Burnfoot, Roberton

Roberton is a small village in the Scottish Borders area of Scotland, on the B711 and near to the A7, 5 miles (8 kilometres) from Hawick, 22 mi (35 km) from Galashiels, and 23 mi (37 km) from Langholm. It is situated by the Ale Water, the Alemoor Loch and the Borthwick Water, and nearby are Branxholme, Broadhaugh, Burnfoot and the Craik Forest.

Alemoor Loch, also known as Alemoor Reservoir, is a small reservoir in the Scottish Borders area of Scotland. It is situated on the Ale Water, 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) west of Hawick. The loch is approximately 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) long, and is divided in two by a causeway which carries the B711 road. In the 19th century, the loch was recorded as being round in shape, 0.4 kilometres (0.25 mi) across, and up to 55 metres (180 ft) deep. The loch was said to be the home of a "water-cow" or kelpie, and another tradition told of a child being carried off by an eagle and dropped into the loch. John Leyden (1775–1811) mentioned the darker associations of the loch in his 1803 poem Scenes of Infancy. In the 1960s a dam was constructed and the loch was enlarged to its present size. An existing farmhouse was not removed, and its chimney pots can be seen in when the water level is extremely low. The loch is now used for coarse fishing, with the main species being pike, perch and roach. The remains of a tower at Wester Alemoor, which had formerly stood by the loch, were destroyed by a new road before 1962. A large flint blade was discovered by the loch in 2003.

Harden Castle is a 16th-century tower house, about 3.5 miles (5.6 km) west of Hawick, Scottish Borders. It is alternatively known as Harden House or Harden Tower. The castle is situated strongly, above a deep ravine.

Broadhaugh is a hamlet in the Scottish Borders area of Scotland, in the parish of Teviothead, in former Roxburghshire.

Newmill-on-Teviot, commonly called Newmill, is a hamlet in the Scottish Borders, 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) south of Hawick on the River Teviot. The remains of Allanmouth Tower, a 16th-century tower house, lie to the south-east of the settlement.

Branxholme is a hamlet in the Scottish Borders area of Scotland, overlooking the River Teviot, 3 miles (5 kilometres) southwest of Hawick, on the A7 road to Langholm. Nearby are Ale Water, Alemoor Loch, Burnfoot, Borthwick Water, Colterscleugh Monument, Roberton, Stobs Castle, Teviothead and Wilton

Branxholme Castle is a five-storey tower at Branxholme, about 3 miles south-west of Hawick in the Borders region of Scotland.

The Borthwick Water (Border Scots: Borthwick Witter) is a river in the Scottish Borders area of Scotland, and a tributary of the River Teviot. The Aithouse Burn, the Howpasley Burn, and the Northhope Burn (amongst others) are some of the feeder burns for what becomes the Borthwick Water at Craik, in the heart of the Craik Forest. The Water continues via Meadshaw, Muselee, and Deanburnhaugh, to Burnfoot and Roberton until it joins the Teviot at Borthaugh and Martinshouse, at the end of the B711, and less than 2 miles from the centre of Hawick. Places of interest nearby are the Alemoor Loch reservoir and Borthaugh Hill, as well as the villages of Borthwickshiels, Branxholme, Broadhaugh, and Buccleuch.

Salenside is a village off the A7, on the Ale Water, near Ashkirk, in the Scottish Borders area of Scotland, in the former Selkirkshire. There was a Salenside Tower house, but nothing remains of it. Salenside Farm and Salenside Cottage exist. The placenames Selkirk and Salenside are related. Other places nearby include Appletreehall, Essenside, Hawick, Lilliesleaf, Philiphaugh, and Woll.

Ashkirk is a small village on the Ale Water, in the Scottish Borders area of Scotland. It is located just off the A7 road, approximately 6 miles (10 kilometres) each way between Selkirk to the north and Hawick to the south. Other places nearby include the Alemoor Loch, Appletreehall, Belses, Essenside Loch, the Ettrick Water, Ettrickbridge, Philiphaugh, Salenside and Woll. The village is home to the Woll golf course, Ashkirk Village Hall, and the Smiddy Bar & Restaurant

Woll is a village on the Ale Water, off the A7, in the Ettrick Forest, north of Hawick, and south of Selkirk in the Scottish Borders area of Scotland.

Williestruther Loch is a lochan (small loch) in the Scottish Borders, just 2.2 km south of Hawick. Its name derives from the Scots word for marsh, "struther" and the diminutive form of William, ergo: "William's Marsh". This refers to the site on which the loch now sits, which, prior to damworks in the 19th century, was a boggy wetland. Beneath the loch is a bed of till and diamicton dating to the last Ice Age. Today, Williestruther Loch is maintained by Hawick Angling Club for fishing rainbow trout. An access carpark and several nature trails were built in the late-2010s.
