Hatton Canyon

Carmel High School is a school of 874 students and 50-plus faculty members, situated directly off of Highway 1 within the city of Carmel, California. It is a part of Carmel Unified School District. Carmel High is known for its view of the Santa Lucia Mountains with a peek of Point Lobos and the Pacific Ocean. It is in one of the most affluent school districts in California, due to a state law which allows the school to opt out of ADA (average daily attendance) funding, choosing instead to receive revenue from local property taxes, which in Carmel's case, are quite high. As a result, Carmel High School salary schedules for teachers, counselors, and administrators are among some of the highest in the state of California. Carmel Unified School District is the second largest geographical district in the state of California enrolling students up to 40 miles (64 km) south of Carmel and 20 miles (32 km) east. Communities represented by Carmel USD, which has Carmel High as its only comprehensive high school, include Carmel-by-the-Sea, the majority of Carmel Valley Village, and sections of Del Monte Forest. The district also includes Big Sur, and Pebble Beach. Built in 1940, the school has recently made significant capital improvements including a new performing arts theater, math wing, science wing, and library with plans to renovate the current administration building. Both the theater and science wing utilized "green" construction practices, such as energy efficient lights and appliances.

Hatton Fields is an unincorporated community southeast of downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea in Monterey County, California, United States. Homes have views of Carmel Valley, Point Lobos, and Carmel Bay. The residential neighborhood is bordered by Rio Road to the south, Hatton Road to the north, Hatton Canyon to the east, and Junipero Street to the west. The terrain is rolling and naturally landscaped with mature oaks, redwoods, and Monterey Pine trees. Carmel High School, Carmel Mission, and Flanders Mansion are landmarks in this neighborhood. Carmel Mission and Flanders Mansion are two properties that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Mission Trail Nature Preserve runs adjacent to Hatton Fields. Homes are part of the Carmel Unified School District.

The Forest Theater is an historic amphitheater in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. Founded in 1910, it is one of the oldest outdoor theaters west of the Rockies. Actor/director Herbert Heron is generally cited as the founder and driving force, and poet/novelist Mary Austin is often credited with suggesting the idea. As first envisioned, original works by California authors, children's theatre, and the plays of Shakespeare were the primary focus. Since its inception, a variety of artists and theatre groups have presented plays, pageants, musical offerings and other performances on the outdoor stage, and the facility's smaller indoor theatre and school.

Outlands in the Eighty Acres, also known as Flanders Mansion is an 8,000-square-foot Tudor Revival house. It is significant as a work of architect Henry Higby Gutterson and for its innovative construction with light grey interlocking Precast concrete blocks. The mansion is preserved within the Mission Trail Nature Preserve in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on March 23, 1989.

The Carmel Fire Station, also known as Station No. 15, is a historic two-story fire station in downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. The firehouse is an example of Modern Civic and WPA style architecture. The fire station qualified as an important building in the city's downtown historic district property survey and was registered with the California Register of Historical Resources on April 25, 2002. The Carmel fire station is still in operation.

The Bernard Wetzel Building is a historic commercial building in downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. It is an example of Spanish Eclectic Revival style architecture. The building qualified as an important building in the city's downtown historic district property survey and was registered with the California Register of Historical Resources on September 7, 2004. The building has been occupied by Whittakers since 1989.

The Adam Fox Building, is a historic mixed-use commercial building in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. This building and the Schweninger Building a.k.a. Carmel Bakery, appear on the Sanborn Fire Maps for 1910. They are both unique for their second floor Victorian false-front bay windows. The two buildings are the oldest buildings that existed before the incorporation of Carmel-by-the-Sea in 1916. The structure is recognized as an important commercial building in the city's Downtown Conservation District Historic Property Survey, and was nominated and submitted to the California Register of Historical Resources on July 31, 2002. The building is now occupied by the Adam Fox Cutlery and the Bohemian Boutique.

Carmel Plaza is a 111,980 sq ft (10,403 m2) self-described "upscale, outdoor lifestyle shopping center" in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California in the block bounded by Ocean, Junipero, Mission and 7th streets. It is currently anchored by Sur la Table, and Anthropologie and is home to luxury goods retailers such as Tiffany. Three stories of shops surround an open-air courtyard. Despite its small size, the center has been host to small branches of three department stores. At opening on August 18, 1960, I. Magnin opened a 10,000 sq ft (930 m2) store here. Both the store and the center were designed by architect Olof Dahlstrand. Joseph Magnin opened in 1974. After the Joseph Magnin chain closed in 1984, Saks Fifth Avenue opened on May 31, 1986.The shopping mall was built in 1960 by Gerson Bakar and Steve Jacobs. It was sold to Macerich in 1998, and again to the O'Connor Group in 2012.

The Doud Building, also known as the James Doud Building is a historic commercial building in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. James Cooper Doud established the building in 1932, built by master builder Michael J. Murphy as a mixed-use retail shop and residence. It is an example of a Spanish Colonial Revival architecture style building. The structure is recognized as an important commercial building in the city's Downtown Conservation District Historic Property Survey, and was nominated and submitted to the California Register of Historical Resources on February 21, 2003.

The Carmel Art Association (CAA) is a Not-for-profit arts organization and gallery located in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. The CAA is Carmel's oldest gallery. It features the work of many local artists living on the Monterey Peninsula. Many of its members were early California artists. The CAA is a 501(c)(3) organization. CAA was recorded with the National Register of Historic Places on May 10, 2002.

The Sunset Center is located in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, United States. It is a performing arts center which features concerts, comedy, theatre, and dance. Formerly the Sunset School, the site was purchased by the city of Carmel in 1965 with the plan to develop it into a cultural center. It is home to the Carmel Bach Festival. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on January 9, 1998.

Cottage Gallery was an art gallery that was located in Carmel, California. It was owned and operated by George Goff. It opened in November 1984, and closed in 2001. The gallery mostly showed original oil paintings by living artists. Its significance arose primarily from the involvement of artist Thomas Kinkade, a friend of Goff's. Kinkade suggested its name because of Carmel's quaint look and because the building that housed the gallery had a pseudo-cottage feel. It was located at the corner of Sixth and Mission. He also designed the logo which appeared on the gallery's main outdoor sign and all stationary and collateral material. Cottage Gallery was one of the first galleries in which Kinkade showed his paintings. Kinkade produced paintings under a “brush name” of Robert Girrard and Cottage Gallery was the only gallery that showed those paintings. For decades only a handful of people knew that Robert Girrard was Thomas Kinkade.
