Enfield, New Hampshire

Enfield is a census-designated place (CDP) and the main village in the town of Enfield in Grafton County, New Hampshire, United States. The population of the CDP was 1,571 at the 2020 census, out of 4,465 in the entire town.

The Hewitt House is a historic house on United States Route 4 in Enfield, New Hampshire. Built in 1871, it is a particularly fine example of late Italianate architecture, built for the manager of local woolen mills. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985, and included in the Enfield Village Historic District in 2010.

Mascoma Lake is a 1,158-acre (469 ha) lake in western New Hampshire, United States. Most of the lake is within the town of Enfield, while a small portion is within the city of Lebanon, where it drains into the Mascoma River, a tributary of the Connecticut River. The lake's general trend is from southeast to northwest, with the outlet at the northwestern end. The Mascoma River enters the lake near its halfway point, from the northeastern side, at the town center of Enfield. The southeastern end of the lake is fed by the Knox River. The lake's average depth is 30 feet (9.1 m) with a maximum depth of 68 feet (21 m).The lake freezes during winter and is stable enough to be walked upon. Ice fishing is popular on the lake. The lake is stocked with trout by the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department. Mascoma Lake often has a spring cyanobacteria bloom. Recent studies suggest that significant exposure to high levels of cyanobacteria producing toxins such as BMAA can cause amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). People living within half a mile of cyanobacterially contaminated lakes have had a 2.3 times greater risk of developing ALS than the rest of the population; people around Lake Mascoma had an up to 25 times greater risk of ALS than the expected incidence.In June 2009 the State of New Hampshire discouraged people from recreation in some areas of the lake because of the bloom. Aside from the bloom, the lake is generally considered safe for swimming, and the town of Enfield maintains a public beach with a lifeguard on the lake. NASA and its partners have used the frozen lake to test a robotic rover as a simulation of Antarctica.Mascoma Lake is home to the Dartmouth College sailing team. A community sailing club called the Mascoma Sailing Club also uses the lake.

The Enfield Shaker Museum is an outdoor history museum and historic district in Enfield, New Hampshire, in the United States. It is dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of the Shakers, a Protestant religious denomination, who lived on the site from 1793 to 1923. The museum features exhibitions, artifacts, eight Shaker buildings and restored Shaker gardens. It is located in a valley between Mount Assurance and Mascoma Lake in Enfield.One of the buildings, the Great Stone Dwelling, was the largest residential building north of Boston and is the largest Shaker building. When the Shaker community closed, most of the land that made up the Enfield Shaker Village was sold to the Missionaries of La Salette. The state owns 28 acres (11 ha) and 13 buildings, which is now the Enfield Shaker Museum.

The Knox River is a 2.5-mile-long (4.0 km) river in western New Hampshire in the United States. The river is an inlet of Mascoma Lake, which drains by the Mascoma River to the Connecticut River and ultimately Long Island Sound. The Knox River lies entirely in the town of Enfield. It begins at the village of Fish Market as the outlet of George Pond and flows northwest through Enfield Center to the southeastern end of Mascoma Lake. The river is paralleled for its entire length by New Hampshire Route 4A.

Montcalm is an unincorporated community in the town of Enfield in Grafton County, New Hampshire, United States. It is located along a portion of old New Hampshire Route 10 that remains after most of the road was replaced by Interstate 89. The stretch of old road is only accessible from Exit 15 on I-89; in both directions from the exit the old road reaches a dead end. (Present-day Route 10 follows Interstate 89 in a concurrency through this area.) The elevation is 1,211 feet (369 m) above sea level.The name "Montcalm" was chosen by Enfield's selectmen in 1960 when the construction of I-89 was in the planning stages, to replace the name "South Notch" that had been proposed by state highway engineers. Montcalm had once been the name of a settlement in the area which had had its own post office and school.

Whaleback is a ski area located in Enfield, New Hampshire, United States. In 2013, after several bankruptcies over previous decades, it was bought by operated by a non-profit organization called the Upper Valley Snow Sports Foundation.

The Enfield Center Town House is an historic former town hall on New Hampshire Route 4A in Enfield Center, New Hampshire. Constructed in 1845–46, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 2017.The building was moved and expanded in 1859, and was renovated in 1909; it was last used as a town hall in 1913. It is diagonally across the street from the Centre Village Meeting House, which is also NRHP-listed.

The Centre Village Meeting House (also known as Union Church of Enfield Center) is a historic meeting house (church) on New Hampshire Route 4A in Enfield Center, New Hampshire. Built in 1836, it is a well-preserved late example of Federal period church architecture, albeit with some Greek Revival stylistic elements. Then as now, it serves as a nondenominational building, serving a variety of small Christian congregations. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

Enfield Center is an unincorporated community in the town of Enfield in Grafton County, New Hampshire. It is a separate community from the much larger village of Enfield, which is located in the northern corner of the town. Enfield Center is located, as the name suggests, near the geographic center of the town of Enfield. It lies along New Hampshire Route 4A, about 1 mile (1.6 km) south of the south end of Mascoma Lake and about 3 miles (5 km) south of Enfield village. The Knox River flows north through the village on its way from George Pond to Mascoma Lake. Enfield Center has a separate ZIP code (03749) from the rest of the town of Enfield. Two of its buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places; the Centre Village Meeting House (also known as the Union Church) and the Enfield Center Town House.

Crystal Lake is a 401-acre (1.6 km2) water body located in Grafton County in western New Hampshire, United States, in the town of Enfield. Crystal Lake is part of the Mascoma River watershed. The lake contains one small island: Oliver Island. The lake is classified as a cold- and warmwater fishery, with observed species including rainbow trout, smallmouth bass, chain pickerel, horned pout, black crappie, and rock bass.The lake is one of eight in New Hampshire which historically had a naturally occurring native lake trout population. These fish have since been extirpated from the lake.

Northeast Airlines Flight 946 was a domestic U.S. flight from Boston, Massachusetts, to Montpelier, Vermont, with a scheduled stop in Lebanon, New Hampshire, operated by Northeast Airlines. On October 25, 1968, some time during the evening, the Fairchild Hiller FH-227 aircraft crashed on Moose Mountain while descending on approach. The crash killed 32 of 42 passengers and crew. Of the fatalities, four were employees from the National Life Insurance Company who were returning from a business trip. The fatalities also included a reporter for the Barre Daily Times and six social workers of the Vermont Head Start Supplementary Training Program on a conference trip. Ten passengers survived the crash with minor or moderate injuries. After the crash, Northeast Airlines continued flight service until its merger with Delta Air Lines in the early 1970s.
