Welches Dam

Ouse Washes is a linear 2,513.6-hectare (6,211-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest stretching from near St Ives in Cambridgeshire to Downham Market in Norfolk. It is also a Ramsar internationally important wetland site, a Special Protection Area for birds, a Special Area of Conservation and a Nature Conservation Review site, Grade I. An area of 186 hectares (460 acres) between March and Ely is managed by the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire and another area near Chatteris is managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. The Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust manages another area near Welney. The site lies between the Old Bedford River in the north-west and the New Bedford River in the south-east. The Washes are a flood storage area and are often under water in the winter. It is internationally significant for wintering and breeding wildfowl and waders, especially teal, pintail, Eurasian wigeon, shoveler, pochard and Bewick's swans. The site also has rich aquatic fauna and flora, and areas of unimproved grassland.

Manea is a village and civil parish in the District of Fenland, Isle of Ely, Cambridgeshire, England. The population (including Welches Dam) of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 2,088.Landmarks are Manea railway station and RSPB Welches Dam nature reserve on the Ouse Washes.The village's brass band, the Manea Silver Band, was formed in 1882; it meets at Manea Royal British Legion. Manea men's football team compete in local leagues and cup competitions.

Wardy Hill is a hamlet in Coveney civil parish, part of East Cambridgeshire, England. It is also the site of a former Iron Age Hill fort

Pymoor is a village in Cambridgeshire in the vicinity of Ely and in the parish of Little Downham. There are approximately 390 residents according to the 2011 census, although that figure probably includes the nearby settlements of Oxlode and Hundred Foot Bank. It is sometimes referred to as Pymore or Pyemoor. In 1997, the earliest spelling on record was decided as the "official" spelling.The name Pymoor means "flies over bog" and the village sign shows a dragonfly settling on a bullrush in marshland. It is on the edge of the Ouse Washes at Welches Dam by the New Bedford River, and as a result geographically a close neighbour of Manea, but many miles away by road. The Pymoor Country and Agricultural show is an annual one day show. A Methodist chapel is the only place of worship. The area around the village was used for filming the 2007 film Atonement.

Ely Rural District was a rural district in England from 1894 to 1974. It was named after Ely, but did not include the city itself, instead covering the rural area to the west and north of it. It formed part of the administrative county of the Isle of Ely from 1894 to 1965, when this was merged into Cambridgeshire and Isle of Ely.

Coveney is a village northwest of Ely in Cambridgeshire. Coveney is on a small Fen 'island' rising to 43 feet (13 m) above sea level, some 3.5 miles (6 km) west from Ely city as the crow flies, but nearly twice that distance by the main road. The village is situated on a by-road which leaves the main Ely–Chatteris road at Wentworth crossroads, about 2 miles (3 km) south. This by-road, which has a branch to the hamlet of Wardy Hill, 1 mile (2 km) west of Coveney village, used to be the only metalled road into the parish. But the droves across Ely West Fen, by Frogs Abbey, to Downham Hythe, and from Wardy Hill to Witcham have recently been made up for wheeled traffic. The Church of England parish church of St Peter ad Vincula is a Grade I listed building.Several artefacts from the late Bronze Age have been found here, including bronze axes, shields and a few swords.

Manea railway station is on the Ely–Peterborough line in the east of England and serves the village of Manea, Cambridgeshire. It is 80 miles 18 chains (129.1 km) measured from London Liverpool Street (via Clapton and Ely), and is situated between Ely and March stations.

Witcham is a small village near Ely in Cambridgeshire, England. The village is surrounded by fenland farms and has a village hall and a 13th-century church dedicated to St Martin. It has a pub called the White Horse, which was the winner of the Ely and District CAMRA Rural Pub of the Year Award 2006, 2010, 2011 and Overall Pub of the Year Award 2011. It also has a fine village green. The village hosts the World Pea Shooting Championships on the second Saturday in July every year and has staged the competition annually since 1971. Witcham is built around a cross-roads in the centre of the village with each of the four roads having housing on each side for 50-200m. The north-bound street is called "Martins Lane", the east-bound street is "High Street", south-bound is "The Slade", and west-bound is "Silver Street", which leads to the more recent housing developments of "Westway Place" and "The Orchards". The name of the village derives from "Wycham", meaning "place of the wych elms", after the trees that used to grow there in significant numbers. A Roman cavalry helmet dating from the first century AD, known as the Witcham Gravel helmet, was found in the village gravel pit, and now resides in the British Museum. The village school was sited on the South side of High Street, opposite and a little East of St.Martin's church, and was open as an infants and junior school from 1873 until 1982. When the school closed the pupils instead went to Mepal or Sutton. A local archive has further images of the school.

Elean power station is a straw-fired biomass power station in Cambridgeshire, England. At a capacity of 38 MW, it was the largest straw-fired power plant in the world at the time of its completion. The power station was constructed between 1998 and 2000 by FLS Miljo and is operated by EPR Ely Ltd. It generates 270 GWh of electricity from 200,000 tonnes of biomass annually, supplied by Anglian Straw Ltd. Straw is the major fuel of the plant, but oilseed rape and the energy crop Miscanthus are also used, as well as some natural gas.The vibrating grate boiler generates steam at 92 bar and 540°C which is used to drive a turbo-alternator.In 2011, the company owning the plant were fined £120,000 after an accident during the unloading of a straw bale led to the death of a delivery driver. Later the same year Elean was affected by an arson attack on stacks of straw that were destined to be used at the plant.

Mepal is a village in Cambridgeshire, England. Mepal is part of the East Cambridgeshire district, and is located just north of the A142 road between Ely and Chatteris.

Wentworth is a small village near Ely in Cambridgeshire, England. It is in the Isle of Ely, adjacent to Grunty Fen, Wentworth lies south of the A142 between Witchford and Sutton, approximately 5 miles west of Ely. The village is centred on St Peter’s Church and a number of listed buildings at the junction of Main Street and Church Road. Residents travel to nearby settlements, including Ely for many goods and services. In 2015, there was no public transport serving the village. However, as of 2017, there is a limited bus service and the nearest railway station serving the village is Ely. In the 1870s, Wentworth, Cambridgeshire was described as: " a parish in Ely district, Cambridge; 4½ miles W by S of Ely r. station. Post town, Ely. Acres, 1,437. Real property, £2,653. Pop., 180. Houses, 40. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Ely. Value, £450.* Patrons, the Dean and Chapter of Ely. The church is partly Norman, chiefly early English, and all good."It is thought the name 'Wentworth' is:"English: habitational name from places in Cambridgeshire and South Yorkshire called 'Wentworth', probably from the Old English byname Wintra meaning 'winter' + Old English worð 'enclosure'. It is, however, also possible that the name referred to a settlement inhabited only in winter."The Domesday entry for Wentworth suggests that the village was then a fairly large one. Later, however, it declined in size.
