Gann Academy

The Murphy Army Hospital is a former hospital in Waltham, Massachusetts. The hospital grounds, now demolished, is now home to Gann Academy, Bentley University Residence Halls, and City of Waltham Veterans Memorial Park- which contains sport facilities. During its operation, it was also home to a sports team called the Murphy Medics. From June 1, 1949, to April 30, 1950, the hospital was the site of an experiment, ordered by the Surgeon General of the United States Army, Major General Raymond W. Bliss, to determine "to what extent women could be substituted for men in the operation of Army hospitals". During the 11-month period, 240 civilian women and members of the Women's Army Corps replaced men in the majority of medical and administrative jobs. However, no women Army doctors were available and "costs precluded the hospital's hiring of civilian women for the experiment." There are several remains of Murphy Hospital still surviving. The main driveway to the Hospital off Trapelo road remains with original brown wood sign holders as well as a lamp post at the end of the roadway. One building from Murphy Hospital remains. The original hospital maintenance shop is still standing on property behind Gann Academy.

The Whitney–Farrington–Cook House was a historic house in Waltham, Massachusetts. The 2+1⁄2-story wood-frame house was built c. 1858, and was a good example of Italianate styling. It had a three-bay facade, with a single-story porch across the facade which is supported by Tuscan columns. The main entry was flanked by sidelights and simple pilasters, and topped by an entablature.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. It was demolished circa 2012.

The Walter E. Fernald State School, later the Walter E. Fernald Developmental Center, was the Western hemisphere's oldest publicly funded institution serving people with developmental disabilities. Originally a Victorian sanatorium, it became a "poster child" for the American eugenics movement during the 1920s. It later was the scene of medical experiments in the 20th century. Investigations into this research led to new regulations regarding human research in children. The school occupies a 186 acres (75 ha) property off Trapelo Road in Waltham, Massachusetts.

Bentley University is a private university in Waltham, Massachusetts. Founded in 1917 as a school of accounting and finance in Boston's Back Bay neighborhood, Bentley moved to Waltham in 1968. Bentley awards Bachelor of Science degrees in 14 business fields and Bachelor of Arts degrees in 11 arts and sciences disciplines, offering 36 minors in arts and science and business disciplines. Bentley's athletic teams compete in Division II of the NCAA (except for men's hockey, which competes in Division I) and are known collectively as the Bentley Falcons. They compete in the Northeast-10 Conference.

The Ephraim Hammond House, also known as Cedar Hill, is a historic house at 265 Beaver Street in Waltham, Massachusetts. The two story wood-frame house was built in 1775, and is Waltham's only side-hall Georgian house. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. In the 19th century it became part of the Cedar Hill estate of Cornelia Lyman Warren, after which it was donated to the Massachusetts council of the Girl Scouts of the USA in the early 20th century. The house was restored under the auspices of the Girl Scouts and Helen Storrow, an early leader of the girls' scouting movement, and serves as one of the council's service centers.

Gaebler Children's Center was a psychiatric institution operated by the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health for severely mentally ill children and adolescents, located in Waltham, Massachusetts. The center opened on October 8, 1955, near the grounds of the Metropolitan State Hospital and closed in September 1992. It was named after William C. Gaebler, the second superintendent of the Metropolitan State Hospital. The Massachusetts Department of Mental Health (DMH) closed the center as it was antiquated and could no longer serve the needs of the children it housed. According to the DMH, this closure coincided with the decision to place mentally ill children in community settings instead of in institutional settings. Others felt the center was closed due to budget cuts. According to the Waltham Land Trust and The Boston Globe, the grounds of the Gaebler Center are currently being considered for redevelopment. (The Gaebler Center is now slated for Demolition with bids to be received prior to April 15, 2010)Demolition and site development contractor Testa Corp won the bid to begin destruction of the area, as indicated by a sign recently erected at the entrance. Mayor Jeanette McCarthy said the building was bought by the city of Waltham in 2005 in order to have some control over the development of the seven-acre site. Demolition of the Gaebler Children's Center was completed in January 2011. The work cost the City of Waltham approximately $637,000. There are no current plans for the 55-acre lot.

The Phineas Lawrence House is a historic house at 257 Trapelo Road in Waltham, Massachusetts. The 2+1⁄2-story wood-frame house was built c. 1807-08 by Phineas Lawrence, member of the locally prominent Lawrence family, who had owned land in the northeastern part of Waltham since the 17th century. The house is a well-preserved example of Federal styling. The Lawrence properties were extensive, and included land that was used for the nearby Metropolitan State Hospital.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

The Jonathan Hammond House is a historic house at 311 Beaver Street in Waltham, Massachusetts. The 2+1⁄2-story wood-frame house was built in 1785 by Jonathan Hammond, member of a prominent local family. The house has transitional late Georgian/early Federal styling, and is one of the more substantial houses of the period to survive in the city. It has also been owned by the Lymans and the Warrens, also locally prominent families.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. It is now owned by Bentley University and houses some of its offices.

The Henry Stewart House is a historic house at 294 Linden Street in Waltham, Massachusetts. The 2+1⁄2-story brick building was built c.1900–01, and is a rare local example of Jacobethan style. The house was built as the gardener's cottage for Cornelia Warren's Cedar Hill estate. The house was designed by Boston architect John A. Fox. Fox based his design on that of Nun Upton, a 17th-century English country house in Herefordshire near Brimfield which is now a Grade II listed building.The house has a T-shaped plan, with projecting end gables that project upward in curved Flemish styling. The second level above the main entrance is half-timbered wood construction. The walls have highlighting heavy beltcourses, and the chimneys are topped by corbelled pots.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

The Waltham Land Trust is a private, non-profit corporation that seeks to preserve open space in Waltham, Massachusetts. The trust currently sponsors many projects, including the protection of the grounds of the former Gaebler Children's Center.

The Metropolitan State Hospital was an American public hospital for the mentally ill, on grounds that extended across parts of Waltham, Lexington, and Belmont, Massachusetts. Founded in 1927, it was at one time the largest and most modern facility of its type in Massachusetts. It was closed in January 1992 as a result of the state's cost-cutting policy of closing its mental hospitals and moving patients into private and community-based settings. The main complex of buildings has subsequently been redeveloped into apartments. The hospital campus was listed on the National Register of Historic Places 1994. The property also housed the Gaebler Children's Center for mentally ill youth.

The Wellington–Castner House is a historic house in Waltham, Massachusetts. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
