Suhrawardy Udyan

The 7 March Speech of Bangabandhu was a historic speech given by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the Founding Father of Bangladesh on 7 March 1971 at the Ramna Race Course (now Suhrawardy Udyan) made in Dhaka to a gathering of over 20 lakh (2,000,000) people. It was delivered during a period of escalating tensions between East Pakistan and the powerful political and military establishment of West Pakistan. In the speech, Bangabandhu informally declared independence of Bangladesh, proclaiming: "The struggle this time, is a struggle for our liberty. The struggle this time, is a struggle for our independence." He announced a civil disobedience movement in the province, calling for "every house to turn into a fortress". The speech inspired the Bengali people to prepare for a war of independence amid widespread reports of armed mobilisation by West Pakistan. The Bangladesh Liberation War began 18 days later when the Pakistan Army initiated Operation Searchlight against Bengali civilians, intelligentsia, students, politicians, and armed personnel. On 30 October 2017, UNESCO added the speech to the Memory of the World Register as a documentary heritage.

On 3 May 2025, Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh held a grand rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka, Bangladesh. This event was one of their biggest public shows of strength and marked the second-largest gathering in Dhaka since the 2013 Long March and Siege of Dhaka, which culminated in the Shapla Square massacre. The central themes of the rally included demands for justice regarding the 2013 events, the withdrawal of criminal cases filed against its leadership during Sheikh Hasina's regime, and the dissolution of the Women's Affairs Reform Commission—an initiative introduced by the Yunus interim government following the July Revolution. The group also called for constitutional amendments to reaffirm full trust and faith in Allah while rejecting pluralism, and it criticized the treatment of Muslim populations in India and Palestine. Chaired by Muhibbullah Babunagari, the rally concluded with a 12-point declaration and the announcement of a nationwide protest scheduled for 23 May, along with divisional programs to follow.

The Museum of Independence in Dhaka, Bangladesh depicts the struggle for independence of Bangladesh. It shows the history of the nation since Mughal tenure to independence in 1971. It is the first and only underground museum in the country. The museum is part of a 67-acre complex at Suhrawardy Udyan, the site from where Sheikh Mujibur Rahman gave his historic speech declaring the struggle for independence, and where the Pakistani forces surrendered after the War of Liberation. The museum was opened to public on March 25, 2015, the 45th Independence Day of Bangladesh.

Kakrail (Bengali: কাকরাইল) is a neighbourhood in Dhaka. It is under Ramna Thana and falls under the jurisdiction of Dhaka South City Corporation. Over time, Kakrail has grown into a mostly residential area, with apartment plots and schools, but subsequently, several NGOs and government offices have been set up there.

Dhaka University (Bengali: ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়, romanised: Dhaka Bisshobiddaloy), also sometimes unofficially and colloquially referred as TSC station, is an elevated metro station on MRT Line 6 of the Dhaka Metro Rail. This station is in the University of Dhaka campus, next to the Teacher-Student Centre and close to the Curzon Hall , located in Shahbagh Thana. The station commenced service on 13 December 2023.

Greeks were the last among European merchants to come to Bangladesh. They came to Bangladesh around the 18th century. They constructed a memorial in Dhaka. It was constructed for the memory of the Greek merchants who died while in Dhaka. The Greek memorial was built around AD 1900, and appears like an ancient Greek temple; it is a small yellow structure on land owned by the Greek Community, which flourished in Dhaka in the 19th century. It is inside the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) of the University of Dhaka and stands alone on the main Shahbagh Avenue and faces Ramna Race Course. To its southern side is the Atomic Research Centre and to its north a student's centre. It is considered to be the only such structure extant outside Greece.

The Ramna Kali Mandir (Bengali: রমনা কালী মন্দির) is a temple in Dhaka that was originally built in the time of the Mughal Empire. It was also known as the "Ramna Kalibari". The temple is dedicated to the Hindu Goddess Kali. It is beside the former Dhaka Racecourse, now Suhrawardy Udyan. The entire temple complex occupies almost 2.25 acres (9,100 m2) and is on the south side of Ramna Park, opposite the Bangla Academy. The original temple was destroyed on March 27, 1971 by the Pakistani Army during the Bangladesh Liberation War. It was the site of a massacre of mostly Hindu people.

Anti Terrorism Raju Memorial Sculpture (Bengali: সন্ত্রাস বিরোধী স্মারক রাজু ভাস্কর্য Shontrash Birodhi Raju Sharokh Bhaskarjya) is a sculpture located in University of Dhaka campus of Bangladesh. It was created by Shaymol Chowdhury and considered one of the best sculptures in Bangladesh. It is dedicated to the memory of a student of Dhaka University named Moin Hossain Raju an activist of Bangladesh Students' Union who was killed while protesting against Terrorism. It was built in the late 1990s.

Teacher-Student Centre of the University of Dhaka is a building on the Dhaka University campus in Shahbagh, Dhaka, Bangladesh. The centre was established in 1961 by the Dhaka University by the Division of Public Affairs.

The Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh, commonly referred to as IEB, is the national professional organisation of engineers in Bangladesh. It is registered under the Societies Registration Act (1860) of the country. Within the country, it has 18 centers and 31 sub-centers. It has 10 'overseas chapter' in different countries of the world, namely: Australia, Kuwait, Malaysia, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Thailand, United Arab Emirates and the United States. It formed the Board of Accreditation for Engineering and Technical Education (BAETE) which holds the accreditation of engineering faculties in Bangladesh.

Shishu Park (Bengali: শিশু পার্ক), Alternatively known as Shahid Zia Shishu Park (Bengali: শহীদ জিয়া শিশু পার্ক), is the only public sector children's amusement park loacated in Shahbag, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Established in 1979 on 15 acres (6.1 ha) of land, it is the first children's amusement park in Bangladesh. Established as a profit making venture by Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation, the government-owned tourism promotion agency in Bangladesh, it is maintained by then Dhaka City Corporation and now Dhaka South City Corporation as its only entertainment park since 1983.The 12 rides of the park include including a wheel train, a merry-go-round and a number of wheel-based rides. Bangladesh Air Force donated a fighter jet in 1992. The cheapest of all entertainment parks in Dhaka, charging BDT 10.00 for entry and 10.00 for each ride, it draws about 6,000 visitors a day. During the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays the number of visitors reach up to 350 thousands. The City Corporation earns about BDT 200 million annually from the park. The park is open Monday through Thursday and Saturday from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm. On Fridays, it is open from 2:30 pm to 7:30 pm.Due to lack of maintenance the rides have deteriorated in condition. As of 2007, a City Corporation plan to revamp the park for BDT 9 billion waits for approval of the Ministry for Local Government and Rural Development. The plan includes an expansion of the area to 19 acres (7.7 ha) and adding 16 new rides besides reinstalling the old rides. Now it is closed for modernisation and renovation works.

The Eternal Flame also known as Shikha Chironton (Bengali: শিখা চিরন্তন) is a historical landmarks of Bangladesh. The flame was created to keep alive the memory of the martyrs who lost their lives in the Liberation War of Bangladesh and the defeat of the Pakistani Forces. It was jointly opened on March 26, 1997, on the occasion of Bangladesh independence day by then Prime minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina, the President of South Africa Nelson Mandela, the President of Palestine Yasir Arafat and the President of Turkiye Süleyman Demirel.
