Chicago Lakeside Development was a proposed redevelopment of about 600 acres on the former U.S. Steel SouthWorks site on the South Side of Chicago, lying about 10 miles (16 km) south of the Chicago Loop. The plan calls for 13,575 new homes, 17,500,000 square feet (1,630,000 m2) of retail and other commercial space, a new high school, 1,500-slip marina, 125 acres of public land, lakefront access, new bike paths, and commuter rail and bus service would house 150,000 people. The Chicago Lakeside Development Master Plan will take an estimated 25 to 45 years to complete and will cost more than $4 billion in both public and private funds. The project was placed on indefinite hold in February 2016.

The Calumet River is a system of heavily industrialized rivers and canals in the region between the south side of Chicago, Illinois, and the city of Gary, Indiana. Historically, the Little Calumet River and the Grand Calumet River were one, the former flowing west from Indiana into Illinois, then turning back east to its mouth at Lake Michigan at Marquette Park in Gary. Now the system is part of the Chicago Area Waterway System and through the use of locks flows away from Lake Michigan to the Cal-Sag Channel.

The Port of Chicago consists of several major port facilities within the city of Chicago, Illinois, operated by the Illinois International Port District (formerly known as the Chicago Regional Port District). It is a multimodal facility featuring Senator Dan Dougherty Harbor (Lake Calumet), the Iroquois Landing Lakefront Terminus, and Harborside International Golf Center. The central element of the Port District, Calumet Harbor, is maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.The modern Port of Chicago links inland canal and river systems in the Midwestern United States to the Great Lakes, giving the global shipping market access to the St. Lawrence Seaway and linking the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico by way of the Illinois Waterway and the Mississippi River.

St. Michael (Polish: Kościół Świętego Michała) is a church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago. The current church is located at E. 83rd Street and S. South Shore Drive in South Chicago, a neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. It is a prime example of the so-called "Polish Cathedral style" of churches in both its opulence and grand scale. Along with Immaculate Conception, it is one of the two monumental Polish churches dominating over the South Chicago neighborhood.

87th Street station is a station on the South Chicago Branch of the Metra Electric Line on the southeast side of Chicago, United States. The station is located at 87th Street, two block East of Commercial Avenue, and is 12.51 miles (20.13 km) away from the northern terminus, Millennium Station. In Metra's zone-based fare system, 87th Street is in zone B. As of 2018, 87th Street is the 186th busiest of Metra's 236 non-downtown stations, with an average of 106 weekday boardings.Though Metra gives the address for the station as being at 87th Street east of Commercial Avenue, it is actually closer to South Baltimore Avenue. The tracks run along the east side of a one-lane alley behind South Baltimore Avenue, which spans only from 86th Street to 87th Street. West of this station is another Metra Electric station along 87th Street known as 87th Street (Woodruff) along the main line. Parking is available at this station, but only street-side along 87th Street, on the south side between Houston and Burley Avenues, and on the north side between the tracks and Baltimore Avenue.

South Chicago, formerly known as Ainsworth, is one of the 77 community areas of Chicago, Illinois. This chevron-shaped community is one of Chicago's 16 lakefront neighborhoods near the southern rim of Lake Michigan 10 miles south of downtown. A working-class neighborhood, it is bordered by East 79th Street on the north, South Chicago Avenue (the Chicago Skyway) on the southwest, a small stretch of East 95th Street on the south. With the Calumet River on the community's southeast side, South Chicago can be considered the gateway to the Calumet Region and the one of the four Chicago neighborhoods (East Side, Hegewisch and South Deering) that are considered by the locals as part of Chicago's Southeast Side. The Southeast Side is a description that the city itself continues to resist, including this neighborhood with all of Chicago's South Side communities.

The National Shrine of Saint Jude, in Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Chicago, Illinois, is a shrine to one of Jesus' 12 apostles and Roman Catholic saint Saint Jude. It is a place of pilgrimage for Catholics in the United States and other countries, and is part of a parish served by the Claretians, who continue to maintain the Shrine.

83rd Street station is an electrified commuter rail station along the South Chicago Branch of the Metra Electric Line on the South Side of the city of Chicago. The station is located on 83rd Street at Commercial Avenue near Russell Square Park, and is 11.97 miles (19.26 km) away from the northern terminus, Millennium Station. In Metra's zone-based fare system, 83rd Street is in zone B. As of 2018, 83rd Street is the 200th busiest of Metra's 236 non-downtown stations, with an average of 74 weekday boardings.West of this station is another Metra Electric station along 83rd Street known as 83rd Street (Avalon Park) along the Main Branch. Station-side and on-street parking are available next to the 83rd Street railroad crossing. South of the station, the line curves southeast onto another abandoned railroad right-of-way as it heads towards 93rd Street Station.

South Chicago (91st Street) was a commuter rail station on the Metra Electric District's South Chicago branch at East 91st Street and South Baltimore Avenue in Chicago's South Chicago neighborhood. The station provided service to the South Chicago, South Deering, Hegewisch, and East Side neighborhoods. In Metra's zone-based fare system, 91st Street was in zone B.In June 1991, the station was caught on fire after the victory of the Chicago Bulls in the 1991 NBA Finals led to a series of looting during the night.In 2001, Metra constructed a new terminal two blocks south at 93rd Street to replace this station. The new South Chicago station was dedicated June 4, 2001.

The Sawyer Water Purification Plant, formerly the South Water Purification Plant, is the first water filtration plant built in the City of Chicago. When completed in 1947, it was the largest such plant in the world.

The Church of the Immaculate Conception, referred to in Polish as Kościół Niepokalanego Poczęcia Najświętszej Maryi Panny, is a historic church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago located at 2944 East 88th Street in Chicago, Illinois. It is a prime example of the so-called 'Polish Cathedral style' of churches in both its opulence and grand scale. Along with St. Michael's, it is one of the two monumental Polish churches dominating the South Chicago skyline.

South Chicago (93rd Street) station is a Metra Electric Line station on East 93rd St and South Baltimore Avenue (9300 S, 3300 E) in Chicago's South Chicago neighborhood. The station provides transport services to Chicago's South Chicago, South Deering, and East Side neighborhoods. The station is located 13.0 miles (20.9 km) southeast of Millennium Station, the line's northern terminus at Randolph/South Water Street in downtown Chicago. As of 2018, South Chicago (93rd Street) is the 101st busiest of Metra's 236 non-downtown stations, with an average of 472 weekday boardings.The South Chicago Branch, a 4.7-mile (7.6 km) spur line, was built for the Illinois Central Railroad (IC). The IC operated the South Chicago Branch from startup in 1883 until the line was sold, with the rest of Metra Electric, to the public sector in 1987. The line was electrified in 1926. In 2001, Metra built the 93rd Street terminus as a replacement for the 91st Street (South Chicago) terminal.This station is the only outbound Metra terminus located within the corporate limits of the city of Chicago. It is 6 blocks south of the 87th Street Metra Electric South Chicago Branch station. Travel time to Van Buren/Jackson Street station in Downtown Chicago is about 35 minutes.A station typology adopted by the Chicago Plan Commission on October 16, 2014 assigns the South Chicago 93rd Street station a typology of Local Activity Center. A Local Activity Center is primarily characterized by the Metra station being the central focus of a built-up and identifiable neighborhood.
