Towns County School District

The Towns County Jail, also known as Old Towns County Jail, in Hiawassee, Georgia was built in 1935-36 by the Federal Emergency Relief Administration and modified in 1981. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. As of 1985, the building served as Hiawassee City Hall.It is a two-story rock building with a hipped roof.The Towns County Herald noted in 1936 that the completed jail was a "'modern, safe, sanitary, and commendable structure'" and praised Ordinary J. F. Johnson for his work building the jail, which cost $4,353 in total. It served as Towns County's jail until the 1970s, when a joint jail shared with Union County was built.It was one of seven county jails reviewed for National Register listing in 1985.

Hiawassee is the county seat of Towns County, Georgia, United States. The community's population was 880 at the 2010 census. Its name is derived from the Cherokee—or perhaps Creek—word Ayuhwasi, which means meadow, (A variant spelling, "Hiwassee," is used for the local river and some other Appalachian place names.) Hiawassee is also known in the novel "Restart" by Gordon Korman.

Hamilton Rhododendron Gardens is the only public botanical garden in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Georgia specializing in Rhododendrons and Native Azaleas. The protected area encompasses 33.0 acres (13.4 ha) on land sloping to Lake Chatuge. Hamilton Gardens at Lake Chatuge, Inc. was a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational organization that successfully restored the garden and operated it for six years. Located near the city of Hiawassee, Georgia, the gardens have the largest collection of native azalea and rhododendron in the Southeast U.S.

The Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds, which opened in 1978, is home to several popular events throughout the year including the Georgia Mountain Fair, Georgia Mountain Moonshine Cruiz-In, Georgia Mountain Fall Festival, Superstar concerts, and Georgia's Official State Fiddlers' Convention. Located on a 161-acre (0.65 km2) tact along the shores of Lake Chatuge in the north Georgia mountain community of Hiawassee, the Fairgrounds offers a glimpse into the past with its historic Pioneer Village, an expansive and comfortable music venue in the Anderson Music Hall, the Hamilton Rhododendron Gardens and 189 RV camp sites with lake views and modern conveniences.

Towns County is a county located in the northeastern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 12,493. Its county seat is Hiawassee. The county was created on March 6, 1856, and named for lawyer, legislator, and politician George W. Towns.

Fodder Creek is a stream in the U.S. state of Georgia.Fodder Creek was named after Chief Fodder, a Cherokee tribal leader. A variant name is "Fodders Creek".

Lake Chatuge is a man-made reservoir in Towns County, Georgia, and Clay County, North Carolina. It lies along the Hiwassee River created by the Chatuge Dam which finished construction in 1942. The lake is relatively shallow with depths of 30 feet (9.1 m) and reaches 144 feet (44 m) by the dam. Lake Chatuge is the highest major lake in the state of Georgia. Chatuge Lake takes up 7,000 acres (2,800 ha). The construction of Chatuge Dam and its reservoir required the purchase of 11,641 acres (4,711 ha) of land, 1,904 acres (771 ha) of which had to be cleared. 278 families, 532 graves, and 40 miles (64 km) of roads (including part of U.S. Route 64) had to be relocated. One house relocated from the Elf community during the clearing of the land later became the Clay County School District superintendent’s office until 2005.Chatuge Dam was raised ten feet in 1954 so the lake level could rise an additional four feet.

Chatuge Dam is a flood control and hydroelectric dam on the Hiwassee River in Clay County, in the U.S. state of North Carolina. The dam is the uppermost of three dams on the river owned and operated by the Tennessee Valley Authority, which built the dam in the early 1940s for flood storage and to provide flow regulation at Hiwassee Dam further downstream. The dam impounds the 7,000-acre (2,800 ha) Chatuge Lake, which straddles the North Carolina-Georgia state line. While originally built solely for flood storage, a generator installed at Chatuge in the 1950s gives the dam a small hydroelectric output. At the time it was built, Chatuge Dam was the highest earthen dam in the world until the Aswan Dam was built in Egypt in 1964. The dam and associated infrastructure was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017. Chatuge Dam is named for an 18th-century Cherokee village once situated near the dam site.

Brasstown is an extinct Cherokee village in Towns County, in the U.S. state of Georgia. The exact location of Brasstown is unknown to the GNIS. It was situated about 8 miles (13 km) southwest of present-day Hiawassee on the upper part of Brasstown Creek.The name "Brasstown" is the result of a mistranslation of its native Cherokee-language name Itse' yi, which correctly translates to "town of the green valley".

Brasstown Valley Resort & Spa is a 134 room resort just north of Young Harris, Georgia, surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains at 2,150-foot (660 m) elevation. The resort was built and opened in 1995. The property is adjacent to Brasstown Bald, the highest mountain in Georgia. Brasstown Valley Resort is the 503-acre (2.04 km2) home to a links style championship golf course which has hosted numerous tournaments including the LPGA Futures.The resort also features the Equani Spa, which opened in October 2008, and the Stables at Brasstown Valley Resort featuring 5 miles (8.0 km) of riding trails. Brasstown Valley Resort features 9 miles (14 km) of hiking trails including a trail that directly connects to the world famous Appalachian Trail that begins in Georgia and ends in Maine.

Brasstown Bald is the highest point in the U.S. state of Georgia. It is located in the northeastern part of the state in the Blue Ridge Mountains on the border between Towns and Union counties south of the city of Hiawassee. The mountain is known to the native Cherokee people as Enotah.

The Brasstown Wilderness was designated in 1986 and currently consists of 12,896 acres (52.19 km2). The Wilderness is located within the borders of the Chattahoochee National Forest in Union County and Towns County, Georgia. The Wilderness is managed by the United States Forest Service and is part of the National Wilderness Preservation System. The highest elevation in the Brasstown Wilderness is the 4,784-foot (1,458 m) peak of Brasstown Bald, which is also the highest point in Georgia. The land that forms the Wilderness drapes across the northern, northeastern, and southwestern flanks of Brasstown Bald. In addition to 14.1 miles (22.7 km) of trout streams and abundant wildlife, the Brasstown Bald is home to several threatened or endangered species such as the pygmy shrew.
