Bessemer City is a small suburban city in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population is 5,340 (as of the 2010 census). The city is approximately 6 miles (10 km) northwest of Gastonia and 25 miles (40 km) west of Charlotte. It was settled in 1756 and founded in 1893.

The Bessemer City Downtown Historic District is a national historic district in Bessemer City, Gaston County, North Carolina. It encompasses 23 contributing buildings and 10 contributing structures in Bessemer City's central business district. The buildings were built between after 1896, and include one- and two-story commercial buildings and two large, sprawling textile mill complexes. Notable buildings include: Whetstone Cotton Mills-Huss Manufacturing Company-Algodon Manufacturing Division of Pyramid Mills (1903, 1909, c. 1960) Southern Cotton Mills-Osage Manufacturing Company (1895, 1896, c. 1905, c. 1935, c. 1960) Gamble Hardware (c. 1945) Central Drug Store (1927, 1960s) Winn-Dixie Grocery (c. 1926) Shulman's Department Store (c. 1920; c. 1940; c. 1960) Kincaid Service Station and Pontiac Dealership (1932, c. 1937, c. 1960).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014.

Central School, also known as Bessemer City Elementary School, is a historic school complex located at Bessemer City, Gaston County, North Carolina. The main school building was built about 1929, and is a two-story, "U"-plan brick building with Collegiate Gothic detailing. It was rebuilt following a fire in 1942. Adjacent to the school is the Rustic Revival style, rough cut stone gymnasium built in 1933 with funds provided by the Works Progress Administration. Other contributing buildings are the Home Economics Building (c. 1938-1939), Classroom Building (c. 1953), and Storage Shed (c. 1953).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.

Crowders Mountain Township is a township in southwestern Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. At the 2010 census, it had a population of 15,821.The township contains the city of Bessemer City, a western portion of the city of Gastonia, and an eastern portion of the city of Kings Mountain. The township takes its name from Crowder's Mountain, a 1,625-foot-high (495 m) ridge in the western part of the township and home to Crowders Mountain State Park.

WBAV-FM (101.9 MHz, "V 101.9") is an urban adult contemporary radio station serving the Charlotte metropolitan area (Metrolina). Owned by Beasley Broadcast Group, WBAV's studios and offices are on South Boulevard in Charlotte's South End. In morning drive time, it carries the syndicated Steve Harvey Morning Show. WBAV-FM has an effective radiated power (ERP) of 100,000 watts, the maximum for most American FM stations. The transmitter is on Crowder's Mountain, along McSwain Groves Road in Gastonia (its city of license). The station broadcasts using HD Radio technology. It carries sports from Fox Sports Radio on its HD-2 subchannel It carries all-podcasts on its HD-3 subchannel.

Crowders Mountain State Park is a 5,217-acre (21.11 km2) North Carolina state park in Gaston County, North Carolina in the United States. It is near Kings Mountain, North Carolina and on the outskirts of Gastonia, North Carolina, it includes the peaks of Crowder's Mountain and The Pinnacle. Crowders Mountain is named for Crowders Creek which originates near its base. The cliffs are a popular destination for rock climbers.

