Campbell Barracks

Mark Twain Village (MTV) was a United States Army military family housing area located in the Südstadt district of Heidelberg, Germany. It was one of the two main American family housing areas in the United States Army Garrison Heidelberg that provided quarters for American military personnel, authorized civilian employees, and their families (the other being Patrick Henry Village). MTV was located adjacent to Campbell Barracks, which served as the home to the Headquarters of United States Army Europe (USAREUR), the Headquarters for NATO's Allied Land Forces Central Europe (LANDCENT), and the Installation Management Command Europe Region (IMCOM-E). MTV was separated by a main thoroughfare. Located within the housing area was an Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) shoppette, a library, a chapel, the Mark Twain Elementary School, and the Heidelberg High School, which both served American military dependent children living in the surrounding area. The high school served students from Mark Twain Village, nearby Patrick Henry Village, and their respective surrounding areas. Heidelberg High was one of the largest DoDDS schools in Germany. It, along with all the other schools in the Heidelberg area, was closed in 2013.. Since 2017, Julius-Springer-Schule has occupied the former Heidelberg High School building at Mark-Twain-Straße 1. Most of MTV's housing area has been shut down (the area across the street from Campbell Barracks) and given back to the City of Heidelberg. Because the closed area had severed access from Campbell Barracks, the decision was made that this would be the first portion returned to the City of Heidelberg. It is currently being renovated with some buildings already accommodating German civilians.Another part of MTV's housing area is now being used by NATO personnel. For most of its existence, MTV was indistinguishable from the surrounding public residential buildings and was not fenced, gated, or otherwise closed to the general public until 2003, when a fence was installed around MTV and all other United States Army installations in Heidelberg. There was a requirement to show ID to enter the area. The entire compound, along with Campbell Barracks, was gated and required United States military ID to enter.

The Allied Command Europe Mobile Force (AMF) was a small NATO quick reaction force, headquartered at Heidelberg, Germany, active from 1960 to 2002. It formed part of Allied Command Europe (ACE), headquartered at SHAPE at Casteau, Belgium. The land component of the force, consisting of a brigade-sized formation of about 5,000 personnel, was composed of units from 14 NATO states. HQ CO US AMF(L) Infantry was at Coleman Barracks, Mannheim, GE 95-02 HQ AMF (L) was at Sullivan Barracks, Mannheim, 1975-78.

Heidelberg American High School was a school operated by the Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DoDDS) located on the premises of Mark Twain Village, a housing area for American military members and their families in Heidelberg, Germany. The school served 9–12 grade students (originally 7–12 until 1976 when Heidelberg Middle School, built for grades 6–8, was built on Patrick Henry Village) and offered a variety of high school courses. Heidelberg High School graduated its final class in 2013. Since 2017, Julius-Springer-Schule has occupied the old Heidelberg High School building at Mark-Twain-Straße 1.

Heidelberg-Südstadt ("South Town") is a district of the city of Heidelberg in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It is a relatively young district and was established after World War 2, by extending the Weststadt district to the south, and the Rohrbach district to the north. Today, it houses about 4,400 citizens (including about 600 people not registered as residentials of the suburb). Südstadt is the second-smallest district of Heidelberg by population, after Schlierbach.

Heidelberg-Kirchheim/Rohrbach station is the second busiest station after Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof in the city of Heidelberg in the German state of Baden-Württemberg. It is classified by Deutsche Bahn (DB) as a category 4 station. It has three platforms and it is in the area where fares are set by the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Neckar (Rhine-Neckar Transport Association, VRN). Since December 2003, it has been almost exclusively served by services on lines S3 and S4 of the Rhine-Neckar S-Bahn.

Weststadt ("West City") is a suburb of Heidelberg created during the 19th century, when Heidelberg expanded to the west along the railways during the Industrial Revolution. The development of Weststadt into the first suburb at the base of the Gaisberg hill is closely connected with Heidelberg's development into a metropolis. Following further expansion, the new suburbs of Südstadt and Bahnstadt were created to the south and west respectively. The central square is Wilhelmsplatz, which is used for regular events, daily recreation and a farmer's market on Mondays and Thursdays.

