Cool (Rotterdam)

The Lijnbaan is the main shopping street of Rotterdam. It was opened in 1953, as the main pedestrian street in the new shopping district, after the old shopping district was completely destroyed during the bombing of Rotterdam by the German Luftwaffe. It was designed by the firm Van den Broek & Bakema led by architects Jo van den Broek and Jacob B. Bakema. It was the first purpose-built pedestrian street in Europe.Flower beds, benches, statues, aviaries and protective wooden canopies were provided. In spite of the initial fears of shopkeepers, the car-free area proved successful. High-end shops thrived and it became a recreation destination, with visitors from all over the Netherlands.It is a complete car-free zone and has been a testcase for numerous car-free shopping streets around the world, such as the pedestrianized town center in Stevenage. However in the 1980s there was a decline as the original shopkeepers retired or left, replaced by large chains. It became a night-time no-go area with shop windows protected by roller shutters. But in the 2010s a revival began, with it becoming a meeting area for more youthful customers.There are plans to redevelop the street as part of bigger redevelopments of the shopping district. The Beurstraverse (by de Architekten Cie) is an example of these redevelopments.

Theatre Square (or in Dutch : Schouwburgplein) is a plaza situated in the heart of the city of Rotterdam, and is flanked by the municipal theatre, concert hall, restaurants, and cafes. An urban stage and an interactive open space, the 12.250 square meter square is designed by West 8, the landscape architecture firm founded by Adriaan Geuze. The design emphasizes the importance of a void, which opens a panorama towards the city skyline. It opened to the public in 1996.

Rotterdam Centrum (English: Rotterdam Center/ Center of Rotterdam) is a borough of Rotterdam. It was established on March 3, 2010. The center has 33,983 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017).Rotterdam Centrum is bounded by the emplacement of the Rotterdam Centraal railway station and the Goudsesingel in the North, the Tunneltraverse of the Henegouwerlaan and 's-Gravendijkwal in the West, the Nieuwe Maas River in the South and the Oostplein in the East.

The Westerkerk (Dutch pronunciation: [ʋɛstərkɛr(ə)k]; English: Western Church) was a Protestant church on the Kruiskade in Rotterdam, Netherlands completed in 1870 and destroyed in the bombing of Rotterdam in May 1940. The Westerkerk was designed by architect J.A. Jurriaanse in an eclectic mix of styles, the tower was neo-Gothic, front and side walls Neo-Romanesque and the interior referred to the seventeenth-century Protestant churches, like the New Church in Haarlem. The church was fully paid for by the Dutch Reformed Church itself. On December 28, 1867 procurement began. The building was eventually contracted to G. Key. On June 12, 1868 the first stone was laid and exactly two years later, First Pentecost 1870, the church was in use. The pastor during the service, Rev. W.Th. of Griethuysen, choose the text Matthew 21 verse 13: "It is written, My house shall be called a house of prayer." During the Bombing of Rotterdam in 1940 the church was damaged beyond repair. Replacing the Westerkerk and the Zuiderkerk in the Glashaven in 1960 was the Paulus Church in the Mauritsweg.

La Vilette is a restaurant located in Rotterdam, in the Netherlands. It was a fine dining restaurant that was awarded one Michelin star in 1985 and the periods 1987-1989 and 2003-2008.Gault Millau awarded the restaurant 13 out of 20 points.In 1993 and 2001, it was mentioned as brasserie, but later reverted to a fine dining restaurant.Fred Mustert was head chef from 1995 to 2007. Nicolas Belot, sous-chef under Mustert, took over that year. He retained the star for 2008, but then left unexpectedly. Then Marc Muzerie took over, but he couldn't retain the star.La Vilette was a member of the Alliance Gastronomique Néerlandaise from 2007 to 2009.

De Doelen is a concert venue and convention centre in Rotterdam, Netherlands. It was originally built in 1934 but then destroyed in 1940 during the German bombardment of Rotterdam in May 1940 at the outset of World War II. It was rebuilt in 1966, originally with one hall to which two more were added in the 1990s.It has a variety of facilities, including the Grote Zaal (Grand Hall), a 2,200-seat concert hall, two smaller halls which each seat about 700 people, and convention rooms. In 2015 it was classified as a Rijksmonument.Although mainly known as a venue for classical music, de Doelen is also a stage for jazz, world music and as the Central Boxoffice for the International Film Festival Rotterdam. It is also the home of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra.

