Château d'Enghien (Belgium)

The Enghien Gardens (French: Parc d'Enghien / Dutch: Park van Edingen) are a domain of 182 hectares in Enghien or 'Edingen', Wallonia, Belgium, created by the dukes of Arenberg in the 17th and 18th century. The park is a green oasis of ponds, gardens and follies. Many considered the gardens a wonder of the world. Nothing remains of the Arenberg castle other than the chapel tower. Within the park, a new château was created in the 20th century. The Enghien municipality acquired the gardens in 1986, and opened them to the public.

Enghien ([ɑ̃ɡjɛ̃] ; Dutch: Edingen [ˈeːdɪŋə(n)] ; Picard: Inguî; West Flemish: Enge) is a city and municipality of Wallonia located in the province of Hainaut, Belgium. On 1 January 2006, Enghien had a total population of 11,980. The total area is 40.59 km2 (15.67 sq mi), which gives a population density of 295 inhabitants per km². The municipality consists of the following districts: Enghien, Marcq, and Petit-Enghien. It is situated on the Flemish border, and restricted language rights are granted to the Dutch speaking minority (so-called language facilities).

Herne (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɦɛrnə]; French: Hérinnes, pronounced [eʁin]) is a municipality in the province of Flemish Brabant, in Flanders, one of the three regions of Belgium. It is also situated in the region of the Pajottenland. The municipality comprises the towns of Herfelingen, Herne proper and Sint-Pieters-Kapelle. On January 1, 2006, Herne had a total population of 6,407. The total area is 44.63 km² which gives a population density of 144 inhabitants per km².

Steenkerque (French pronunciation: [stɛ̃kɛʁk]; Dutch: Steenkerke; in older English references also Steenkerke, Steenkirk, Steinkerque, Steinkerke or Steinkirk; Walloon: Stinkerke) is a village of Wallonia and a district of the municipality of Braine-le-Comte, located in Hainaut Province, Belgium, 50 kilometres (31 mi) south-west of Brussels and 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) south of Enghien. Steenkerque is notable for the Battle of Steenkerque in 1692 during the Nine Years' War, when France defeated a joint English-Scottish-Dutch-German army. The French movie The African Doctor (in French Bienvenue à Marly-Gomont) was shot in this village in 2015. The 2019 Tour de France began in Brussels and passed through Steenkerque, then home to "500 âmes, à peine!" ("500 souls, barely!").

The Battle of Steenkerque, also known as Steenkerke, Steenkirk, Steynkirk or Steinkirk was fought on 3 August 1692, during the Nine Years' War, near Steenkerque, then part of the Spanish Netherlands but now in modern Belgium. A French force under Marshal François-Henri de Montmorency, duc de Luxembourg, repulsed a surprise attack by an Allied army led by William of Orange. After several hours of heavy fighting, the Allies were forced to retreat, although a French counterattack proved fruitless.

Galmaarden (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɣɑlmaːrdə(n)] ; French: Gammerages, French pronunciation: [ɡamʁaʒ]) is a municipality located in the Belgian province of Flemish Brabant. The municipality comprises the towns of Galmaarden proper, Tollembeek and Vollezele. It is also situated in the Pajottenland. On January 1, 2006, Galmaarden had a total population of 8,058. The total area is 34.93 km2 which gives a population density of 231 inhabitants per km2. Galmaarden is the current home of the comedian Urbanus, who has a statue in Tollembeek. There is a statue of the stallion Brillant in Vollezele.

The pagus of Brabant (Latin: Pagus Bracbantensis, Dutch: Brabantgouw) was a geographical region in the early Middle Ages, located in what is now Belgium. It was the first region known to have been called Brabant, and it included the modern capital of Belgium, Brussels. Although it was divided between powerful neighbouring counties of Flanders, Hainaut and Louvain (Leuven) in the eleventh century, the eastern part which went to the Counts of Louvain, not only kept the name in use but became the primary name of their large lordship. This led to other regions later being named Brabant - in particular, the French and Dutch-speaking areas now called Brabant, east of the Dyle, including Leuven and Wavre; and secondly the province of North Brabant in the Netherlands. The area of the old pagus of Brabant is and was multi-lingual, divided between Dutch (Flemish) speakers in the north, and French (and Picard) speakers in the south. Today the region includes not only bi-lingual Brussels, but also parts of the modern Dutch-speaking Belgian provinces of Flemish Brabant and East Flanders, and the French-speaking provinces of Hainaut and Walloon Brabant.

Herfelingen is a village in the municipality of Herne in the Belgian province of Flemish Brabant. It was a municipality itself until the fusion of the municipalities in 1977.

Horrues (Walloon: Orû) is a village of Wallonia and a district of the municipality of Soignies, located in the province of Hainaut, Belgium. Since 1977, it has composed the municipality of Soignies along with the others villages Casteau, Chaussée-Notre-Dame-Louvignies, Naast, Neufvilles, Soignies (town), and Thieusies.

Rebecq (French pronunciation: [ʁəbɛk]; Walloon: Ribek) is a municipality of Wallonia located in the Belgian province of Walloon Brabant. On 1 January 2006 the municipality had 10,241 inhabitants. The total area is 39.08 km2, giving a population density of 262 inhabitants per km2. The municipality consists of the following districts: Bierghes, Rebecq-Rognon, and Quenast.

Bogaarden is a village in the municipality of Pepingen, in the Belgian province of Flemish Brabant. The name 'Bogaarden' means "orchards". Gertrude of Nivelles, daughter of Pippin I, was due to the inherit the property. But when she joined the Abbey of St. Gertrude, all her possessions were donated to the abbey.

Chaussée-Notre-Dame-Louvignies (Picard: El Caussêye) is a village of Wallonia and a district of the municipality of Soignies, located in the province of Hainaut, Belgium. With the other villages Casteau, Horrues, Naast, Neufvilles, Soignies (town), and Thieusies, it composes the municipality of Soignies since 1977.
