Gouda (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɣʌudaː] (listen)) is a city and municipality in the west of the Netherlands, between Rotterdam and Utrecht, in the province of South Holland. Gouda has a population of 72,338 and is famous for its Gouda cheese, stroopwafels, many grachten, smoking pipes, and its 15th-century city hall. Its array of historic churches and other buildings makes it a very popular day trip destination. In the Middle Ages, a settlement was founded at the location of the current city by the Van der Goude family, who built a fortified castle alongside the banks of the Gouwe River, from which the family and the city took its name. The area, originally marshland, developed over the course of two centuries. By 1225, a canal was linked to the Gouwe and its estuary was transformed into a harbour. City rights were granted in 1272.

Gouda is a railway station in Gouda, Netherlands. The station opened on 21 May 1855 when the Nederlandsche Rhijnspoorweg-Maatschappij (Dutch Rijn Railway Company) opened the Utrecht–Rotterdam railway. The Gouda–Den Haag railway to The Hague was opened in 1870, and the connection to Alphen a/d Rijn in 1934. Trains running between Den Haag Centraal / Rotterdam Centraal and Utrecht Centraal call at the station, as well as the RijnGouweLijn connection to Alphen a/d Rijn. In November 1944, during World War II, the strategically located railway station was bombed by the Royal Air Force. The main building of the railway station was severely damaged; traces of the bombing are visible to this day on platforms 3 and 5. In 1948 a new building was constructed out of the remaining first floor of the old building. This was replaced by the current building in 1984.

The Gouwe is a channelized river in South Holland, the Netherlands. It runs in a north–south direction from the Oude Rijn to the Hollandse IJssel. From Alphen aan den Rijn, where the Gouwe begins at the Gouw Locks, it flows through Boskoop and Waddinxveen to Gouda. Here it splits into the old stream through the city and into the Gouwe Canal on the city's west side. The Gouwe was historically part of the primary (and prescribed) shipping route in Holland, connecting Dordrecht with Haarlem and later on Amsterdam. These cities, together with the Counts of Holland who collected toll at Gouda and Spaarndam, maintained this arrangement to the dissatisfaction of the cities Delft and Leiden which were bypassed by this route. Today the Gouwe is still an important shipping route. At the Oude Rijn, river travel can be continued north over the Aar Canal. It also functions as the main water outlet for the Rijnland region. Three striking vertical lift bridges cross the Gouwe at Alphen aan den Rijn, Boskoop, and Waddinxveen.

Platteweg is a hamlet in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is a part of the former municipality of Reeuwijk, and lies about 2.3 km east of Gouda. The statistical area "Platteweg", which also can include the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 180.

The Gouwestreek (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɣʌwəˌstreːk], a Dutch word meaning the "Gouwe area") is the area around Gouda in the province of South Holland in the Netherlands. "Gouwe" refers to the (now canalised) river Gouwe, which runs through Gouda. The Gouwestreek is not an official or precisely defined region, but generally speaking it includes the following municipalities: Bodegraven-Reeuwijk Boskoop Gouda Waddinxveen Zuidplas

Broek was a municipality in the Dutch province of South Holland, located west and north of Gouda. A longer name of the municipality, Broek, Bloemendaal, Broekhuizen, Thuil en het Weegje names the polders that are part of the municipality. Broek was a separate municipality between 1817 and 1870, when it became part of Waddinxveen. The polder "Broek" is now part of the municipality of Gouda, as is part of Bloemendaal. Around 1850, the municipality had a population of more than 1300, on an area of 17.55 km².,

Reeuwijk-Brug is a village in the municipality of Bodegraven-Reeuwijk in the province of South Holland, the Netherlands. Reeuwijk-Brug is a stretched out peat excavation village from the Middle Ages which was later developed from Reeuwijk-Dorp. The Dutch Reformed church is a neoclassic aisleless church from 1863 which was built as a replacement of the 16th century church. The former town hall with bell tower was built in 1918.

Gouderak is a village in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is located 4 km southwest of Gouda on the river Hollandsche IJssel, in the municipality of Krimpenerwaard. Gouderak was a separate municipality until 1985, when it merged with Lageweg (Ouderkerk) and Ouderkerk aan den IJssel to become part of Ouderkerk.

Beneden-Haastrecht is a town in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Krimpenerwaard, and lies about 3 km southeast of Gouda. The statistical area "Beneden-Haastrecht", which also can include the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 110.Until 2015, Beneden-Haastrecht was part of Vlist.
