East Mey

Galltair is a remote coastal, scattered crofting township and former fishing village, on the north coast of Caithness, Scottish Highlands, in the Scottish council area of Highland. The settlement overlooks Gills Bay and consists of Upper Gills to the south and the main township on the coast. The township is between the villages of Mey to the west along the A836 coast road, and the village of Canisbay to the east. A ferry terminal on Gills Bay has a service to Orkney.

The Castle of Mey (also known for a time as Barrogill Castle) is located in Caithness, on the north coast of Scotland, about 6 miles (10 km) west of John o' Groats. In fine weather there are views from the castle north to the Orkney Islands.

The Castle of Mey lies 1 mi (1.6 km) northeast overlooking Mey Bay. There is also a hotel run in the former coaching inn.

Gills Bay, which is situated about 3 mi (4.8 km) west of John o' Groats with the community of Gills close by, has one of the longest stretches of low-lying rock coast on the northern shores of Caithness. Its main features are a small harbour and the pier used as the mainland terminal for Pentland Ferries. The harbour shelters some small local boats together with those used for working the sheep on the off lying island of Stroma. In the right sea conditions the area is sometimes used for surfing.

Harrow is a hamlet on the north coast of Caithness, Scotland. It lies just to the west of the Castle of Mey and northeast of the Loch of Mey. Harrow Harbour, also called Philips Harbour, was built in the 19th century by the Earl of Caithness for exporting the local flagstone slabs. The harbour was restored in 1978–79 by the Highland Council and is used today by a few crab and lobster fishermen. During the restoration works Alexander (Derry) Ross, who had spent several years at sea and was now working on the project, used his Stanley knife to carve images of fishing vessels in the concrete of the sea wall before it set. Originally brightly coloured these are now faded but are still visible. On completion of the works Jimmy Page carried out the official opening ceremony and a plaque commemorating this is mounted on the harbour wall.

The Pentland Firth (Scottish Gaelic: An Caol Arcach, meaning the Orcadian Strait) is a strait which separates the Orkney Islands from Caithness in the north of Scotland. Despite the name, it is not a firth.

Canisbay Parish Church is a Church of Scotland church in Canisbay, Scotland, that dates back to the early 1600s and is the most northernly church on mainland Britain. It is a Category A listed building. It is surrounded by a large cemetery, which is split into two sections, the new and old. It features a square bell tower, nave and a porch. The porch was added in 1891, when the other extensions and work was completed to the church building. The church was rebuilt in the 17th century, and ancient remains were discovered after a wall collapsed in the cemetery. Jan De Groot, the man who founded John o' Groats, is buried in Canisbay cemetery; his tombstone sits in the church building and is a popular tourist attraction when the building is open for visitors every summer. The book Lest We Forget: The Parish of Canisbay (1996) is a "miscellany of memories written by parishioners and friends so that future generations can know what made Canisbay a very special place". Between 1959 and 2001 Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother was a regular worshipper at the church during her periods of residence, usually in late summer each year, at the nearby Castle of Mey, which she owned.

MeyGen (full name MeyGen tidal energy project) is a tidal stream energy plant in the north of Scotland. The project is located in the Pentland Firth, specifically the Inner Sound between the Island of Stroma and the Scottish mainland. It is currently being constructed in a phased manner. The first phase of the project uses four 1.5 MW turbines with 18 m (59 ft) rotor diameter which were installed submerged on the seabed in winter 2016/17.The project is owned and run by SIMEC Atlantis Energy, although previously by Tidal Power Scotland Limited and Scottish Enterprise. Meygen was claimed to be the "world’s largest tidal stream power project". There are plans for up to 400 MW to be installed at the site.The high speed of currents in the area, reaching up to 5 m/s (11 mph), made the chosen site in the Pentland Firth well suited to this type of energy generation.

Loch of Mey is a loch near the north coast of Caithness, Scotland, and one of the most northern water features of mainland Britain. It lies just to the south of Skarfskerry, and southwest of Harrow. Described as a "shallow ephemeral loch fringed by fen", due to its importance in facilitating wintering populations of whooper swan and greylag goose from Greenland and Iceland, it has formed part of the Caithness Lochs Ramsar Site since February 1998. Ornithologists of the Scottish Ornithologists Club have established a footpath and memorial hide dedicated to James MacIntyre, which was renovated in August 2005. The Burn of Horsegrow flows into the loch on its southeastern side.

Canisbay is a rural hamlet located about one mile (1.5 kilometres) southwest of Huna and two and a half miles (four kilometres) southwest of John o' Groats in Caithness, Scottish Highlands, and is in the Scottish council area of Highland. It lies on the A836 coast road, which bypasses the hamlet to the north.It is home to Canisbay Primary School, a Village Hall, Medical Practice, and two Churches, one of which was the church used by Charles III. The Church is also the burial place of Jean De Groot, the ferryman after which John o' Groats is named. The Parish of Canisbay includes John o' Groats, Upper and Lower Gills, Huna and Freswick. Canisbay Juniors are the "feeder" team to John o' Groats FC with many of the key first team players having played for the side at one time. They play in the youth development leagues in Caithness where they enter teams at all age groups. It is also home to Canisbay Rifle club, who regularly compete in the Caithness Rifle Leagues. The Canisbay Show is the local agricultural and crafts show held mid-June each year in the park behind the village hall, with the JCB competition, the karate display and mainly the Beer Tent being the big attractions.

Skarfskerry (or Scarfskerry; Scottish Gaelic: Sgarbh Sgeir) is a settlement located in the far northern county Caithness on a small peninsula northeast of Thurso off the A836 in Scotland. It is the most northerly settlement in Great Britain. The name comes from the Old Norse for "cormorants' rock". Historically, it belonged to the Parish of Dunnet, along with Brough.
