Shilton, Warwickshire

Shilton railway station was a railway station serving Shilton in the English county of Warwickshire, on the Trent Valley Line of the LNWR.It was situated where Church Road crosses the line. The booking office was built on the bridge, with steps down to the two island platforms. Initially there were two running lines when the station opened in 1847. A third up line was added between Bulkington and Rugby in 1871, for which an extra arch was built for the bridge. This became a passenger line in 1876 utilising the opposite side of the up platform, and a further line provided sidings for 22 wagons. On the down side was a refuge siding from under the bridge, which later became the down goods and also became a loop from the main line. However although it ran next to the platform, it was fenced off. The station buildings were constructed to designs by the architect John William Livock with a booking office built with brick for the front and side walls. The rest of it was timber which, over the years, became more and more dilapidated. The covered steps to the platforms were of corrugated iron. So it was not a pretty station and platform facilities were minimal, little more than a small waiting shelter on the down platform. At grouping in 1923 it became part of the London Midland and Scottish Railway. It closed in 1957

Ansty Hall is a 17th-century country house, located in the village of Ansty, and near Coventry and Rugby, Warwickshire, which is now a four star hotel operated by Macdonald Hotels Ltd. It is a Grade II* listed building surrounded by 8 acres of landscaped gardens.The Manor of Ansty was owned by the Stanhope family from 1406. It was sold in 1506 to the Earl of Shrewsbury who donated it to the Dean of St George's, Windsor. It was let out on lease until 1659 when it was purchased by Richard Tayler. The old manor was replaced by Edward Tayler in 1678 with a seven-bayed, two-storey mansion. On the death of a later Edward Tayler in 1799, the property passed to his nephew Simon Adams, a barrister and Recorder of Daventry. In 1800 Adams remodeled the house adding a third storey to the main block, with a pediment over the central three bays, and two one-bayed wings, so creating a Carolean style entrance front. Later extensions were added to the south east in the mid- and late 19th century. Henry Cadwallader Adams (1779-1842) was Mayor of Coventry in 1836 and High Sheriff of Warwickshire in 1837. His nephew and namesake Henry Cadwallader Adams (1817-1899) was a children's writer. Descendants of the Adams family remained in residence until 1965. More recently the property has been restored and converted for use as a hotel.

Ansty is a village and civil parish in the Rugby Borough of Warwickshire, England, about 5 miles (8 km) northeast of Coventry city centre and 7 miles (13 km) south of Hinckley. Ansty was part of the County of the City of Coventry until that county was dissolved in 1842. Ansty is on the B4065, which used to be the main road between Coventry and Hinckley. The junction between the M6 and M69 motorways and A46 road is 1 mile (1.6 km) southwest of the village. The northern section of the Oxford Canal, once a major coal-carrying network and now a popular leisure resource, passes through the village. Ansty has been cited as "the most boater-hostile village on the canals" because of the huge number of "no mooring" signs.

Bramcote is a village in the Rugby district of Warwickshire in England. It lies approximately 3.3 miles (5.3 km) south-east of Nuneaton, between the Ashby Canal and the River Anker. Historically, Bramcote was a dispersed settlement rather than a nucleated village. Today, its main population centre is Gamecock Barracks, which lies to the south of the B4114 road and west of the M69 motorway. In 2001, Bramcote's population was 321, which included the hamlet of Bramcote Mains a quarter of a mile to the south, and 214 armed-services personnel at Gamecock Barracks. Population details for the 2011 census can be found under Wolvey. Bramcote Waters golf course lies to the east and Bramcote NHS Hospital to the north. Prior to the barracks at Bramcote being occupied by the Army, it was Royal Naval Air Station Bramcote HMS Gamecock. During the Second World War, it was an RAF station called RAF Bramcote.

Royal Air Force Ansty or RAF Ansty is a former Royal Air Force station located 5 miles (8 km) east of Coventry city centre, Warwickshire, England, 7 miles (11 km) north-west of Rugby, Warwickshire. The airfield was opened in 1936 and after training many pupils closed in 1953.

