Rauenstein Castle

The Saidenbach Dam (German: Talsperre Saidenbach) is a dam in the German state of Saxony. Its reservoir supplies drinking water to Chemnitz and, in conjunction with the Central Ore Mountain Dam System (Talsperrensystem Mittleres Erzgebirge) and its other dams - Neunzehnhain I und II and Einsiedel - contributes to the supply of the region covered by the South Saxony Long Distance Water Association (Zweckverbandes Fernwasser Südsachsen). To a lesser extent the dam is also used to generate electricity and for flood protection. The actual dam is a curved gravity dam made of rubble stone and based on the Intze Principle. The dam was built from 1929 to 1933 in the vicinity of Lengefeld in the Ore Mountains and was taken into service in 1933. It is a "large dam" according to ICOLD criteria. The streams impounded are the Haselbach, Saidenbach, Lippersdorfer Bach and Hölzelbergbach. A public footpath runs along the dam crest. Bathing and leisure sports in the reservoir are not permitted, but the public may walk around the reservoir and it is also available for fishing. The Saidenbach Dam also has a pre-dam (Forchheim) and ten upper basins, of which four are usually filled.

Waldkirchen is a village and former municipality in the district of Erzgebirgskreis, in Saxony, Germany. Since 1 March 2009 it has been part of the municipality of Grünhainichen.Waldkirchen grew outwards in the direction of Grünhainichen from a church erected at the end of the village, from which the name of the village is derived ("forest church"), along an unnamed side valley of the river Zschopau. With the Reformation in 1539 Waldkirchen became an independent parish. The settlement of Zschopenthal (mentioned in church records for the first time in 1663) was established on the river Zschopau itself where, in 1687, a paintworks was built.

Krumhermersdorf is a village in the large county borough of Zschopau in the district Erzgebirgskreis in eastern Germany. It was first mentioned in the records in 1369.

Pilzhübel is a mountain in Saxony's Ore Mountains, southeastern Germany. Although its appearance is that of a broad hill without steep slopes, its geographical position allows for wide panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and peaks of the Ore Mountains including Fichtelberg and Klínovec in the south and Augustusburg Hunting Lodge in the north, as well as Bornwald forest.

Gehringswalde, a so-called Waldhufendorf, is situated about 1.5 km east of Wolkenstein in the Ore Mountains. It extends for about 1.5 km along the valley of a stream which joins the Zschopau river ca. 1.5 km west of Warmbad. The nearby Hüttengrundmühle (site of a former water mill) is also part of the village. The mountain Dreibrüderhöhe lies ca. 3 km east of Gehringswalde. Bundesstraße 101 forms the main road of the village, at whose western end it is joined by Bundesstraße 171. A county road connects Gehringswalde with Warmbad.

The hunting lodge of Augustusburg (German: Jagdschloss Augustusburg) was built from 1568 to 1572 above the town of the same name on a hill called the Schellenberg (516 m above sea level (NN)) on the northern edge of the Ore Mountains of Germany. The castle, which is visible from afar, is a local landmark. It lies about 12 kilometres east of the city of Chemnitz and about 21 kilometres southwest of Freiberg in the Free State of Saxony. In building a new castle, Prince Elector Augustus wanted not just to create a prestigious palace for his hunting trips, but also to underline his leading position in Central Germany. The immediate occasion for its construction was his victory in the Grumbach Brawl (Grumbachsche Händel). By enforcing the imperial ban on his Ernestine rivals – John Frederick the Middle and outlawed knight, Wilhelm von Grumbach, who sought refuge with John Frederick – the Albertine elector, Augustus, was able secure his supremacy over the Ernestines. He was also given the Ämter of Weida, Ziegenrück and Arnshaugk, which belonged to what later became the Neustädter Kreis (Neustadt District). Thanks to the thriving economy of the Electorate of Saxony under Moritz and Augustus, the necessary finance for the construction of the castle was available.
