The River Leen is a 15-mile (24 km) long tributary of the River Trent that flows through Nottinghamshire, and the city of Nottingham in the East Midlands of England. The name Leen developed through various renderings of the Celtic word meaning "lake" or "pool" (Llyn in modern Welsh). Some of the surrounding villages derived their name from the River Leen. Lenton, ton being the Saxon word for "village"; and Linby, by being the Danish equivalent of ton.

South Wilford was a civil parish in Nottinghamshire from 1894 to 1935. It was formed under the Local Government Act 1894 from the parts of the parishes of Wilford and Lenton which were not part of the county borough of Nottingham. It formed part of the Basford Rural District. In 1935, under a County Review Order, the parish became part of the West Bridgford urban district. The part of the parish west of the railway line was added to the city of Nottingham in 1952.

The Horizon Building is a former cigarette-making factory on a 45-acre site at the Lenton Industrial Estate in Nottingham, built for Player's, which was designed by the architect Peter Foggo for Arup Associates, opened in 1972, and won the Financial Times Architecture Award for 1973. It is now owned by owned by Imperial Tobacco. In 2015 it looked likely to be rejected for listing, meaning that it would probably be demolished. When the factory closed in March 2016 it was England's last remaining cigarette factory.According to the Twentieth Century Society, "what makes Horizon fearsome is its structure ... Horizon looks as good today as when it was built".

Lenton Priory was a Cluniac monastic house in Nottinghamshire, founded by William Peverel circa 1102-8. The priory was granted a large endowment of property in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire by its founder, which became the cause of violent disagreement following its seizure by the crown and its reassignment to Lichfield Cathedral. The priory was home mostly to French monks until the late 14th century when the priory was freed from the control of its foreign mother-house. From the 13th-century the priory struggled financially and was noted for "its poverty and indebtedness". The priory was dissolved as part of King Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries.
