Hempstead, New York

Hempstead is a village located in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County, on Long Island, in New York, United States. The population was 59,169 at the 2020 census, making it the most populous village in New York.The Incorporated Village of Hempstead is the site of the seventeenth-century "town spot" from which English and Dutch settlers developed the Town of Hempstead, the Town of North Hempstead, and ultimately Nassau County. It is the largest community by population in both the Town of Hempstead and Nassau County. Hofstra University is partially located in Hempstead.

St. George's Episcopal Church is an historic Episcopal church located at 319 Front Street (NY 102) in Hempstead, New York. It was constructed in 1822 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 as St. George's Church.The Rectory of St. George's Episcopal Church is an historic rectory located at 217 Peninsula Boulevard in Hempstead. It was listed on the National Register, in 1988.

The "Joysetta and Julius Pearse African American Museum of Nassau County" was renamed on 18 May 2021 for its long-time Directors. African American Museum also known as the African American Museum of Nassau County, which opened in 1970, is dedicated to showcasing local and national African American artists. The 6,000 sq. ft. facility is operated by the Museum Services Division of the Nassau County Department of Recreation, Parks and Support Services, the museum is located at 110 North Franklin Street in Hempstead, New York and is one of a number of cultural organizations in the region where visitors can learn about the role of African Americans in Long Island's history. The museum, one of the only African American museums in New York City, hosts a number of events including Black History Month and Kwanzaa celebrations and commemorations of the lives of important figures including Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X among others. In an effort to increase visitation, Nassau County decided in 2005 to eliminate admission fees.One of the museum's founders was Dr. Leroy Ramsey, a former military historian for the Department of Defense. and the museum's Director for the first twenty years was Willie Houston. In addition to the large number of school groups that the museum receives, the museum is also the location of and is managed by the African Atlantic Genealogy Society, which provides workshops and research assistance into family genealogy. In 2005 the museum was one of the first ten recipients of the Museum Preservation Award, granted by American Legacy magazine.The museum also acts as a community center that promotes African American culture through education, art, and other programs that would help enlighten the public. The museum holds Long Island prominent in most exhibits as a representation of the region. Further more, the museum also curates genealogical consultations through a program called " Digging for Roots at the African American Museum."

The Rosa Parks Hempstead Transit Center is an intermodal center and transportation hub in Hempstead, New York. It contains the Nassau Inter-County Express bus system's indoor customer facility between Jackson and West Columbia Streets – as well as the terminus for the Hempstead Branch of the Long Island Rail Road, located right across West Columbia Street from the bus terminal. Serving 19 routes, the bus terminal is a major transfer point for customers using a second Nassau Inter-County Express route or the LIRR. It offers a waiting area, transit information, MetroCard vending machines, a newsstand, and restrooms.As of 2015, the LIRR schedules 28 departures and 28 arrivals here on weekdays.

US Post Office-Hempstead is a historic post office building located at Hempstead, Nassau County, New York, United States. It was built in 1932 and designed by consulting architects Tooker & Marsh for the Office of the Supervising Architect. It is a two-story, symmetrically massed building faced with tan, brown, and red brick in the Classical Revival style. The central entrance features flanking octagonal aluminum Art Deco style lamps and other Art Deco ornamental detail. The lobby features 1936 murals by Peppino Mangravite installed in 1937.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

It is the Hempstead Union Free School District's only high school.As of the 2014–15 school year, the school had an enrollment of 2,226 students and 116.0 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 19.2:1. There were 1,346 students (60.5% of enrollment) eligible for free lunch and 34 (1.5% of students) eligible for reduced-cost lunch.

Sacred Heart Academy is an all-girls preparatory school located on Cathedral Avenue, in Hempstead, New York, United States. It is private and Catholic. Located within the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre, it is run by the Sisters of Saint Joseph. Sacred Heart Academy is a single-sex school for girls, grades 9 to 12. The official school colors of Sacred Heart are red and gold.

The Lawrence Herbert School of Communication is the communications school at Hofstra University. It has 11 distinct degrees ranging from Journalism and Public Relations to Filmmaking and Radio Production. The school was named for alumnus Lawrence Herbert in 2013, for his career accomplishments including the invention of the Pantone system. The current dean is Mark Lukasiewicz, who was a former news executive for both ABC News and NBC News. 1,108 students are enrolled as of Fall 2016.The school is home to numerous programs, including WRHU, the school's radio station which has won numerous accolades, most notably four Marconi Radio Awards for College Station of the Year. The network has also been the radio home of the New York Islanders since the 2010–2011 season. Other notable programs include the HEAT Network, and the Hofstra Chronicle among others.

The Hofstra University Arboretum (240 acres (97 ha)) is an arboretum located across the Hofstra University campus, in Hempstead, New York. Hofstra's campus is a member of the American Public Gardens Association, and is one of 430 arboreta in the United States.The Hofstra campus contains more than 12,000 evergreen and deciduous trees, representing 625 species and varieties of woody plants. The arboretum includes both native and exotic trees. A bird sanctuary has also been developed on two acres of land, serving as an educational prototype for the state of New York.

The Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University (commonly known as Hofstra Law) is a law school located in Hempstead, New York on Long Island, affiliated with Hofstra University. Founded in 1970 and accredited by the ABA in 1971, the school offers a JD, a joint JD/MBA degree, and LL.M degrees in American Law (for foreign law graduates) and Family law. It also offers online LL.M and MA degrees in Health Law & Policy, an online LL.M in American Law, and an online M.A. in American Legal Studies. The Law School is on the southern portion of the 244-acre (0.99 km2) Hofstra University campus. The school was renamed to the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University in September 2011.

Hofstra originated in 1935 as an extension of New York University under the name Nassau College – Hofstra Memorial of New York University. It became independent Hofstra College in 1939 and gained university status in 1963.