Eendrachtsplein is an underground subway station in the center of Rotterdam. It is part of the Rotterdam Metro lines A, B, and C. The station is named after Eendracht Square (which is Eendrachtsplein in Dutch). It was opened on 10 May 1982. The station is located near several cultural hotspots, of which photos and location information are displayed on information panels on the station walls. Many party-goers head to this station, particularly on Friday and Saturday evenings, to dwell around famous cafés, bars and venues in neighboring Nieuwe Binnenweg, Oude Binnenweg and Westersingel. The station is between Dijkzigt and Beurs on the East-West Line (formerly Caland line), nowadays lines A, B, and C.

De Engel is a restaurant in Rotterdam, in the Netherlands. It is a fine dining restaurant that was awarded one Michelin star in 1997 and retained that rating until 2001. It held a Bib Gourmand at least in 2003.GaultMillau awarded the restaurant 13.0 out of 20 points.The head chef of De Engel is Lars Litz. During the Michelin period, it was Herman den Blijker. He still owns the restaurant.The restaurant is housed in a Dutch national monument, a mansion with stucco cornice and stucco decorations, built in the third quarter of the 19th century.

WORM is a Rotterdam based non-profit foundation and a multi-media alternative cultural centre focused on experimental, new media art, avant-garde and underground art, primarily music and movies. WORM is funded by the Triodos Bank and part of the culture nota 2009–2012 from the Dutch government. The foundation has received the Pendrecht Culture Prize and its venue is part of the Rotterdam culture plan. WORM organises festivals and concerts and movie nights, and runs an independent record label and a radio station. Part of the organisation is a media lab and a music studio, which run free artist in residence programmes for artists and experimental musicians. Experimental musician Lukas Simonis is the programmer of the artist in residence programme for the music studio. The studio has a collection of experimental musical instruments built by Yuri Landman. Artists that have been in residence at WORM include Tujiko Noriko, Toktek, Machinefabriek, Nancy Mauro-Flude, Jørgen Teller, One Man Nation, Blevin Blectum, Kevin Blechdom, Joe Howe, Eugene Chadbourne, Lucas Crane, Jim Xentos, Knull, Ben Butler and Mousepad, Colin Black, Harry Taylor (Action Beat), Stignoise, Hovatron, Martijn Comes, Danielle Lemaire and others. The foundation also has a shop with left field music, art house movies and books about subjects related to the cultural focus of the organisation and strong links to computer subculture hackerspace. The cooperative at moddr_ developed the Web 2.0 Suicide Machine and hotglue.me. Individual people involved designed and developed those projects. The organisation co-operates closely with International Film Festival Rotterdam, Poetry International, Incubate, State-X New Forms, Museumnacht. WORM was based at the Achterhaven until 2010. In 2011 it moved to the centre of Rotterdam and is currently located in the building formerly used as the Nederlands Fotomuseum (Dutch Photo Museum) at the Witte de Withstraat.

Cinerama is a cinema in central Rotterdam, the Netherlands. It started in 1960 and was rebuilt in the 1980s. It has seven screens and is owned by the Kinepolis group.The cinema screens both arthouse and mainstream films. It also hosts a variety of festival screenings such as Arab Cinema, IFFR and the Wildlife film festival.

Kunstinstituut Melly is a contemporary art gallery located in a former school building on Witte de Withstraat, in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The center was founded in 1990. It presents curated exhibitions, symposiums, live events, educational programs, and has a separate art literature publishing arm. On 7 September 2017, the Centre announced it would change its name over a number of years to separate it from the Dutch naval agent, Witte de With and to recognise the negative impacts of colonialism. From 27 June 2020 onwards, the Centre entered a period of "namelessness", removing all branding, forming renaming committees and engaging online surveys and roundtables to decide on a new name to come into effect on 27 January 2021. The new name Kunstinstituut Melly, was announced in October 2020, in reference to an art piece displayed on an outside wall of the building called Melly Shum Hates Her Job.

Coolsingel is one of the best known streets in central Rotterdam. It is located in the Cool district. The street leads from the Hofplein to the Churchillplein. Plans were announced in 2016 to reduce traffic congestion on the street. The redevelopment is expected to cost 47 million euros and to be finished by 2020. In 2021 the renovation was finished giving cyclists and pedestrians more space. Car traffic was reduced from 4 lanes (2 in each direction) to 2 lanes (1 in each direction).
