Brame House

The Gerald–Dowdell House, in Montgomery, Alabama, was built c.1854. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.It was built by Perley and Camilla (Sanford) Buckley Gerald. Perley Gerald, a native of New York, moved to Alabama in 1829, first settling in Mobile before moving to the Montgomery area to trade with the Creek Indians. During the Gold Rush of 1849, Gerald went west and made a fortune trading with the miners. He later married Camilla Sanford Buckley, whose brother was General John Williams Sanford of Georgia and whose nephew was Colonel J.W.A. Sanford, Jr., who designed the State flag. According to local tradition, Herman Arnold, conductor of the orchestra at the Montgomery Theater, was renting the front corner room of the house in 1861, at the outbreak of the Civil War. Arnold arranged “Dixie” as a march and led the Montgomery Brass Band in the inaugural parade. Another local inhabitant was Robert T. Simpson, a Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court who lived in the building from 1940 to 1949. The building is within walking distance of several key sites in the civil rights movement, including Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, where Dr. Martin Luther King once served as pastor. The Gerald–Dowdell House is one of the few large raised cottages remaining in Montgomery, and has undergone substantial rehabilitation as part of its conversion for use as a law office for the firm of Wilkerson & Bryan, P.C. In 2000, construction was completed on a new building connected to the historic structure through what was once an enclosed back porch. The addition was designed to convey the image of a carriage house, in keeping with the historic nature of the site.

The Scott Street Firehouse in Montgomery, Alabama, was built in 1889. The originally Late Victorian building was renovated after 1900. It was built when Montgomery had expanded up the hill, so that horses would not have to haul equipment uphill. Horses were used until 1926, when it got motorized equipment, and the building was used as a fire station until 1966. In 1980, the building was renovated for use as office space.

The Dowe Historic District is a 1-acre (0.40 ha) historic district in Montgomery, Alabama. It includes 320 and 334 Washington Avenue and 114–116 South Hull Street. The architectural style of the four contributing buildings ranges from Greek Revival to Queen Anne. The district was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 29, 1988.

The Governor Thomas G. Jones House is a historic Victorian-style house in Montgomery, Alabama. The two-story frame building was built in 1855. It is best known as Governor Thomas G. Jones Mansion, Alabama's 28th Governor. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 8, 1978.

St. Peter Catholic Church is the first Roman Catholic Church in Montgomery, Alabama, and the third oldest Catholic church in Alabama. It was opened in 1834, but had no resident pastor until 1850. Many of the church's original parishioners were converts from wealthy, educated, Protestant families.

The Civil Rights Memorial is an American memorial in Montgomery, Alabama, created by Maya Lin. The names of 41 people are inscribed on the granite fountain as martyrs who were killed in the civil rights movement. The memorial is sponsored by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) is an American 501(c)(3) nonprofit legal advocacy organization specializing in civil rights and public interest litigation. Based in Montgomery, Alabama, it is known for its legal cases against white supremacist groups, for its classification of hate groups and other extremist organizations, and for promoting tolerance education programs.: 1500  The SPLC was founded by Morris Dees, Joseph J. Levin Jr., and Julian Bond in 1971 as a civil rights law firm in Montgomery.In 1980, the SPLC began a litigation strategy of filing civil suits for monetary damages on behalf of the victims of violence from the Ku Klux Klan. The SPLC also became involved in other civil rights causes, including cases to challenge what it sees as institutional racial segregation and discrimination, inhumane and unconstitutional conditions in prisons and detention centers, discrimination based on sexual orientation, mistreatment of illegal immigrants, and the unconstitutional mixing of church and state. The SPLC has provided information about hate groups to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and other law enforcement agencies.Since the 2000s, the SPLC's classification and listings of hate groups (organizations it has assessed either "attack or malign an entire class of people, typically for their immutable characteristics") and extremists have often been described as authoritative and are widely accepted and cited in academic and media coverage of such groups and related issues. The SPLC's listings have also been the subject of criticism from those who argue that some of the SPLC's listings are overbroad, politically motivated, or unwarranted. There have also been accusations of misuse or unnecessarily extravagant use of funds by the organization, leading some employees to call the headquarters "Poverty Palace".In 2019, founder Morris Dees was fired following accusations of sexual harassment, which was followed by President Richard Cohen's resignation. An outside consultant, Tina Tchen, was brought in to review workplace practices, particularly relating to accusations of racial and sexual harassment. Margaret Huang, who was formerly the Chief Executive at Amnesty International USA, was named as president and CEO of the SPLC in early February 2020.

