Great Waltham — also known as Church End — is a village and civil parish in the Chelmsford district, in the county of Essex.The parish contains the village of Ford End, and the hamlets of Broad's Green, Howe Street, Littley Green, North End and Fanner's Green, and the hamlet of Breeds, part of Great Waltham village. Walthambury Brook, a tributary of the River Chelmer, flows west to east through the parish and at the north of the village. It is twinned with the French town of Ceyrat.

Breeds is a hamlet in the Great Waltham civil parish of the Chelmsford district of Essex, England. It is situated on South Street of the village of Great Waltham, to which it is conjoined, and of which it is part. The county town of Chelmsford is approximately 2 miles (3 km) to the south.

Broads Green is a hamlet in the civil parish of Great Waltham and the Chelmsford district, of Essex, England. Nearby settlements include the town of Chelmsford and the villages of Great Waltham and Little Waltham. For transport there is the B1008 road, the A131 road and the A130 road nearby. Broad's Green public house is The Walnut Tree.

Howe Street is a rural hamlet on the banks of the River Chelmer. It is situated in the parish of Great Waltham, in the Chelmsford district, in the county of Essex, England. It is 6 miles north of the City centre. It has a population of around 200, the village post office and shop closed in 2008 and closest nearby shop and schools are located in Great Waltham 1.3 miles away. Howe Street has a Historic Grade II listed 14th-century Freehouse pub (one of the oldest in Essex) known as The Green Man, which opened 7 November 2016 to the public, after major refurbishment costing £3 million and investment being part of a new venture for renowned Essex born Michelin star chef brothers Chris and Geoff Galvin. It is one of several listed historic buildings in the hamlet many of which are well preserved examples of Early East Anglia Timber Frame construction. There is also some light industry including an active working farm known as Fitzandrews (part of the Langleys Estate) and several commercial units located at Warners Farm providing local employment. Howe Street is also known as the birthplace of Milbank Floors established by Geoffrey Milbank in 1947 however no longer based in the village they were located on the site now known as Bridge Croft - a 1980s built housing development.

Chelmer Valley High School (CVHS) is an academy based on a large site on the outskirts of Chelmsford, Essex, England. It has specialisms in engineering, and is assessed as one of the best performing comprehensive schools in Essex; it was given an "outstanding" rating by Ofsted in 2007, and as "good" in 2013. The school also received an Ofsted rating of "good" in 2017. The school has a number of blocks (Old, New, Tech, Richardson, Eastman and Sixth Form) providing many classrooms, offices and study spaces for students and staff.

Little Waltham Meadows is an 8.9-hectare (22-acre) nature reserve south of Little Waltham in Essex. It is owned and managed by the Essex Wildlife Trust.The site is wet and dry meadows on the bank of the River Chelmer, which are grazed to restore them to their previous state. There are grassland plants such as saxifrage, bee orchids and yellow oat-grass. Tawny owls and sparrowhawks hunt in the meadows and ancient hedgerows.There is access from Back Lane.

Little Waltham is a village and civil parish just north of Chelmsford, in Essex, England. It is adjacent to the village of Great Waltham. The Domesday Book refers to the two villages as Waltham, consisting of several manors. The site of an Iron Age village was excavated before upgrading the main road north between the current villages. The village straddles the River Chelmer. Its main street has a number of old houses near the bridge, notably a rare Essex example of a Wealden hall house, now divided into three cottages. A footpath leads south alongside the river to an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, part of which is a nature reserve. The countryside is under continued threat from housing and road development.

Chelmsford Rural District was a local government district in Essex, England from 1894 to 1974. It surrounded, but did not include, the town of Chelmsford; which formed a municipal borough. It was formed as a rural district in 1894, based on the Chelmsford rural sanitary district. It included the parishes of: Boreham Broomfield Buttsbury Chignal St James Danbury East Hanningfield Good Easter Great Baddow Great Leighs Great Waltham Highwood Ingatestone and Fryerning Little Baddow Little Leighs Little Waltham Margaretting Mashbury Pleshey Rettendon Roxwell Runwell Sandon South Hanningfield Springfield Stock West Hanningfield Widford Woodham Ferrers WrittleDuring 1934 there were some changes to the district boundary. The municipal borough of Chelmsford expanded and gained 1,659 acres (7 km2) from the rural district, including parts of the parishes of Broomfield, Springfield, Widford, and Writtle. At the same time 1,282 acres (5 km2) were transferred from Buttsbury parish to form part of Billericay Urban District. Later that year, an area of 6,128 acres (25 km2), made up of Mountnessing and parts of the parishes of Downham, Ramsden Bellhouse, Ramsden Crays and Shenfield, was gained from the abolished Billericay Rural District. Also at this time 274 acres (1 km2) was gained from the parish of Hockley in Rochford Rural District. The district was abolished in 1974 and its former area was merged with the municipal borough of Chelmsford to form the current non-metropolitan district of Chelmsford, which inherited the borough charter. The parishes of Ingatestone and Fryerning and Mountnessing became part of the district of Brentwood. The former council offices in New London Road are now used as a Jobcentre Plus.

Broomfield is a village and residential suburb in the City of Chelmsford district, immediately north of the city itself. It is the site of a major Accident & Emergency hospital. There are two public houses as well as primary and secondary schools and sports clubs. The village was struck by an F1/T2 tornado on 23 November 1981, as part of the record-breaking nationwide tornado outbreak on that day.

Fanner's Green is a hamlet and cul-de-sac road in the Great Waltham civil parish of the Chelmsford district of Essex, England. It is situated 1 mile (1.6 km) south-west from the village of Great Waltham. The county town of Chelmsford is approximately 2 miles (3 km) to the south-east. Fanner's Green comprises Fanner's farm, and a barn 200 yards (183 m) south on Breed's Road.

Newland Grove is a 3.2-hectare (7.9-acre) nature reserve north of Chelmsford in Essex. It is managed by the Essex Wildlife Trust.The site is rough grassland on the bank of the River Chelmer, with areas of woodland and thorn thicket. Over 230 plant species have been recorded, including St John's wort, hairy violet and musk mallow. Birds include several species of warbler, and 23 of butterflies.There is access from the west side of a roundabout at the junction of Essex Regiment Way and Channels Drive.
