MMRDA Mumbai Monorail is a monorail system in the city of Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, built as part of a major expansion of public transport in the city. The project is operated by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). In March 2023, the Mumbai monorail reported an increase in ridership after almost five years, which prompted the MMRDA to bet bigger on the project and order 10 new rakes to be deployed on the existing route.The monorail, as its name suggests, runs on a narrow, single track and, with its lightweight structure, is capable of navigating sharp turns and twists in congested urban areas. The Mumbai monorail is the first monorail in India since the Kundala Valley Railways and the Patiala State Monorail Trainways that were closed in the 1920s. The monorail route runs from Chembur in the city's eastern suburbs to Sant Ghadge Maharaj Chowk at Mahalaxmi in south Mumbai, thus effectively connecting the city's harbour line, central line and western line. The system started commercial operation after partially opening its Phase 1 to the public in 2014.
