The South End of Stamford, Connecticut is a neighborhood located at the southern end of the city, just south of the Downtown neighborhood. The South End is a peninsula bordered by Downtown Stamford and Interstate 95 to the north and almost totally by water on all other sides (Stamford Canal to the East and the Rippowam River to the West), with few streets linking it to other neighborhoods.Once a major industrial hub, home to the major lock manufacturing company Yale & Towne, the neighborhood has seen rapid redevelopment since the late 2000s. The 80-acre (32 ha) Harbor Point redevelopment, launched in 2008, saw a number of industrial sites redeveloped and repurposed as high-end residential, office, and commercial buildings. The redevelopment has attracted many young professionals to the South End, drawing remarks from many locals about the dramatic change in the neighborhood, as well as concerns about gentrification, overdevelopment, and affordability.It contains some industrial tracts, several old factory buildings, many small homes and apartment buildings, and a number of office buildings. Most of the neighborhood has been designated as the South End Historic District which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A high-risk flood zone, Stamford's South End is the location of the Stamford Hurricane Protection Barrier, operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The neighborhood spans an area of 0.56 square miles (1.5 km2), and has a population of 6,568 per a 2019 estimate.

Stamford station, officially known as the Stewart B. McKinney Transportation Center or the Stamford Transportation Center, is a major railroad station in the city of Stamford, Connecticut, serving passengers traveling on Metro-North Railroad's New Haven Line, Amtrak's Northeast Corridor, and CTrail's Shore Line East. In addition, it is also a major bus terminal for Greyhound, Peter Pan, and CTtransit buses. Annual ridership on Metro-North exceeded 8.4 million in 2016, making it the second busiest station in the entire system, after Grand Central Terminal.The split for the New Canaan Branch is just northeast of the station. A few Shore Line East trains terminate at Stamford during the morning rush hour, and originate there in the evening, though this service was suspended indefinitely on March 16, 2020, due to the coronavirus pandemic.United Airlines codeshares with Amtrak to provide service out of Stamford station to the train station at United's Northeast hub, Newark Liberty International Airport. As such, the train station has the IATA airport code (as an IATA-indexed train station) ZTF. Downtown Stamford is directly north of the station; the entrance to the station on the north side is marked by the Stamford Cone, a work of public sculpture situated at the top of Gateway Commons, while the South End is located directly south.

The Stamford Cone is a 14-metre-high (46 ft) stained glass pavilion, commissioned from the artist Brian Clarke as a site-specific artwork for the headquarters of UBS AG and landmark feature for the city of Stamford, Connecticut in the United States. Designed and fabricated over three years, it was completed in 1999 at a cost of over $1 million. The realisation of the design was executed jointly by Clarke, architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, and engineered by Goldreich Engineering and Dewhurst MacFarlane & Partners. The work was fabricated under Clarke's supervision in Munich, Germany, by the Mayer'sche Hofkunstanstalt. At the time of its completion, the artwork was the largest free-standing glass structure ever made.

The Rippowam River is a river in Fairfield County, Connecticut and Westchester County, New York (United States). It drains a watershed area of 37.5 square miles (97 km2) and flows for 17 miles (27 km) from Ridgefield to Long Island Sound, which it enters in Stamford's harbor.Streamflow in the Rippowam River is controlled by several small dams. The Turn-of-River Bridge, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, crosses it. The river has been dammed to form both the North Stamford Reservoir in North Stamford, and the Laurel Reservoir on the Stamford/New Canaan border. The lower eight miles of Rippowam River, from the North Stamford Reservoir to Harbor Point (Stamford), are known as "Mill River" according to the Trust for Public Land, although U.S. Geological Survey maps and documents based on them don't reflect this information. The upper part of the river, in Westchester County, is also called Mill River, as shown in USGS maps Variant names for the Rippowam River include Mill River, Collins Brook, Mud Pond Brook, Rippowan River, Scotts Corner Brook, Stamford Mill River, Stoneford Mill River, Tomok River, and Turn River, according to the US Board on Geographic Names.Architect Philip Johnson built his Glass House on the eastern slope of the Rippowam River valley in New Canaan in the late 1940s to take advantage of the view of the valley formed by the river.

St. Luke's Chapel is a historic building at 714 Pacific Street in Stamford, Connecticut. The chapel was built in 1891 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

The Stamford Main Post Office, also known as US Post Office–Stamford Main, is a historic post office building at 421 Atlantic Street in Stamford, Connecticut. The building, built in 1916 is prominent sited in downtown Stamford, being in view of the Connecticut Turnpike, and it is unusual for its Italianate style of architecture. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. The National Trust for Historic Preservation cited the site as one of ten historic sites saved in 2013.

The Basilica of Saint John the Evangelist is a Catholic parish church and minor basilica in Stamford, Connecticut, USA. It was founded in the 1850s and the current church was built in 1868 to meet the increasing needs of the congregation. It serves a multi-lingual congregation, including descendants of the original congregation.

Downtown Stamford, or Stamford Downtown, is the central business district of the city of Stamford, Connecticut, United States. It includes major retail establishments, a shopping mall, a university campus, the headquarters of major corporations and Fortune 500 companies, as well as other retail businesses, hotels, restaurants, offices, entertainment venues and high-rise apartment buildings. Since 2000, new development has consumed much of the Downtown area, with the additions of new high-rise buildings and office towers such as the 34-story Park Tower Stamford formerly Trump Parc Stamford, parks such as the new Mill River Park, and housing such as the new 17-story Highgrove Condominium Residences. Other development projects include new student housing at the UCONN Stamford branch, residential housing, and the planned Ritz-Carlton Stamford development, which will include two 39-story hotel/condominium towers. The city also plans to make improvements to the Atlantic Street underpass beneath the New Haven Line railroad tracks just east of the Stamford Transportation Center in order to alleviate a traffic bottleneck. The improvements are also meant to allow quicker evacuation of areas of the South End if disaster strikes. The project received a $245,000 earmark in the federal budget passed in December 2007.

The Old Town Hall is located in the Downtown section of Stamford, Connecticut. It is located at the southwest corner of Main and Atlantic Streets, occupying a portion of a triangular block bounded on the south by Bank Street. The rest of the block is occupied by the modern portion of Stamford's city hall. The building is an elegant Beaux Arts structure, designed by the New York City firm of Mellon and Jossely and built in 1905.In the 1960s, city officials began to leave it for larger buildings. In the 1980s it was said to be abandoned, and left so for approximately 20 years. In 2001, with the help of state grants, the city began a renovation. In recent years, it has been rented to businesses as an office space.The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 2, 1972.

Its metropolitan division is home to colleges and universities including UConn Stamford and Norwalk Community College.

The Main Street Bridge formerly carried Main Street over the Rippowam River (also known as Mill River) just outside downtown Stamford, Connecticut. It was designed and manufactured by the Berlin Iron Bridge Company in 1888. It is a two-span wrought iron lenticular truss bridge, each span 60 feet (18 m) long, although there are supporting piers every 12 feet (3.7 m) feet. The abutments and central pier are cut granite and other stone, faced in concrete.: 11 The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987, at which time it was the only lenticular truss bridge on a major artery in the state. The bridge is (as of 2014) only open to pedestrian traffic.
