WYRD-FM (98.9 MHz, "News Talk 98.9 WORD") is a news/talk station licensed to Spartanburg, South Carolina, and covering the Upstate region, including Greenville as well as part of North Carolina. It is owned by Audacy, Inc., with studios on Garlington Road in Greenville. WYRD-FM has an effective radiated power (ERP) of 100,000 watts, the maximum for most FM stations. The transmitter is on Hogback Mountain Road in Landrum. WYRD-FM carries three local programs on weekdays: The Tara Show with Tara Servatius airs in morning drive time. Straight Talk with Bill Frady is heard in late mornings and The Charlie James Show airs in late afternoons. Syndicated talk programs include The Mike Gallagher Show, The Mark Levin Show, Ground Zero with Clyde Lewis, Coast to Coast AM with George Noory and America in the Morning. Most hours begin with an update from Fox News Radio.

Tryon is a town in Polk County, on the southwestern border of North Carolina, United States. As of the 2020 census, the city population was 1,562. Located in the escarpment of the Blue Ridge Mountains, today the area is affluent and a center for outdoor pursuits, equestrian activity, and fine arts. Tryon Peak and the Town of Tryon are named for William Tryon, Governor of North Carolina from 1765 to 1771. He was honored for his negotiation with the Cherokee for a treaty during a period of conflict following the French and Indian War.

Tryon Country Club is a historic country club located near Tryon, Polk County, North Carolina. The nine-hole golf course was originally laid out in 1914; the course opened in 1917. The donor family attests that the layout was designed by noted golfer Donald Ross. The clubhouse was built in 1922, and is a one-story, five-bay, Rustic Revival style log building with two projecting front-gable porches. The pro shop and storage building was built about 1935, and is a one-story side-gable frame structure, with additions made about 1940, 1958, and 1972. Also on the golf course is a contributing one-story frame building known as the Summer House and added in 1958. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.

Pearson's Falls is located in the foothills of western North Carolina off Hwy. 176 between Tryon and Saluda. This wildlife and bird sanctuary comprises 268 acres (108 ha) of native forest, granite, spring-fed streams and a moderate 1/4 mile trail to a 90-foot (27 m) waterfall. There are over 200 species of rare wildflowers and plants. There are also mosses, lichens, shrubs and trees in this glen, which is classified as a deciduous climax forest. Pearson's Falls is owned and maintained by The Tryon Garden Club, a non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization. Pearson's Falls was named for a young engineer, Charles William Pearson, who scouted the mountains for what was to become the Southern Railroad. A military man, farmer, and an engineer, Captain Pearson bought the Glen as part of a large tract of land that he wanted for his family. In 1931, the Tryon Garden Club bought the property in order to preserve this unique mountain Glen. Although open to the public, the property remains under the ownership and protection of the Tryon Garden Club. Over 17,000 people visit Pearson's Falls each year. Pearson's Falls is a wildflower and wildlife preserve and an outdoor laboratory for botany and biology students from the surrounding colleges and universities, and the site of frequent field trips for local science classes. Pearson's Falls is designated as a North Carolina National Heritage Site of the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area, a North Carolina Birding Trail Site, and is placed in the Smithsonian Institution Archives of American Gardens. The botanical preserve is made up of spring-fed streams and 268 acres (108 ha) of native forest. In addition, the wildlife preserve features more than 200 species of fern, algae, flowering plants, and mosses. The waterfall's water source is Colt Creek, and the trail leading up to the waterfall is roughly three-tenths of a mile. Using a scale of 0–10, with 0 being easy and 10 being very difficult, the difficulty of the trail is listed as a 3. The waterfall is not wheelchair accessible. The waterfall is not dog friendly. Only service animals are allowed.

Friendly Hills, also known as Margaret Culkin Banning House, is a historic estate located near Tryon, Polk County, North Carolina. The house was built in 1924, and is a large, two-story, Tudor Revival style dwelling with stuccoed exterior walls decorated with hewn, half timbering. Also on the property are the contributing swimming pool (c. 1920s-1930s), log cabin used as a writing retreat by author Margaret Culkin Banning (1891–1982) (c. 1920s-1930s), and fish pool (1920s). Ms. Banning purchased Friendly Hills in 1936 and enjoyed the property seasonally for the remainder of her life. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.

Seven Hearths is a historic plantation house located near Tryon, Polk County, North Carolina. It was built about 1800 for Marvel (Marville) Mills - assumed built by his father Major William Mills, and is a two-story, five-bay, Federal style frame dwelling. It has exterior gable end double shouldered chimneys and flanking one bay wide, one bay deep projections. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

Mills-Screven Plantation, also known as Hilltop, is a historic plantation house located near Tryon, Polk County, North Carolina. The main house was built about 1820 and later expanded into the 1840s, and is a long two-story, seven-bay, Federal / Greek Revival style frame dwelling. It features a two-tier, three-bay, pedimented Ionic order portico. Also on the property are the contributing stone springhouse, guesthouse part of which is said to have been a slave cabin, double pen log crib, and a larger 20th century frame barn. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The original owners were slaveholders ohn McIntire and Govan Mills (1805–1862).

Mill Farm Inn is a historic country inn located near Tryon, Polk County, North Carolina. The inn was built between 1937 and 1939, and is a two-story, six bay by four bay, Colonial Revival style stone building. It is constructed of local blue granite. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.

Lynncote is a historic estate located near Tryon, North Carolina. It was designed by architect Erle G. Stillwell and built in 1927–1928. It is a two-story, eight-bay, Tudor Revival style stone dwelling built on the foundation of a previous dwelling built in 1895 and burned in 1916. It features an off-center entrance pavilion, leaded-glass casement windows, and half-timbering. Other contributing resources are the estate landscape, workshop (c. 1910, c. 1928), and Lynncote Lodge (1925-1926), designed by Harold Perry Erskine. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.

Railway Clerks' Mountain House, also known as the Mountain Home, Clerks' Mountain Home, and Orchard Inn, is a historic country inn located near Saluda, Polk County, North Carolina. The inn ("home") was built in 1926, and is a two-story, six-bay, frame building with Colonial Revival and American Craftsman style design influences. It has a hipped roof and features a full-width hip-roofed one-story porch supported by slender Tuscan order columns. Also on the property are three contributing guest cottages built about 1926: the "Paulownia" Cottage, "Boxwood" Cottage, and "Twin Poplar" Cottage. The property was originally developed by the Brotherhood of Railway Clerks of the Southern Railway System as a summer retreat. The union retained the property until 1962. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.

Saluda Grade was the steepest standard-gauge mainline railway grade in the United States. Owned by the Norfolk Southern Railway as part of its W Line, Saluda Grade in Polk County, North Carolina, gained 606 feet (185 m) in elevation in fewer than three miles (4.8 km) between Melrose and Saluda, North Carolina. Average grade was 4.24 percent for 2.6 miles (4.2 km) and maximum was 4.9% for about 300 feet (91 m). In late 2001, Norfolk Southern took the line containing the grade out of service for economic reasons. In a contract signed August 5, 2024, Saluda Grade was sold to the Saluda Grade Trail Conservancy, with plans to convert to a rail trail.

Lynn is an unincorporated community in Polk County, North Carolina, United States. Lynn is located on North Carolina Highway 108 2.7 miles (4.3 km) southwest of Columbus. Lynn has a post office with ZIP code 28750. Its incorporation was repealed in 1965.
