West-Oak High School

Retreat Rosenwald School, also known as the Retreat Colored School, is a historic Rosenwald School located at Westminster, Oconee County, South Carolina. It was built in 1924, and is a one-story, T-shaped, two-teacher community school. The building has three main rooms consisting of two classrooms and an industrial room in the forward-projecting wing. The school closed in 1950. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2011.

South Carolina Highway 11, the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway, runs through South Union, leading south 5 miles (8 km) to South Carolina Exit 1 on Interstate 85. To the north the highway provides access to Westminster, 9 miles (14 km) to the northwest, and Seneca, 14 miles (23 km) to the northeast. South Carolina Highway 182 runs through the east side of South Union, leading southeast 5 miles (8 km) to Fair Play and northeast 4 miles (6 km) to South Carolina Highway 24 at Oakway.

The population as of 2020 was 718.The CDP is in southern Oconee County, on the northeast shores of Lake Hartwell, a reservoir on the Tugaloo and Savannah rivers. It is bordered to the northeast by the community of South Union. The center of the reservoir is the Georgia state line. Chickasaw Point is 13 miles (21 km) southwest of Seneca and 11 miles (18 km) south of Westminster. It is 5 miles (8 km) northwest of South Carolina Exit 1 on Interstate 85.

The shooting of Zachary Hammond occurred on July 26, 2015, in Seneca, South Carolina. Hammond, age 19, was shot in his car during an undercover narcotics operation that targeted his passenger. Hammond, who was unarmed, was shot twice by 32-year-old police lieutenant Mark Tiller.Hammond's death was being investigated by the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the U.S. Attorney for South Carolina, and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED). SLED completed its investigation on August 31, turning its findings over to 10th Circuit Solicitor Chrissy Adams who, eight weeks later, declined to bring criminal charges against Tiller. On October 27, the dashcam video of the shooting was released.

The Faith Cabin Library at Seneca Junior College is a Faith Cabin Library built to serve the African American community in Seneca, South Carolina. It was built on the campus of the Seneca Junior College. The log cabin library building was named to the National Register of Historic Places on November 14, 2012.

The Keil Farm is a property listed on the National Register of Historic Places, located near South Carolina Highway 11 in the vicinity of Walhalla, South Carolina, in Oconee County. The property includes a c. 1850 farm house and six contributing outbuildings. The farm, built by John Henry Keil, Sr. (born Johann Heinreich Keil in Stotel, Germany) is seen as an important symbol of the role German immigrant families played in the development of the area.

Seneca was named for the nearby Cherokee town of Isunigu, which English colonists knew as "Seneca Town".
