ZDF (pronounced [ˌtsɛt.teːˈʔɛf] ), short for Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen (pronounced [ˈtsvaɪtəs ˈdɔʏtʃəs ˈfɛʁnzeːn] ; "Second German Television"), is a German public-service television broadcaster based in Mainz, Rhineland-Palatinate. Launched on 1 April 1963, it is run as an independent nonprofit institution, and was founded by all federal states of Germany (Bundesländer). ZDF is financed by television licence fees and advertising revenues.The broadcaster is well known for its famous programmes heute, a newscast established in 1963, and Wetten, dass..?, an entertainment show that premiered in 1981, with a suspension from 2014 to 2021. Norbert Himmler, ZDF's director general, was elected by the ZDF Television Council in 2021.

The Congregation of Divine Providence (Latin: Congregatio Divinae Providentiae; German: Schwestern von der Göttlichen Vorsehung) is a Catholic religious institute of women that was founded in 1851 in the Grand Duchy of Hesse by Wilhelm Emmanuel von Ketteler, Bishop of Mainz, together with Stephanie Fredericke Amalie de la Roche von Starkenfels (1812–1857), a French noblewoman. From May 2016 to June 2021 the stadium was known as Opel Arena ([ˈoːpl̩ ʔaˌʁeːnaː]) per a naming rights agreement with Opel.The stadium adopted its current name in July 2021 following a sponsorship agreement with the MEWA Textil-Service, a German linen rental company.

The University of Applied Sciences Mainz consists of three faculties: School of Technology, School of Design and School of Business. The common feature of all fields of study is the practical orientation of the university, the short periods of study and the internationally orientated courses. In 2009 the School of Business, the School of Engineering with the departments Geoinformatics and Surveying and the administration of the university moved to the new location "Campus". All other departments will move as well in the near future to the new location "Campus".

The Mainz Sand Dunes (German: Großer Sand) are a small geological and botanical supra-region and important nature preserve in Mainz, Germany. Within this protected area rare plants and animals can be found. Some of the species represented here, such as the Purple Golden-drop, (Onosma arenaria) grow only here and in small numbers. The sand dunes developed after the last ice age (Würm glaciation) and the first resettlement of grassland plants occurred approximately 12,000 years ago. The dry sandy soils are poor of nutrients but relict flora from the glaciation grasslands grow favorably. These plants are found otherwise only in southeast-European, inner-Asiatic (Pontic Steppe) areas and in the Mediterranean respectively. The effective surface of the protected landscape is rather small at 1.27 square kilometers. The Sand Dunes can be found between the suburbs Gonsenheim and Mombach and stretches up to the floodplains beginning in Mombach. Bordering the dunes is the Lennebergwald, with an area of 7 km² and therefore the biggest contiguous forest in Rheinhessen. The Lenneberg forest is also protected and shows to some extent the same flora and fauna.

The Institute of Molecular Biology (IMB) is a modern research centre on the campus of the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany. It is funded by the Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation and the state of Rheinland Palatinate. The scientists at IMB primarily conduct basic science in developmental biology, epigenetics, ageing, genome stability and related areas.

The Lennebergwald is a forest in the north of Rheinhessen in Rhineland-Palatinate in Germany. The approximately 700 ha sized stretches north-west of Mainz between the urban districts of Mombach, Gonsenheim, Finthen and the municipalities of Budenheim and Heidesheim am Rhein in the district of Mainz-Bingen. Most of the area belongs to Budenheim. Characteristic of the Lennebergwald is its dry and sandy soil, resulting in a high ground temperature during summer days. Due to this primarily pine and oak trees as well as dry and calcareous grassland are growing here like in the neighbouring Mainz Sand Dunes. The climate is temperate and semi-arid to semi-humid.Considering the aspect of ecology, the Lenneberg forest has a high importance as a recreation area for people performing general fitness training such as jogging, nordic walking, mountainbiking as well as for people strolling around the wooded area. Within the Lennebergwald some cultural heritage monuments of Budenheim, such as the old St.-Wendelinus-chapel, the Lennebergtower (a look-out in Gothic Revival architecture comprising a stair tower, 1878–1880 by Philipp Johann Berdellé), the new St.-Wendelinus-chapel (Gothic Revival limestone hall, 1862–1866) as well as the elevated water supply tanks of Budenheim (Art Nouveau rotunda, erected 1907, by architect Wilhelm Lenz) and Gonsenheim (Art Nouveau building, 1909, also by Wilhelm Lenz).
