Battle of Congaree Creek

WFMV (620 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station licensed to Cayce, South Carolina, and serving the Columbia metropolitan area. It is owned by Glory Communications and broadcasts an urban gospel radio format. By day, WFMV is powered at 2,500 watts. But to avoid interfering with other stations on 620 AM, it reduces power at night to only 126 watts. It uses a non-directional antenna at all times. Programming is also heard on two FM translator stations, 96.1 W241DJ and 107.1 W296EI.

WQXL (1470 AM "The Point 100.7 FM and 1470 AM") is a commercial radio station in Columbia, South Carolina. The station is owned by Glory Communications and operated by Capital City Media. It airs a talk radio format. Local hosts are heard in morning and afternoon drive times, with nationally syndicated talk shows heard middays, evenings and late nights. They include Dave Ramsey, Dennis Prager, Todd Schnitt, Ben Shapiro, Brian Kilmeade and Red Eye Radio. Most hours begin with Salem Radio news. Operator Keven Cohen hosts both the 7 AM and 4 PM radio shows, with a local host at 9 AM, and Phil Kornblut, whose long-running statewide sports radio program has been show has been owned and operated by WQXL since January 29, 2019 after its previous syndicator shut down in-state operations, is on at 6 PM. The transmitter, located off New State Road in Cayce, is powered at 11,000 watts during the day and 100 watts at night. Programming is simulcast on FM translator W264DF 100.7 MHz in the Columbia area.

Granby was the first European settlement in the area of present-day Columbia in the U.S. state of South Carolina. Settlement began around 1718 with the establishment of a trading post by the British on the Congaree River. Many small farms were settled by German, Swiss, and Scots-Irish immigrants. Granby was the largest town and county seat of Lexington County until the early 19th century, when the town began to gradually decline as Columbia, the state capital, grew. The once thriving colonial town was mostly unoccupied after the first quarter of the 19th century. Today, the area is part of present-day Cayce.

Olympia is an urban unincorporated area and census-designated place (CDP) in Richland County, South Carolina, United States. It was first listed as a CDP prior to the 2020 census with a population of 1,087.The CDP is in western Richland County, bordered to the north by the city of Columbia, the state capital, and to the west, across the Congaree River, by the city of Cayce. The eastern half of the CDP is residential, while the western half is occupied by the Columbia Quarry of Vulcan Materials.Four locations in the CDP are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Olympia Armory is on Granby Lane in the northeast part of the CDP, the Olympia Mill School is on Olympia Avenue in the northern part of the CDP, and the Olympia Union Hall is on Silver Street in the northernmost part of the CDP, close to the Columbia city line. Much of the northeast part of the CDP is within the Olympia Mill Village Historic District. The Olympia Mill is within the Columbia city limits, just north of the CDP.

Congaree Creek is a stream in Lexington County, South Carolina, formed from the Congaree River. The Name 'Congaree' come's from the River, of the same name. The Battle of Congaree Creek was named after this creek. William J. Cayce House is a historic house located at 517 Holland Avenue in Cayce, Lexington County, South Carolina.

Olympia Mill, also known as Pacific Mill, is a historic textile mill complex located at Columbia, South Carolina. It was built in 1899, and consists of a four-story, red brick, rectangular shaped, main mill building connected to a one and two-story red brick power plant. The main building is in the Romanesque Revival style and features terra cotta detailing, large segmental arched window openings, and twin pyramidal roofed towers. The complex also includes: a one-story brick power plant auxiliary building, a one-story storage building, and two small brick one-story gatehouses.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.

Granby Mill Village Historic District is a national historic district located at Columbia, South Carolina. The district encompasses 97 contributing buildings associated with a cotton mill and associated mill village. The mill was initially constructed in 1896–1897, and is a large four-story, rectangular brick building in the Romanesque Revival style. It features two projecting five-story entrance towers. The Granby Mill Village includes a number of "saltbox" style dwellings reminiscent of a New England mill village. The district also includes the mill gatehouse, the two-story mill office building (c. 1902), commercial buildings, the Gothic Revival style Whaley Street Methodist Church, and operatives' houses.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.

Williams–Brice Stadium is the home football stadium for the South Carolina Gamecocks, the college football team representing the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina. It is currently the 16th largest on-campus college football stadium in the NCAA and is located on the corner of George Rogers Boulevard and Bluff Road adjacent to the South Carolina State Fairgrounds. Carolina football teams consistently attract standing-room-only crowds to Williams–Brice Stadium. The atmosphere on game days has been voted "the best" by SECsports.com, and has been noted as being among the loudest environments to play in by opposing players. The stadium has been the site of many concerts, state high school football championships, and various other events. It hosted the annual Palmetto Capital City Classic between Benedict College and South Carolina State University until the last game in 2005. The stadium is sometimes called "The Cockpit" by Gamecock fans and local media, and the name has been commonly used by these groups since at least the early 1970s when the university held a fund-raising campaign to raise money for an AstroTurf playing surface, called "Carpet the Cockpit".

The South Carolina State Fair is an annual 12-day state fair held in Columbia, South Carolina and operated by the State Agricultural and Mechanical Society of South Carolina. North American Midway Entertainment caters rides, food, and games for the fair. The fair is South Carolina's largest recurring event, attracting over 400,000 fairgoers annually.

Capital City Stadium is a stadium in Columbia, South Carolina, United States. Originally built in 1927, it is primarily used for baseball and was the home for more than 20 years of the Capital City Bombers. It is situated in the Olympia section, near the old Olympia Mill. While playing at "The Cap" the Bombers enjoyed a rich history of success with numerous South Atlantic League Championships, including the memorable years of 1986, 1991, and 1998. The stadium was rebuilt in 1991, but in 2005 lost its main tenant, the Bombers. The Coastal Plain League's Columbia Blowfish used the stadium from 2006 until their new stadium was opened in 2015. It had also been used for college baseball by the NCAA Division II Benedict College Tigers, but they left around the same time. Hank Aaron played his last game as a minor league player at Capital City Stadium in 1953 before moving up to the Milwaukee Braves.In 1995, Capital City Stadium hosted a concert by Hootie & the Blowfish (with Greenville's Edwin McCain, Clemson's Cravin' Melon, and Cowboy Mouth). In 1999, there was the Rock 93.5 Fallout concert there with UK's Bush, Sponge, and Train. On February 4, 2019, City of Columbia officials announced that the stadium would be torn down "within the next two months" though it remained standing as of June 2019 and the demolition was still in the future as of September 2019. The "closing day event" was finally announced in March 2020 for April 4, with demolition to follow. The event was then postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and had not been rescheduled as of August 2020. In October 2020, the Columbia City Council extended the deadline for developers to purchase the property until May 1, 2021, with demolition to follow.The site developer plans to build a mixed-use development of retail and residential and restore Rocky Branch Creek, which runs through the site.
