South China Meeting House

South China is a village in the town of China in Kennebec County, Maine, United States. It is one of five villages in the town. Located between Augusta and Waterville, South China sits along the shores of its namesake, China Lake. It is an hour and a half from both Bangor and Portland. Maine State Route 3 runs through the major part of the town, leading west to Augusta and east to Belfast, and U.S. Route 202 (Lakeview Drive) connects South China with China.

The Abel Jones House is a historic house at 33 Jones Road in the village of South China, Maine. Built in 1815, it is a fine local example of Federal period architecture, which is most notable as the birthplace and childhood home of the important Quaker writer and historian Rufus Jones. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983; it is one of several properties in South China to be listed for their association with Jones.

Pendle Hill is a historic summer house between United States Route 202 and China Lake in South China, Maine. Built in 1916, it served as the summer home of Quaker theologian, historian, and writer Rufus Jones until his death in 1948. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

Threemile Pond is a lake located in Windsor and China, Maine. Despite the name, the pond is in fact 2.71 miles long. The lake has a boat ramp for aquatic activities . The lake has 4 small islands named Camp Island, Marsh Island, Shallow Island, and Overlook Island. South Vassalboro is located less than half a mile away from the lake. Three of the lake's Islands are private, and one is an undeveloped marsh.

China Lake is a lake in Kennebec County, Maine. Located northeast of the state capital of Augusta, China Lake is situated in the towns of China and Vassalboro. China Lake has two large basins connected by a narrow neck. The elongated eastern basin with an average depth of less than 30 feet (9.1 m) is entirely within the town of China, and has an irregular shoreline heavily developed with residences and seasonal cottages. The more nearly circular western basin extending into East Vassalboro is as deep as 85 feet (26 m), and shoreline development around the western basin has been discouraged to allow use as a water supply for Waterville and Winslow. The western basin overflows into Outlet Stream in the town of Vassalboro. Outlet Stream flows 7 miles (11 km) north to discharge into the Sebasticook River in Winslow 1 mile (1.6 km) upstream of the Kennebec River.Summer water temperatures in China Lake range from 72 °F (22 °C) near the surface to 48 °F (9 °C) in the deepest pools. Nutrient loading from shoreline development causes annual algal blooms with nocturnal depression of dissolved oxygen concentrations. These conditions have become unsuitable for historic populations of Atlantic salmon and lake trout. Introduced brown trout have adapted to lake conditions, and brook trout fishing has been sustained by stocking legal-size fish from surplus hatchery production. China Lake is also known locally for producing some of the most productive Largemouth Bass fishing in Maine, with several large tournaments held each summer. Other fish found in the lake include smallmouth bass, chain pickerel, white perch, yellow perch, sunfish, creek chub, white sucker, hornpout, and American eel. Public boat launch facilities are available at the north end of the eastern basin and in Vassalboro near the outlet of the western basin.

The Eli and Sybil Jones House is a historic house at Maine State Route 3 and Dirigo Road in South China, Maine. Built in 1833, this modest house was the home of Quaker missionaries Eli Jones and Sybil Jones, who gained international renown for their travels in Europe, the Middle East, and West Africa. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

The Philip Leach House is a historic house on Bog Road in East Vassalboro, Maine. Built about 1805, it is a well-preserved local example of a Federal style Cape house. It is notable for the stencilwork and floor painting in its parlor, which are the work of the itinerant folk art stenciler Moses Eaton Jr. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

The East Vassalboro Grist and Saw Mill is a historic mill complex in East Vassalboro, Maine. Established in the late 18th century, it is one of the oldest water-powered mills in the state, with a working complement of grist and lumber milling equipment. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

Vassalboro includes the villages of Riverside, Getchell's Corner, North Vassalboro, and East Vassalboro, home to the town library and sports field. Vassalboro is included in the Augusta, Maine, micropolitan New England City and Town Area.

Webber Pond is a man-made lake located in Vassalboro, Maine, United States. The water is lowered every October for weed control by the use of a dam; attached to the dam is a fish ladder. The town of Vassalboro maintains a boat launch for public access. The lake also has two islands; the smaller of the two is owned by the town and is open for camping, while the larger is owned privately. The lake is shallow and weedy, which makes it well suited for warm-water game fish. Fishing tournaments are held every year on the lake. Fish found in the lake are mostly smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, yellow perch, white perch, redbreast sunfish, pumpkinseed sunfish, crappie, and brown trout; later in the season the lake is also home to pickerel. Webber Pond has been known as an inferior lake because of algae blooms during hot summer months. This problem has been greatly diminished by the Lakes Association's letting thousands of alewives come in through the fish ladder to spawn. The alewives stay less than a week, and the young fish develop in the lake, eating much surplus algae.