The Hochschule für Kirchenmusik Heidelberg is a university of church music in Heidelberg and one of the most renowned ones in Germany.Its predecessor, Evangelisches Kirchenmusikalisches Institut Heidelberg (KI, Protestant church music institute) was founded in 1931 by Meinhard Hermann Poppen to improve the training of church musicians for the Evangelical Church in Baden. It was modeled after the institute in Leipzig, where Poppen had previously studied with its founder, organist Karl Straube. The institute offers all church music subjects (organ and other instruments, choral conducting, singing) and theoretical subjects (harmony, counterpoint, figured bass, stylistics). After Poppens death in 1956, organist Herbert Haag was the director until 1973, succeeded by Wolfgang Herbst, Hermann Schäffer, and from 2006 to 2018 Bernd Stegmann, followed by Prof. Dr. Martin Mautner since 2018. Notable lecturers have included Wolfgang Fortner, Walter Leib, Helmut Tramnitz, Bruno Penzin, Heinz Werner Zimmermann, Kurt Bossler, Gerhard Wagner, Rolf Schweizer, Gudula Kremers, Hermann Schemmel, Eugen Polus, Gerhard Luchterhandt, Maria Mokhova and Martin Sander. Notable alumni have included Felix Hell, Martin Lutz, Erna Woll and Hans Rudolf Zöbeley.

The Fritz-Grunebaum-Sportpark is a rugby union stadium in Heidelberg, Germany. It is the home ground of the RG Heidelberg and also frequently used for international games of the Germany national rugby union team. In its 2008-2010 European Nations Cup First Division campaign, Germany played three of its five home games at the stadium, the other two being held at Heusenstamm and Hanover. The stadium is in the Kirchheim suburb of Heidelberg and is capable of holding 5,000 spectators, 380 of them in a roofed grandstand. It is named after Fritz Grunebaum, founder of the Karin Grunebaum Cancer Research Foundation.

St. Bonifatius is a Catholic church in the Weststadt of Heidelberg. It is a Romanesque Revival basilica with a transept and a facade with double towers, which was designed by Ludwig Maier and built between 1899 and 1903. The church is part of the parish of Philipp Neri in the pastoral unit of Heidelberg within the deaconate of Heidelberg-Weinheim, in the Archdiocese of Freiburg.

Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof (commonly known as Heidelberg HBF) is the main railway station for the city of Heidelberg. In 2005 it was used by around 42,000 passengers per day and is one of the largest passenger stations in the German state of Baden-Württemberg. The station is classified by Deutsche Bahn as a category 2 station.The first station was built in 1840 as a terminus near the old town of Heidelberg. Urban problems as a result of the extension of part of the station to form a through station in 1862 and a lack of expansion options resulted in a decision the early 20th century to relocate the station as a new through station a kilometre to the west. Interrupted by two world wars, the relocation of the Heidelberg railway facilities took over 50 years. Inaugurated in 1955, the station is now considered to be "the most beautiful and architecturally interesting buildings of Deutsche Bundesbahn", and since 1972 it has been listed as a "cultural monument of special importance" under the historical monuments register of Baden-Württemberg. The station is located in Willy-Brandt-Platz about two kilometres west of central Heidelberg. Diagonally opposite is the headquarters of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen. It is served by the Rhine-Neckar S-Bahn.

The Neckars Formation is a Pleistocene geologic formation in Germany. In the Sackdillinger Cave, it preserves fossils of the frogs Rana temporaria and Bufo sp. and the bear Ursus sackdillingensis.

Bergheim is a city district of Heidelberg. It is bounded on the North by the Neckar River, the East by the Bismarkplatz, on the South by the Kurfürsten Anlage and the South by the city line. It is a mostly urban residential area, however the Bergheim Campus of the University of Heidelberg has numerous buildings in the district. Since March 2009 the Heidelberg University Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences has occupied the former Ludolf Krehl clinic (after Ludolf von Krehl). Bergheim also has a number of parks, both along the river and near the Stadtbücherei.
