Abermain, New South Wales

Neath is a village in New South Wales, Australia, west of Newcastle. There was originally a coal mine, built in 1906, but the mine closed in 1951 and passenger rail service to the village ended not long after. In 2021, the village recorded a population of 430, down from 490 in 2016.

The Werakata National Park is a protected national park that is located in the Lower Hunter Region of New South Wales, in eastern Australia. The 3,337-hectare (8,250-acre) national park is located to the north, east and south of the town of Cessnock (the park is separated into three distinct but closely located sections: near Abermain, near Kearsley and near Kitchener/Abernethy). The national park lies within the Hunter Valley Important Bird Area. South of the national park is the separate Werakata State Conservation Area.

Lovedale is a locality in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales. It is two hours from Sydney, 30 minutes from Newcastle, and is connected to the Hunter Expressway. The name is believed to be a combination of one of the early European families, the Loves, with the memories of the hills and dales of Yorkshire. At the 2016 census, it had a population of 485.

The Kurri Kurri aluminium smelter was located in Kurri Kurri, Australia and operated from 1969 until 2012. Developed by Alcan Australia Limited, the smelter experienced a change of ownership three times during its operations. Through gradual expansion, the smelter increased its production capacity from 30,000 tonnes per year (t/y) to 180,000 t/y of aluminium by the 1990s. The Kurri Kurri Smelter was engaged in operations in four areas; potlines for the melting of alumina, a cast house for casting of molten metal, a carbon plant for baking anodes, and anode plants for the manufacturing of carbon anodes. Environmental concerns were raised over the smelter's production and expansion, resulting in the establishment of emissions reduction technologies and ongoing environmental monitoring over the lifetime of the smelter. Challenging industrial relations have been documented throughout the smelter's operation, mainly during the 1990s and 2000s due to changing management and structure of the plant. The smelter's official closure in 2014 has since been followed by ongoing developments to remediate the land for its use for residential, industrial and conservation reasons. The land and some remaining power infrastructure from the smelter was sold in 2020 to developers. The smelter was part of the local culture and identity of Kurri Kurri and its closure resulted in the direct loss of hundreds of jobs and the indirect loss of thousands of jobs.

Aberdare is a suburb of Cessnock, a large town based on coal mining in the Lower Hunter Region, New South Wales, Australia. Aberdare is a small suburb just 15 minutes' from wine country, 45 minutes to Newcastle and two hours to Sydney. George Brown found coal in the area in 1800's. Coal mining created the land boom of 1903-23 and by 1926 Cessnock had a population of 12,000 within a one-mile radius

Kearsley is a village in the City of Cessnock, in the Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia. Kearsley is located 5.7 kilometres south-east of the town of Cessnock, NSW and is adjacent to Werakata National Park. The village was named after William Kearsley, a prominent member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly and official in the miner's union. At the heart of the town from its foundation in 1912 until closure in 1964 was J & A Brown & Abermain Seaham Collieries mine, the Abermain No.2 Colliery, the first mechanised pit in the Cessnock coalfield. Coal was shipped out via the South Maitland Railways.

Nulkaba is a locality in the city of Cessnock, in the Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia.

Hunter Valley Wildlife Park, formerly Hunter Valley Zoo, is a zoo in Nulkaba, New South Wales, Australia. It features a wide variety of Australian and exotic mammals, birds and reptiles. Founded in 2007 as the Hunter Valley Zoo, it went through ownership change in 2021 and in was rebranded as Hunter Valley Wildlife Park in November of that year.

Cessnock High School is a government-funded co-educational comprehensive secondary day school, located in Aberdare, in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales, Australia. The school provides the NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC) in Year 12. The school enrolled approximately 627 students in 2024, from Year 7 to Year 12, of whom 24 percent identified as Indigenous Australians and two percent were from a language background other than English. The school is operated by the NSW Department of Education; the relieving principal is Belinda Cooper. The school is part of the Cessnock Community of Great Public Schools, a local management group consisting of 15 schools designed to improve learning, engagement and wellbeing in the region.

Abernethy is a small town in the City of Cessnock, in the Hunter Region in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Abernethy is located 8 kilometres south-east of the town of Cessnock, NSW and is adjacent to Werakata National Park and the Aberdare State Forest. The town was founded near a coal mine and some of the historic buildings remain (including the Abernethy Hotel which now operates as a guest house). In 2016 348 lived there with the median age being 32 and 74.8% being born in Australia.

Cessnock City Hornets FC is a semi-professional soccer club based in Cessnock, New South Wales. The Hornets currently compete in the Northern NSW State League Division 1 with teams in First Grade, Reserve Grade, Under 18, Under 16, Under 15, Under 14 and Under 13 divisions. Northern NSW State League Division 1 is the 2nd tier of Football in Northern New South Wales Football below the National Premier Leagues Northern NSW.

Cessnock () is a city in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales, Australia, about 52 km (32 mi) by road west of Newcastle. It is the administrative centre of the City of Cessnock LGA and was named after an 1826 grant of land called Cessnock Estate, which was owned by John Campbell. The local area was once known as "The Coalfields", and it is the gateway city to the vineyards of the Hunter Valley, which includes Pokolbin, Mount View, Lovedale, Broke, Rothbury, and Branxton.