The Supreme Court of Alabama is the highest court in the state of Alabama. The court consists of a chief justice and eight associate justices. Each justice is elected in partisan elections for staggered six-year terms. The Supreme Court is housed in the Heflin-Torbert Judicial Building in downtown Montgomery, Alabama.The Governor of Alabama may fill vacancies when they occur for the remainder of unexpired terms. The current partisan line-up for the court is all Republican. There is no specific limitation on the number of terms to which a member may be elected. However, the state constitution under Amendment 328, adopted in 1973, prohibits any member from seeking election once they have attained the age of seventy years. This amendment would have prohibited then Chief Justice Roy Moore from seeking re-election in 2018. However, on April 26, 2017, Moore announced his intent to run for the United States Senate seat formerly held by United States Attorney General Jeff Sessions, and resigned from the court.The current Clerk of Court is Margaret "Megan" Byrne Rhodebeck, who assumed the office by appointment on August 1, 2022.

Heflin-Torbert Judicial Building, commonly called the Alabama Judicial Building, is a state government building in Montgomery, Alabama. It houses several state judicial agencies, most notably the Supreme Court of Alabama, Alabama Court of Civil Appeals, and Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals. It is the first state court building in the United States to house all three courts under one roof. Additionally, it houses the State Law Library.The neoclassical-style structure was completed in 1994 at a cost of approximately $35 million.In 2001, Roy Moore, who was Chief Justice at the time, placed a Ten Commandments monument on public display in the rotunda of the building. This placement of a religious monument in a government judicial building caused a nationwide controversy.

The Perry Street Historic District is a historic district in Montgomery, Alabama. Covering approximately 170 acres (69 ha) in the southern portion of downtown, the district originally developed as a residential area. Included are several well-preserved antebellum structures, including the Greek Revival Teague House and Lomax House, the Federal/Greek Revival Cody House, the Dutch Colonial Hannon-Washburne House, the Italianate Greil Mansion, and the Spanish Mission style St. Peter's Catholic Church. Also notable are the Beaux-Arts Carnegie library, several Victorian houses (such as the Pepperman House), the International Style Grove Court Apartments, and the Gothic Revival First Baptist Church. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.

The Stay House is a historic residence in Montgomery, Alabama. The house was built in 1893 for physician and politician John Howard Henry. Henry studied medicine in New York and Philadelphia before returning to Montgomery to practice. After his father's death in 1857 he moved to Selma and became active in politics, and was mayor at the end of the Civil War. Henry became active in the Republican Party, but abandoned his political career in the early 1880s, returning to Montgomery and resuming his medical practice. The house is a two-story, brick veneer Victorian structure, with some Eastlakian trim. The three-bay façade has a gabled bay to the right of a central, square tower, both of which feature horseshoe shaped ventilators. A flat-roofed porch covers the left two bays. The arched front doorway has alternating stone voussoirs and a four-segment fanlight. The main block has a center-hall plan, with a one-story rear kitchen wing and enclosed rear porch. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Dexter Avenue Baptist Church is a Baptist church in Montgomery, Alabama, United States, affiliated with the Progressive National Baptist Convention. The church was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1974 because of its importance in the civil rights movement and American history. In 1978 the official name was changed to the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church, in memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who was pastor there and helped organize the Montgomery bus boycott in 1955 during the civil rights era. The church is located steps away from the Alabama State Capitol. On January 1, 2008, the US Government submitted the church to UNESCO as part of an envisaged future World Heritage Site nomination, because of this important history. It is on the UNESCO "Tentative List of World Heritage Sites".
