Royal Air Force Great Sampford or more simply RAF Great Sampford is a former Royal Air Force satellite station located 1.7 miles (2.7 km) west of Great Sampford, Essex, England and 5.3 miles (8.5 km) south east of Saffron Walden, Essex.

Wimbish is a village and civil parish within Uttlesford, in Essex, England. The first recorded mention of the village was in 1042, when it was referred to as Winebisc. It was subsequently referred to as Wimbeis in the Domesday Book. The village has its own non-denominational primary school (Wimbish Primary School) and a church (All Saints). The church tower was partly destroyed by lightning in 1756, and was rebuilt in brick but was later taken down again in 1883.

Ashdon Meadows is a 1.5 hectare biological Site of Special Scientific Interest south of Ashdon in Essex.The site is unimproved grassland which is used for hay growing, with some areas calcareous and others neutral. It is the only known example of grassland on chalky boulder clay in north-west Essex. Flora includes salad burnet, downy oat-grass and fen bedstraw.There is access from the footpath between Water End and Plumtree Grove.

West Wood is a 23.6 hectares (58 acres) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Little Sampford, north of Thaxted in northwestern Essex. It is owned and managed by the Essex Wildlife Trust.The site is ancient woodland on chalky boulder clay and sandy loam. It was mainly elm, but this has died and the wood regenerated naturally with ash, and there is also some field maple and hornbeam. Bramble and dog's mercury dominate the ground layer, and there is a rich variety of plants in wetter areas, such as oxlip and meadow-sweet. There are many species of birds and butterflies, and four ponds which have great crested newts, dragonflies and damselflies.There is access by a footpath from the B1051 road between Thaxted and Great Sampford.

Hempstead is a village and civil parish in the Uttlesford district of Essex, England. The village is 7 miles (11 km) east from Saffron Walden and 6 miles (10 km) west from Haverhill. Hempstead is situated on the B1054 Saffron Walden to Steeple Bumpstead road. The nearest village is Great Sampford, 1.5 miles (2 km) to the south. The population of the parish at the 2011 census was 451.The village has one church, St. Andrew's, where William Harvey, who discovered the circulation of blood in the human body, and Sir Eliab Harvey, Captain of the Temeraire at the battle of Trafalgar, are interred. The notorious highwayman Dick Turpin, was born in the village public house, where his father was landlord. He was baptised in the village church. Hempstead has a pre-school located in the village hall and a play area on the Glebe which was installed in 2018.

Boyton End is a hamlet in the Uttlesford district of Essex, England. It is located approximately one mile north-east of Thaxted on the B1051 road.

Langley Wood is a 31.6 hectare biological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Cambridgeshire, but lying between Saffron Walden in Essex and Haverhill in Suffolk.This ancient wood has coppiced ash and hornbeam, together with maple, hazel and oak. Flora include dog’s mercury, sanicle and the uncommon sweet woodruff.The site is private land with no public access.

Shudy Camps is a village in the south-east corner of Cambridgeshire, England, near the border of Essex and Suffolk, and is part of the Chilford Hundred. In 2001, according to the census, the population was 310, increasing to 338 at the 2011 Census. The area of the village is 951 hectares (2,350 acres). It includes the nearby hamlet of Mill Green. The highest point in the parish is 383' ASL at Mill Green.

Bragg's Mill, William Bragg's Mill, Bartlow Hamlet Mill or Stevington End Mill is a grade II listed post mill at Ashdon, Essex, England which has been restored.

Ashdon, is a village and civil parish in Essex, England. It is about 4 miles (6 km) northeast of Saffron Walden and 23 miles (37 km) northwest from the county town of Chelmsford. The village is in the district of Uttlesford and the parliamentary constituency of Saffron Walden. The village has its own Parish Council.

Castle Camps was a Norman Castle located in what is now the civil parish of Castle Camps, Cambridgeshire.

RAF Castle Camps was listed as being in Cambridgeshire as it is close to its namesake Cambridgeshire village. It is very near the Suffolk border and the airfield straddled the Essex and Cambridgeshire county border. Construction of the station was started in September 1939. It opened as a satellite of RAF Debden in June 1940 and became a satellite of RAF North Weald in July 1943. During the Battle of Britain, one of the units operating from Castle Camps was 85 Squadron, whose Hawker Hurricanes were commanded by Peter Townsend. The airfield was used by numerous squadrons throughout the Second World War. In 1945, it was commanded by Battle of Britain ace Tim Vigors. It closed in January 1946.
