Ysgol Parc y Llan, which is an English medium school. The closest secondary schools are Ysgol Maes Garmon (Welsh) and Alun School (English) in Mold, 4.5 miles away. There is also a Post Office and shop. Treuddyn has its own church, St Mary's, and there are also two active chapels in the village. A third chapel, that of the Baptist denomination, has closed. There are many Bronze Age cairns in the area. It was an industrial area during the 19th and 20th centuries, with mining of coal, iron and lead. There was a distillery to extract oil from the coal, and a blast furnace between 1817 and 1865. In 1834 around 450 men were constantly employed in the collieries and other industries.Treuddyn is also an electoral ward, coterminous with the community. It elects one county councillor to Flintshire County Council.

Ogof Dydd Byraf is a cave which extends under Esclusham Mountain in the north-east Wales from its entrance in the south face of the Minera Limeworks quarry. It was originally discovered and explored in 1964 by the Wrexham Caving Club, before it was merged into the North Wales Caving Club.After a short series of mined passages there is a narrow 10 metre pitch into the main levels consisting of a series of well-decorated galleries. Some of the passages come very close to the cave Ogof Llyn Du whose access is blocked by a deep and difficult sump. Over the years this cave had been under threat by the quarry operations, but it is now protected as an SSSI. and owned by North Wales Wildlife Trust

Gwynfryn is a hill-top village in the community of Minera in Wrexham County Borough, Wales. Its name, originally that of the village chapel, is formed from the Welsh words bryn, "hill", and gwyn, "white": "white hill". At the time of the 2001 census, its population combined with that of the neighbouring, larger village of Bwlchgwyn was 1,148.Like the neighbouring villages of Minera and Bwlchgwyn, Gwynfryn is associated with the development of lead mines and limestone quarries in the vicinity. It is situated at the head of the Clywedog Valley in a hilly limestone area. The area was originally known as Plas-Gwyn ("white hall") Mountain, its name on the 1879 and 1900 Ordnance Surveys of Denbighshire, or as Pentre-Bais ("petticoat village"). According to a local story the latter name was changed to Gwynfryn by the disapproving village postmaster (or schoolmaster, in some versions).There was a Wesleyan Methodist chapel in Gwynfryn, which in 1905 had a congregation of 194. There was also a small Church in Wales chapel, St David's, which as of 2010 has been closed. The musician, composer and Eisteddfod adjudicator Thomas Carrington (1881–1961) was born in Gwynfryn.

Ogof Llyn Parc usually known as Pool Park is a cave on Esclusham Mountain above Wrexham, Wales, that has a 100 metres (330 ft) entrance shaft, normally descended by winch to the mine levels. Further caving and two ladders reaches the natural cave levels in which there are streamways.

North East Wales (Welsh: Gogledd-Ddwyrain Cymru) is an area or region of Wales, commonly defined as a grouping of the principal areas of Denbighshire, Flintshire, and Wrexham County Borough in the north-east of the country. These principal areas comprise most (excluding Colwyn, and parts of Glyndŵr) of the former administrative county of Clwyd. It is bordered by Conwy, and Gwynedd, in North West Wales to the west, Powys, in Mid Wales to the south, the English counties of Cheshire, and Shropshire to the east, and the Irish Sea, and Dee estuary to the north. It is the more urban, densely populated, and industrial part of the north Wales geographic region, centred on the city of Wrexham and the towns of Rhyl and Prestatyn, and the conurbation of Deeside. The region's close links with North West England in general and Merseyside in particular (together as the "Mersey-Dee" economic sub-region) are crucial to the region's economy. The Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is located in the region. Other attractions include historical buildings such as Chirk Castle, and Erddig in Wrexham, valley towns such as Corwen and Llangollen, and the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal World Heritage Site.The North East Wales Metro is a transport improvement project for the region. It is in concept, a multi-modal system with a combination of bus, heavy rail and light rail services linking major settlements and employment areas of the region, with hubs located in Wrexham, Chester and Deeside, in addition to further connections to Liverpool. The economic strategy for the region is for the further integration of North Wales, with Northern England, as part of the Northern Powerhouse project. The main roads in the area are the A55, A494, and A483. On 22 November 2023, Wrexham and Flintshire were announced to be part of a "North East Wales Investment Zone".

A national park has been proposed to replace the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley AONB in the north-east of Wales. Proposals for the then Clwydian Range AONB, established in 1985, to become a national park were first raised in 2010. In the 2021 Senedd election, Welsh Labour committed to establishing Wales' fourth national park in the north-east. Following Labour forming the next Welsh Government, the government commissioned Natural Resources Wales to develop proposals for the new national park. The national park is hoped to be established before the next Senedd election in 2026, with further consultations to take place in 2024 and 2025. In December 2023, Powys County Council rejected proposals for the national park to extend into Powys.

Nerquis Hall (Welsh: Neuadd Nercwys) is a 17th-century gentry house located in the North Wales village of Nercwys, Flintshire. Completed in the mid-1600s, the hall has survived in good condition and is currently a private residence. Nerquis Hall was designated a Grade I listed building in October 1952.

Bwlchgwyn (Welsh: Bwlch-gwyn) is a village in Wrexham County Borough, Wales, on the A525 road, 5 miles (8 km) west of the city of Wrexham and 10 miles (16 km) south-east of the town of Ruthin. Bwlchgwyn is part of the community of Brymbo. In the 2011 Census the population of the village was 855.

Eryrys (Welsh pronunciation: [ɛˈrərɪs]; alternate spelling Erryrys) is a village in Denbighshire, Wales, located at approximate grid reference SJ203578, five miles south of Mold. The village is built on the limestone formation of Bryn Alyn and many limestone outcrops can be seen close by. At 355m above sea level, Eryrys is one of a number of villages with a valid claim to be the highest in Wales; others include Bwlchgwyn, Wrexham (341m, but has a still-active church, which Eryrys does not), and Garn-yr-Erw, Torfaen (390m, but has no church or pub).A number of sources suggested that the name is derived from the Welsh Erw Yrys, or the "acre (erw) of Gyrys", sometimes linked with the "Hen Gyrys o Iâl" identified as the author of early Welsh collections of proverbs. There are several limestone quarries close to the village, some now closed but others still actively serving the local cement industry. Eryrys was formerly a lead-mining community, with the remains of several mines still visible nearby, although lead-mining in the area ceased in the late 19th century. The land around Eryrys is now primarily used for sheep-grazing, with also some dairy farming. Eryrys lies on the edge of the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and many walking routes go through or around the village.