Barnacle is a hamlet in the county of Warwickshire, England, in the civil parish of Shilton and Barnacle. Historically it was divided between the parishes of Shilton and Bulkington.Barnacle was recorded in the Domesday Book as Bernhangre. The Knights Hospitallers held an estate in Barnacle in the 13th century. The hamlet contains Barnacle Hall which dates from 1745, it was built on the site of an earlier hall which had been owned by William Hickman, who was a captain in the Cavalier army of King Charles I during the English Civil War. Because of this it was plundered and burnt down by the Roundheads.The hamlet contains some 18th century cottages, and the "Red Lion Inn". It also contains a small Methodist chapel, dating from 1844.

Bulkington is a large village and former civil parish near Bedworth, in the Nuneaton and Bedworth district of Warwickshire, England. In the 2011 census the ward had a population of 6,146 decreasing slightly to 6,080 at the 2021 census. It is located around 6 miles (10 km) northeast of Coventry, just south of the town of Nuneaton, east of Bedworth and 5 miles (8 km) southwest of Hinckley. Despite historically having stronger links with Bedworth, Bulkington forms part of the Nuneaton Urban Area. Bulkington was mentioned in the Domesday Book as Bochintone, meaning "estate associated with a man called Bulca".The parish originally contained seven hamlets, two of which were subsumed by Bulkington village following residential building expansion which began in the 1930s.Historically the main industry in Bulkington was ribbon weaving. Today Bulkington is largely a commuter village for larger nearby urban centres such as Coventry, Nuneaton, Bedworth, Hinckley and Leicester. Bulkington has connections with the locally born author George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans), who knew the village well. She is thought to have referred to it as Raveloe in her book Silas Marner (1861). The church of St James is where George Eliot's uncle and aunt are buried.

Gamecock Barracks is a British Army installation located at Bramcote, 3.5 miles (5.6 km) south-east of Nuneaton in Warwickshire.

Royal Air Force Bramcote, or more simply RAF Bramcote, is a former Royal Air Force station located 3.5 miles (5.6 km) south-east of Nuneaton, Warwickshire, England used during the Second World War. It was later transferred to the Admiralty and was known as Royal Naval Air Station Bramcote, (RNAS Bramcote), and when commissioned became HMS Gamecock. When it subsequently transferred to the British Army from the Admiralty, it was called Gamecock Barracks.

Combe Fields is a civil parish in the Rugby district, in the county of Warwickshire, England. The parish has no village, but contains Coombe Abbey, after which it is named, and a few isolated houses. In the 2001 census the parish had a population of 114 increasing to 126 at the 2011 census.The parish also contains Ansty Park, a business park where Cadent Gas and the London Electric Vehicle Company have their headquarters. At the time of the Domesday Book the parish was called Smite, which contained two settlements of Upper and Lower Smite; these were both deserted in the 12th or 13th century when Monks from Coombe Abbey enclosed them to create sheep pastures. The old parish name is retained in Smite Brook, Smeeton Lane and Smite Hill. The remains of the medieval church of St Peter of Lower Smite was converted into a house called Peter Hall in the 16th century.

Bulkington was a railway station on the Trent Valley Line serving the village of Bulkington, Warwickshire, England. The station was opened along with the line in 1847, and was closed in 1931.The station had three platforms; one side platform, and an island platform.The platforms are long gone, the only surviving remnant of the station today is the former station building alongside the tracks, which is now a private house.The station building was designed by John William Livock, who designed most of the stations on the Trent Valley Railway. It is one of the few remaining examples of original Livock designed station buildings on the Trent Valley Line. Two others still exist at Atherstone and Colwich.

Withybrook is a rural village and civil parish in the English county of Warwickshire. Its population was 255 at the 2021 census, increased slightly from 242 at the 2011 census.The village is located in a valley of a small brook, which is a tributary of the River Sowe. It sits just west of the old Fosse Way, about halfway between Nuneaton and Rugby on the B4112 road, and about 7 miles (11 km) north-east of Coventry. Administratively it forms part of the borough of Rugby. The grade II* listed, village church of All Saints, dates from the 14th century. It was extensively restored in 1995. There is a pub in the village called The Pheasant. The village hall has a varied programme of social events throughout the year.About one mile west of the village, is the deserted medieval village of Hopsford.The village came to the attention of the national news in August 2005, when a local farmer Michael Boffey was killed by car thieves who were trying to steal his Land Rover. Two men from Leicester were later convicted of his manslaughter.
