Hohegeiß

Dicke Tannen is a protected landscape, around 4.2 hectares (10 acres) in area, near the Harz village of Hohegeiß, which lies in the borough of Braunlage. It is host to what are widely considered to be the strongest spruce trees in North Germany; the individual trees reaching heights of 50 metres and trunk diameters of 100 to 180 centimetres. The landscape has been specially protected since 1989 as a natural monument. The trees, which are up to 350 years old and known colloquially as Rottannen ("Red Firs") were first mentioned in the 18th century in forestry documents. They owe their survival, firstly, to their location on the steep, wind-sheltered slopes of the narrow Wolfsbach valley; secondly, the fact that they were almost too difficult to fell with the axes and saws of the time on account of their huge size and the transportation of their timber would have proven almost impossible. As a result the area has not been used for forestry for over 200 years and thus gives the impression of almost being a virgin forest. Whilst around 1900, just under 120 trees were counted; around 1960 there were 85, in 1980, just 58, and currently there are only 23 healthy and 2 dead trees left. Apart from those reaching their natural age limit, changing environmental conditions may also have affected them. Dicke Tannen is No. 45 in the system of checkpoints forming the Harzer Wandernadel hiking network.

The Brunnenbach is a 12 km (7.5 mi) long, right-hand tributary of the Warme Bode, which flows to the west and south of Braunlage in Goslar district in the north German state of Lower Saxony.

The Sorge Border Museum (German: Grenzmuseum Sorge, 511 m above sea level (NN)) is an open-air museum that is open to the public and free of charge near Sorge in the Harz Mountains of central Germany. It is located immediately by the former Inner German Border, southeast of Braunlage and aims to recall the division of Germany into East and West Germany. In the border museum, elements of the original East German border may be seen, including a section of border fence, the dog runs, parts of the signal fence and the patrol road made of concrete slabs, a watchtower (a so-called B Tower) and an East German border post. Immediately on the state border between Saxony-Anhalt and Lower Saxony is the "Ring of Commemoration" (Ring der Erinnerungen), which was created by the environmental and landscape artist, Herman Prigann, in the 1990s. Made of dead wood, the artist has created a large ring based on the concept of a witches' circle. Many birds roost in the dead hedge so formed. The museum is run by the society of the same name (Grenzmuseum Sorge) and, since 2006, has been checkpoint no. 46 in the system of checkpoints of the Harzer Wandernadel hiking network.

Sorge is a village and a former municipality in the district of Harz, in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Since 1 January 2010, it is part of the town Oberharz am Brocken. Its population is 81 (2021). The name of the town means "Worry" in German.

Zorge is a village and a former municipality in the district of Göttingen, in Lower Saxony, Germany. Since 1 November 2016 it has been part of the municipality of Walkenried. The river Zorge rises in the village.

The Bremke is a 4.7-kilometre (2.9 mi) long headstream of the Warme Bode in Saxony-Anhalt and Lower Saxony, Germany. It rises at an elevation of 805 metres (2,641 ft) in the Harz Mountains between the Lower Saxon mountain of Wurmberg near Braunlage and the Kleiner Winterberg near Schierke in Saxony-Anhalt. For its entire length the stream forms the boundary between the two German federal states and until 1990 between East and West Germany. Even today the old East German convoy road has survived not far from the eastern bank of the stream.

The Allerbach is a tributary of the Warme Bode in the Harz Mountains of central Germany. It is just under 5 kilometres (3 mi) long. The source region of the "Little Allerbach" (Kleiner Allerbach) is in a boggy wood at a height of 560 m above sea level (NN) and lies about 100 metres (330 ft) north of the level crossing on the K 1353 county road (Kreisstraße) (Sorge – Elend section) with the railway line of the Trans-Harz Railway. The source region of the "Big Allerbach" (Großer Allerbach) is on the southwest hillside of the Rauher Jakob (560 m above NN); it lies at a height of 540 m above sea level (NN). The stream flows downhill in an easterly direction. Regarding its confluence immediately next to the L 98 Landesstraße (Tanne – Königshütte section), the Allerbach forms the historic boundary of the Amt of Elbingerode. Even today there are numerous boundary stones left and right of the stream banks.

Tanne is a village and a former municipality in the district of Harz, in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Since 1 January 2010, it is part of the town Oberharz am Brocken. Its population is 473 (2021).

The Rauher Jakob (literally "Rough James") is a hilltop between Tanne and Elend in the Harz mountains of central Germany. It is 568.6 metres above sea level. In the vicinity are the sources of the Spielbach and Allerbach, two tributary streams of the Warme Bode. The Ramsenhöhe is a sub-peak of the Rauher Jakob with a height of 565 metres AMSL.

The Jagdkopf a hill, 603.1 m above sea level (NN) high, in the Harz Mountains of Germany. It is located between the villages of Wieda and Zorge in the unincorporated area of Harz in the district of Göttingen in the state of Lower Saxony.

Hasselkopf is a mountain on the southern periphery of Braunlage, Germany. It is 612 m high. The hill is mostly covered in grass and undeveloped, but its northern slope has a short ski lift and can be used for downhill skiing in the winter months.On 7 May 1964, the hill was used by Gerhard Zucker to unsuccessfully attempt to demonstrate the use of mail rockets. One exploded in an accident, killing three.

Ellrich is a town in the district of Nordhausen, in Thuringia, Germany. It is situated on the southern edge of the Harz, 13 km northwest of Nordhausen. It is the northernmost settlement in Thuringia.
