Fosbury

Fosbury Camp, is the site of an Iron Age bivallate hillfort located in Wiltshire. The site is oval in shape, and approximately 26 acres in area The site is a scheduled national monument number WI162. The fort sits atop Knolls Down and is excellently defended to the south, south west, and east, from the very steeply sloped topology. To the north the land is less steep, and is mostly bounded by Oakhill Wood. To the west the ground rises to the true summit of Haydown Hill. In the eastern side of the camp there lies a pond, perhaps an original feature of the neolithic site.

Fosbury House is a Grade II listed country house northwest of the village of Fosbury in Wiltshire, England, about 11 miles (18 km) southeast of Marlborough. The mansion was built about 1800, in limestone ashlar with a hipped tiled roof, and has three storeys. The three-bay front has a half-round Ionic portico and a pedimented gable. Lodges stand at the roadside entrances to the grounds: a two-storey building of c.1860 in flint and brick in the southwest, opposite the church; and a single-storey building in the northeast. The house was purchased in 1810 by Silvanus Bevan, then passed to his son David Bevan, then to his son Robert Cooper Lee Bevan, then to his son Francis Augustus Bevan, four generations of bankers. At some point between 1899 and 1903, it was sold to Alfred Henry Huth (1850–1910), the bibliophile, and it housed the Huth Library until its dispersal in a series of sales after his death. The house was recorded as Grade II listed in 1986, as was the brick and flint kitchen garden wall at the rear, which has piers with urn finials and cast-iron gates. The house, together with 300 acres, was bought in 1993 by Erskine Guinness, son of Bryan Guinness, the writer and part of the Guinness brewing family. In 2005, Robert Hesketh, son of Colonel Roger Fleetwood-Hesketh, Conservative MP for Southport, died from "a cocktail of alcohol, heroin and cocaine" at an 18th birthday party there.

Hippenscombe is a hamlet within the civil parish of Tidcombe and Fosbury, Wiltshire, in the southwest of England. Marked only on large-scale maps, it lies to the southwest of Oakhill Wood and the northwest of Conholt Park, about 8 miles (13 km) south of Hungerford, Berkshire. Hippenscombe has a long separate history of its own, having been an extra-parochial area. Much of the land was assigned in 1553 to Edward Seymour (1539–1621), later Earl of Hertford and the builder of Tottenham House in Savernake Forest, and was owned by his descendants until sold by Charles Brudenell-Bruce, 1st Marquess of Ailesbury in 1827. The area was severely affected by the Swing Riots of 1830. The population taken at 19th-century censuses was never more than 59, and by 1891 had declined to 35. Tidcombe and Fosbury is a civil parish in Wiltshire, England, about 10 miles (16 km) southeast of Marlborough and 7 miles (11 km) south of Hungerford, Berkshire. It includes the three small settlements of Fosbury, Tidcombe, and Hippenscombe and lies on the eastern edge of the county, where Wiltshire meets Hampshire. The Iron Age hill fort of Fosbury Camp is in the south of the parish. The population of the parish peaked around the time of the 1861 census, when 274 were recorded; by 2001 numbers had declined to 93. Rather than a parish council it has a parish meeting, with all electors entitled to attend and vote at meetings. Anciently the lands of Tidcombe and Fosbury were separated by a tongue of Shalbourne parish, which until 1895 was in Berkshire. Hippenscombe, formerly an extra-parochial area southwest of Fosbury, was added to the parish in 1894, and at the same time the modern name of the parish was adopted; it had previously been named Tidcombe. In 1934 almost all of the tongue – 501 acres, with a population of 20 in 1931 – was transferred to Tidcombe and Fosbury. The parish was part of the former district of Kennet until April 2009. Most significant local government functions are carried out by the Wiltshire Council unitary authority. At the parliamentary level, the parish is part of the Devizes county constituency.

Conholt was a small village in east Wiltshire, England, close to the Hampshire border and about 6 miles (10 km) northeast of Andover. It is now the site of the Conholt Park estate. There may have been a village here in the 13th century, but by the 16th there were only farmsteads. In the late 17th century a deer park was created. Since the 19th century the land has been part of Chute civil parish.The country house known as Conholt Park was built in the late 17th century and extended in the 18th and early 19th. The house is Grade II* listed and its 18th-century stable block and carriage house are Grade II listed. In 1992 the estate was acquired by a company belonging to the family of Paul van Vlissingen, an Anglo-Dutch businessman and philanthropist; it was his home from 1994 until his death in 2006. American billionaire Steve Schwarzman purchased the house, with 2,500 acres, in 2022 for an amount reported to be in excess of £80 million.

Bevisbury is the site of a former Iron Age plateau fort in Hampshire, England. The fort lies on a chalk ridge and is of a single bank and ditch construction, enclosing an area of 1.7 hectares (4.2 acres). The earthworks are now largely destroyed and overgrown, with the southern ramparts the best preserved. There are several pits that have been cut into and around the site which were probably quarries, and a private house lies within the north-east corner. The site was designated as a scheduled monument in 1951.The site lies to the east of the village of Chute, in Wiltshire, but itself lies just within the civil parish of Tangley in the county of Hampshire. The site is bisected by a Roman road, now Hungerford Lane, which travels broadly north-west to south-east, and runs between Winchester and Mildenhall (near Marlborough). Ham Hill is a hill and area of chalk downland in Wiltshire, England, on the steep banks running alongside the road from the village of Ham to Buttermere, close to the Berkshire border. A biological Site of Special Scientific Interest, notified in 1971, covers 1.5 hectares of the site; this designation is due to the site's species-rich plant and insect communities, which include some rare species. Notable among these is the musk orchid (Herminium monorchis), which has been confirmed at only one other site in Wiltshire. The site is managed as a nature reserve by Wiltshire Wildlife Trust. It is managed by grazing with sheep to prevent scrub encroachment and takeover by rank vegetation, which would otherwise crowd out the scarce plant species.

Buttermere is a small village and civil parish on the eastern boundary of Wiltshire, England, about 4.5 miles (7 km) south of Hungerford and 10 miles (16 km) southeast of Marlborough. The village stands above the steep escarpment of Ham Hill, and at 257 metres (843 ft) above sea level it is the highest village in Wiltshire and probably the highest in Wessex. The parish includes the hamlet of Henley, southwest of Buttermere village and next to the county border with Hampshire, and the western flanks of Inkpen Hill.

Tidcombe is a small village in Wiltshire, England, on the eastern edge of the county, near Hampshire, about 9 miles (14 km) southeast of Marlborough and 7 miles (11 km) southwest of Hungerford. With few inhabitants, it forms part of the civil parish of Tidcombe and Fosbury, which has a parish meeting.

Botley Down (grid reference SU292598) is a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Wiltshire, notified in 1989.

Little Down (or Littledown) is a village in Hampshire, England, on the North Downs near the county boundaries with Berkshire and Wiltshire. It lies just north of Vernham Street village, in Vernham Dean civil parish. Its nearest town is Andover, approximately 7.5 miles (12 km) south from the village.

Rushmore and Conholt Downs is a 111.5-hectare (276-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest north of Andover in Hampshire. It is a Nature Conservation Review site, Grade I.These chalk downs have areas of grassland and scrub. There is also woodland, which is dominated by oak and ash with hazel coppice. A stand of juniper trees is over a hundred years old, and it is thought to be the oldest on chalk in England, with some trees over 6 metres (20 feet) tall.
