Overton Rural District was formed by the Local Government Act 1894 which created numerous administrative areas around the country. The district was located in an exclave of Flintshire known as English Maelor, surrounded by Cheshire, Denbighshire and Shropshire. It consisted of eleven civil parishes: Bangor on Dee Bettisfield Bronington Halghton Hanmer Iscoyd Overton Penley Tybroughton Willington WorthenburyOverton Rural District was renamed Maelor Rural District in 1953.

Maelor was a rural district in the administrative county of Flintshire, Wales, from 1894 to 1974. The area approximated to the hundred of Maelor or English Maelor (Welsh: Maelor Saesneg), and was notable for forming a detached part of the county, surrounded by Cheshire, Denbighshire and Shropshire. The administrative centre was located at Overton. The district was formed as Overton Rural District by the Local Government Act 1894 from the Flintshire parishes of Ellesmere, Whitchurch and Wrexham Rural Sanitary Districts. It was renamed as Maelor Rural District in 1953. It consisted of eleven civil parishes: Bangor on Dee Bettisfield Bronington Halghton Hanmer Iscoyd Overton Penley Tybroughton Willington WorthenburyThe district was abolished in 1974 by the Local Government Act 1972, when it was merged into Wrexham Maelor, one of six districts of the new County of Clwyd.

The River Clywedog is a river in Wrexham County Borough, Wales. Its uses have been watering crops, powering industrial machinery but is now used as walking trails or geography trips. The river originates to the west of Wrexham, and joins the River Dee some four miles south east of the city.

The Wych Brook, Worthenbury Brook and Red Brook, formerly known as the River Elfe, is a tributary of the River Dee in England and Wales, forming part of both the historic and present-day border between the two countries. The stream forms part of the border between Cheshire and Shropshire in England to the east, and Wales, particularly the Maelor Saesneg (a detached portion of Historic Flintshire, now within Wrexham County Borough), to the west.

Crewe-by-Farndon is a settlement and former civil parish, now in the parish of Farndon, in the borough of Cheshire West and Chester and ceremonial county of Cheshire in England. In 2001 it had a population of around 45. The civil parish was abolished in 2015 and merged into Farndon.There is a small Methodist Chapel, founded in 1858, located on Crewe Lane South. This was originally Primitive Methodist but is now part of the South Cheshire Circuit and the local Cheshire Hills Mission Area.The parish contained one listed building, Crewe Hill, which is designed at Grade II. This grade is the lowest of the three gradings given to listed buildings and is applied to "buildings of national importance and special interest".

Marchwiel power station was an electricity generating plant providing a central source of electric current for the Marchwiel Trading Estate near Wrexham. It was under state ownership and operation from 1950 to 1960.

Church Shocklach is a former civil parish, now in the parish of Shocklach Oviatt and District, in the Borough of Cheshire West and Chester and ceremonial county of Cheshire in England. In 2001 it had a population of 113, increasing to 290 at the 2011 Census. The parish included most of the village of Shocklach. The civil parish was abolished in 2015 to form Shocklach Oviatt and District.

Holt Castle (Welsh: Castell Holt) was a medieval castle in the village of Holt, Wrexham County Borough, Wales. Work began in the 13th century during the Welsh Wars, the castle was sited on the Welsh–English border by the banks of the River Dee. In the medieval period, the five-towered fortress was actually known as Castrum Leonis or Castle Lyons because it had a lion motif carved into the stonework above its main gate. In the 17th century, almost all the stonework was removed from the site; only the sandstone foundation and a small amount of masonry survives.

Crewe Hill is a country house near Crewe by Farndon, to the southeast of the village of Farndon, Cheshire, England. It was enlarged from a farmhouse for the Barnston family of Churton Hall in the early 19th century. In about 1890 it was extended, including the addition of a dining room to the rear. The building is rendered, and has slate roofs. It is in two storeys, and is symmetrical, with a central gable and wings with gables. A cottage is attached to its right. Internally there is a central Great Hall rising through both storeys. This has a gallery and contains a collection of items of antiquarianism. The house and the attached cottage are recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade listed building.

Holt is a medieval village and community in Wrexham County Borough, Wales. It is situated on the border with England and in the historic county of Denbighshire. Holt Castle was begun by Edward I shortly after the English conquest of Wales in 1277. Farndon lies just over the River Dee.

HM Prison Berwyn (Welsh: Carchar Berwyn EF; Welsh: ['bɛrwɪn]) is a £250 million Category C adult male prison in Wrexham County Borough, Wales. It is the largest prison in the UK, opened in 2017, and is operated by His Majesty's Prison Service.

Sesswick is a community in Wrexham County Borough, Wales. It lies south-east of Wrexham near Marchwiel. The population of the community at the 2011 Census was 609. The area was historically part of Denbighshire, where it was one of the townships of the parish of Bangor Monachorum (Bangor-on-Dee). The neighbouring township of Royton was incorporated in it in 1935. The name Sesswick, recorded as Sesewyke in 1286, is one of the names indicating an early English presence in this part of north-east Wales; it is possibly derived from the Old English personal name "Seassa", along with -wic, meaning "settlement". However, the Wrexham historian Alfred Neobard Palmer, noting that the name was recorded as Chespric (actually Chespuic) in the Domesday of Cheshire, speculated that it may have come from "Chadswick" in reference to land in the township being owned by St. Chad, the first bishop of Mercia.The community's only village is Cross Lanes: it also includes several small hamlets (though no settlement itself having the name of Sesswick). In the 2001 census Sesswick had a total population of 591 in 236 households.The area gave its name to a rural station, Sesswick Halt railway station, on the former Cambrian Railways' Wrexham and Ellesmere Railway; the line and station closed in 1962.
