Backbarrow

The Lakeland Motor Museum is a museum now located at Backbarrow, Cumbria, England which houses a collection of classic cars, motorcycles, bicycles, pedal cars and motoring related items and memorabilia and an exhibition dedicated to the land and water speed record activities of Sir Malcolm Campbell and his son Donald Campbell.

The A590 is a trunk road in southern Cumbria, in the north-west of England. It runs north-east to south-west from M6 junction 36, through the towns of Ulverston and Barrow-in-Furness to terminate at Biggar Bank on Walney Island. The road is a mixture of dual carriageway and single carriageway, with the section east of Low Newton, Cumbria to the M6 being mainly dual. Further dual sections are south of Newby Bridge, south of Greenodd and south of Ulverston. The road is the main route for tourists entering the southern Lake District. It has often humorously been described as "the longest cul-de-sac in the world".

Bigland Barrow is a hill in the English Lake District, near Backbarrow, Cumbria. It is the subject of a chapter of Wainwright's book The Outlying Fells of Lakeland. It reaches 630 feet (190 m), and there is a concrete lookout tower on the summit which Wainwright describes as "a wartime relic". Wainwright's route is an anticlockwise circuit from Newby Bridge.

Bigland Tarn is a lake in Cumbria, England, about 3/4 mile southeast of Haverthwaite. Located at an elevation of 158 m (518 ft), the lake has an area of 5.1 hectares (13 acres) and measures 325 m × 225 m (1,066 ft × 738 ft).

Haverthwaite is a small village and civil parish in the Furness region of Cumbria, England. It is also within the boundaries of the Lake District National Park. It is located several miles east of Ulverston and is near the southern end of Windermere. In the 2001 census the parish had a population of 728, increasing at the 2011 census to 797.The village gets part of its name from the Old Norse word thwaite which usually refers to a clearing or settlement in the forest.

Newby Bridge Halt (also known, historically, as Newby Bridge Platform) is a railway station on the Lakeside and Haverthwaite heritage railway. It serves the village of Newby Bridge, Cumbria, England.

Newby Bridge is a small hamlet in the Lake District, Cumbria, England. Historically in Lancashire, it is located several miles west of Grange-over-Sands and is on the River Leven, close to the southern end of Windermere. The hamlet is the site of an intermediate halt on the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway. A terrace of houses adjoining the railway were built by the Furness Railway for its workers. The A590 road runs through Newby Bridge connecting Barrow-in-Furness to the M6 motorway close to Kendal.

Finsthwaite Heights is an upland area in the English Lake District, above Finsthwaite, Cumbria. It is the subject of a chapter of Wainwright's book The Outlying Fells of Lakeland. It reaches about 600 feet (180 m). Wainwright's walk starts from Newby Bridge, climbs through woodland passing a tower which has a 1799 inscription commemorating the Royal Navy, passes through the village, and climbs to the man-made tarns of Low Dam and High Dam. These were made to provide power for Stott Park Bobbin Mill. Wainwright says of his route: "Everywhere the surroundings are delightful. But this is not fellwalking."

Finsthwaite is a small village in the South Lakeland district, in the county of Cumbria, England. It is located near the Furness Fells and Windermere. Finsthwaite has a place of worship, St Peter's Church, and a Bobbin Mill called Stott Park Bobbin Mill, now a working museum. Finsthwaite is in the civil parish of Colton.

St Peter's Church is in the village of Finsthwaite, Cumbria, England. It is an active Anglican parish church in the deanery of Windermere, the archdeaconry of Westmorland and Furness, and the diocese of Carlisle. Formerly part of the Leven Valley benefice, together with St Anne Haverthwaite and St Mary Staveley-in-Cartmel, it is now part of the Cartmel Peninsula Team Ministry. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building. St Peter's was designed by the Lancaster partnership of Paley and Austin. They were the winners of a competition to design "mountain chapels" organised by the Carlisle Church Extension Society in 1873. The authors of the Buildings of England series describe the church as "a brilliant essay", and write that "one would have to search far and search long in England to find village churches to vie with" this and two other Austin and Paley churches, Torver and Dolphinholme. The church stands to the southeast of the village.