Crowders Mountain is one of two main peaks within Crowders Mountain State Park, the other peak being The Pinnacle. The park is located in the western Piedmont of North Carolina between the cities of Kings Mountain and Gastonia or about 25 miles (40 km) west of Charlotte. Crowders Mountain abruptly rises nearly 800 feet (240 m) above the surrounding terrain, and has an elevation of 1,625 feet (495 m) above sea level. The monadnock is named for Crowders Creek, which originates near its base. The original namesake of Crowders Creek is unknown, but mostly likely lived farther south along Crowders Creek. Crowders Mountain and The Pinnacle, located to the southwest, once served as markers to separate the hunting grounds of the Catawba and Cherokee peoples. In the early 1970s a mining company began doing exploratory sampling of areas along what is now the Backside Trail with the intent of purchasing the minerals rights to excavate the mountain for kyanite, barite, and iron. This led local concerned citizens, educational institutions, and local governments to join together and convince state government pursue the creation of a state park in order to protect the area. In 1973 the State of North Carolina created Crowders Mountain State Park. It opened to the public in 1974. Crowders Mountain proper was added to the new park in 1978. The Pinnacle was added in 1987. In the year 2000, 2000+ acres were purchased. This purchase brought the entire ridge line of Kings Mountain into the park and took park boundaries to the North Carolina/South Carolina state line. Both monadnocks present sheer rock cliffs which are 100–150 feet (30–46 m) in height. The cliffs of Crowders Mountain are popular among rock climbers. Rock climbing is no longer permitted on The Pinnacle. Hiking trails lead to both summits, from which it is possible to view the skyscrapers of nearby Charlotte, North Carolina, on a clear day.

Tryon County is a former county which was located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. It was formed in 1768 from the part of Mecklenburg County west of the Catawba River, although the legislative act that created it did not become effective until April 10, 1769. Due to inaccurate and delayed surveying, Tryon County encompassed a large area of northwestern South Carolina. It was named for William Tryon, governor of the North Carolina Colony from 1765 to 1771. The county seat, finally designated in 1774, was located eight miles southwest of the present-day community of Lincolnton, in Lincoln County.

Tryon is an unincorporated community in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. It is in Cherryville Township, located approximately 4.7 miles (7.6 km) southeast of the city of Cherryville on North Carolina Highway 274. The rural Gaston County election precinct centered on Tryon had a voting-age population of 1524 in the 2000 Census.The Tryon community is near the former location of the courthouse of the colonial-era Tryon County. The courthouse was the site of the signing of the Revolutionary-era Tryon Resolves, a declaration of resistance to actions of the British Empire against its American Colonies drawn up after the Battle of Lexington.Tryon Elementary School, grades K-5, is located in the Tryon community. Its attendance district covers most of eastern unincorporated Cherryville Township. Most of these students feed into John Chavis Middle School and Cherryville High School in Cherryville, while those living in areas southeast of the community attend Bessemer City Middle and High Schools.Industry in the area includes the Bessemer City Quarry of Martin Marietta Aggregates, a supplier of crushed aggregates for the construction industry, located just east of the community. Fire protection is provided by the Tryonota Volunteer Fire Department.

Central School Historic District is a national historic district located at Kings Mountain, Cleveland County, North Carolina. It encompasses 52 contributing buildings and 4 contributing structures in a residential section of Kings Mountain. The houses date between about 1870 and 1950, and include representative examples of the Second Empire and Queen Anne architectural styles. Notable nonresidential buildings are the Second Southern Railway Depot (1925), St. Matthew's Lutheran Church (1921, 1950), First Presbyterian Church (1936), and Central·High School (1933).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.

Jacob S. Mauney Memorial Library and Teacher's Home, also known as the Mauney Memorial Library and Dr. Jacob George Van Buren Hord House, is a historic home and library located at Kings Mountain, Cleveland County, North Carolina. It was built in 1923 as a private dwelling and donated to the city of Kings Mountain in 1947. From 1947 to about 1962–1963, the building also functioned as a teacherage for the Kings Mountain school system. It is a two-story, five-bay, yellow-brick Southern Colonial Revival-style house. The front facade features a two-story, pedimented tetrastyle portico with stucco-finished masonry columns. It has a one-story rear block added in 1987–1988 and the Harris Children's Wing, a two-level addition of 1999–2000.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014.

The Kings Mountain Historical Museum is a local history museum at 100 East Mountain in Kings Mountain, North Carolina. It is located in the former United States Post Office building, a handsome Colonial Revival structure built in 1940 with funding from a Depression-era works program. The building was used as a post office until 1986. The city acquired the building in 2000, and leased it to the local historical society, which has used it as a museum since.The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015.
