Helford River

Mawnan (Cornish: Maunan, meaning St Maunan) is a village and civil parish in south Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It is in the former administrative district of Kerrier and is bounded to the south by the Helford River, to the east by the sea, and to the west by Constantine parish. The population was 1,454 in the 2001 census, rising slightly to 1,476 at the 2011 census. The church town of the parish is Mawnan Church, also known simply as Mawnan, and the only large village in the parish is Mawnan Smith, approximately three miles south of Falmouth.

Rock Island Bridge was a steam cargo ship built in 1919 by Submarine Boat Company of Newark for the United States Shipping Board (USSB) as part of the wartime shipbuilding program of the Emergency Fleet Corporation (EFC) to restore the nation's Merchant Marine. In March 1920 while on her maiden voyage the vessel collided with another steamer and subsequently had to be beached to avoid sinking. She was later abandoned and sold for scrap.

St Anthony-in-Meneage (Cornish: Lannentenin) is a coastal civil parish and village in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. The parish is in the Meneage district of the Lizard peninsula. In the 2001 census the parish had a population of 171, decreasing to 168 at the 2011 census.

The Gear Rout was a Cornish insurrection of 1648 following the end of the English Civil War. It involved some 500 Cornish rebels who fought on the Royalist side against the Parliamentarian forces of Sir Hardress Waller. Cornish forces had fought on the Royalist side in the defence of the Duchy against the New Model Army in the Civil War and had perceived it as a war of national liberation against the English Parliament, which the Cornish ultimately lost. After the English Civil War, taxes were increased to fund military installations but many in Cornwall rebelled against this and took to arms. Following the killing of 70 Cornish Royalists in Penzance on 16 May 1648, the people of Mullion sent 120 men, who marched to Goonhilly Downs and then to St Keverne and Mawgan, collecting 300 more foot soldiers and 40 horsemen. There was a battle against Parliamentarian forces under the control of Sir Hardress Waller which ultimately led to the defeat of the Cornish forces near Gear Camp, a nearby earthwork of the Celtic Iron Age that overlooked the Helford River.

Durgan (Cornish: Dowrgeun, meaning otters) is a hamlet in the parish of Mawnan, south Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It is beside the Helford River four miles (6 km) south of Falmouth. The hamlet consists of seventeen properties, many owned by the National Trust, and has a permanent population of just 10 (2017). The majority of the properties are second homes or holiday lets. Durgan has a beach popular with boaters, swimmers and holiday makers. Only vehicles belonging to residents or those staying in holiday lets are permitted in the village as the roads are narrow and parking is unavailable. Durgan is known for boating on the Helford River and the Fal estuary and hosts a regatta on the last Sunday in August each year. It was the home port of Captain George Vancouver. Glendurgan Garden, a National Trust property, is located in Durgan.

Gillan is a hamlet in the parish of St Anthony-in-Meneage, Cornwall, England. Gillan Creek is one of the creeks of the Helford River. Gillan lies within the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

Glendurgan Garden (Cornish: Glynn Dowrgeun, meaning deep valley of otters) is a National Trust garden situated above the hamlet of Durgan on the Helford River and near Mawnan Smith, in the civil parish of Mawnan, Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. Glendurgan Garden was laid out by Alfred Fox in the 1820s and 1830s. In 1962 Glendurgan Garden was given to the National Trust by Cuthbert and Philip Fox. The garden is notable for a cherry laurel maze, created in 1833.

Mawnan Smith (Cornish: Mownan an Gov) is a village in the civil parish of Mawnan in south Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It is situated approximately three miles south of Falmouth. In 2019 it had an estimated population of 1020.The parish church of St Mawnan and St Stephen is in Mawnan village (also known as Mawnan Church). A second church, St Michael's, was built in the village of Mawnan Smith in 1876 and there was also a Wesleyan Methodist chapel in the village. The village name may derive from the fact that it once had four working smithies serving the many farms in the parish. By the early 20th century only one remained in business. It was operated by blacksmith Billy James followed by his son Dryden and closed when the latter died in 1994. The Mawnan Anvil Trust has since restored the smithy as a working forge with a resident Artist Blacksmith and the site now also includes a Silversmith, Sign Writer and Carpenter.

Carlidnack (or Carlinack) is a hamlet in the parish of Mawnan, Cornwall, England. Carlidnack lies 2.7 miles (4.3 km) south-west of Falmouth on a road leading north-east from Mawnan Smith and at around 495 feet (151 m) above sea level.There is evidence of an ancient settlement at Carlidnack called a round that dates back to the late Iron Age or Roman period. This is a scheduled ancient monument that has been listed by English Heritage. The round is a circular area enclosed by a bank of earth and a ditch and with a single entrance; a round is usually a sign of an agricultural settlement. The round at Carlidnack has a bank that is 4 yards (3.7 m) high, a ditch that is 0.7 yards (0.64 m) deep and has a diameter of 140 yards (130 m); there are modern buildings on the site that date back to the early 20th century.

Trebah (Cornish: Tre Worabo, meaning Gorabo's farm) is a 26-acre (110,000 m2) sub-tropical garden situated in Cornwall, England, UK, near Glendurgan Garden and above the Helford River (grid reference SW767273). Part of the parish of Mawnan, the gardens are set within an area of the same name, which includes the small settlements of Trebah Wartha and Trebah Woolas (both are of medieval origin).

Carne is a hamlet in the civil parish of St Anthony-in-Meneage, Cornwall, England, UK. Carne lies on the south side of Gillan Creek at around 30 feet (9.1 m) above sea level. Gillan Creek is a part of the Lower Fal and Helford Intertidal Site of Special Scientific Interest. Carne lies within the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).
