Cessnock High School

Cessnock City Hornets FC is a semi-professional soccer club based in Cessnock, New South Wales. The Hornets currently compete in the Northern NSW State League Division 1 with teams in First Grade, Reserve Grade, Under 18, Under 16, Under 15, Under 14 and Under 13 divisions. Northern NSW State League Division 1 is the 2nd tier of Football in Northern New South Wales Football below the National Premier Leagues Northern NSW.

Kearsley is located 5.7 kilometres south-east of the town of Cessnock, NSW and is adjacent to Werakata National Park. The village was named after William Kearsley, a prominent member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly and official in the miner's union. At the heart of the town from its foundation in 1912 until closure in 1964 was J & A Brown & Abermain Seaham Collieries mine, the Abermain No.2 Colliery, the first mechanised pit in the Cessnock coalfield. Coal was shipped out via the South Maitland Railways.

Cessnock Correctional Centre, an Australian minimum and maximum security prison for males, is located in Cessnock, New South Wales. It was opened in 1972 under the name Cessnock Training Centre. The centre is operated by Corrective Services NSW. It detains sentenced and remand prisoners under New South Wales and/or Commonwealth legislation. Facilities were significantly updated during 2012, including the completion of Australia's first purpose-built maximum security sex offenders unit; built at a cost of $97 million.

Mount View High School is a government-funded co-educational comprehensive secondary day school, located in West Cessnock, in the Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia. Established in 1985, the school enrolled approximately 880 students in 2024, from Year 7 to Year 12, of whom 22 percent identified as Indigenous Australians and five percent were from a language background other than English. The school is operated by the NSW Department of Education; the principal is Shane Hookway.

The town was founded near a coal mine and some of the historic buildings remain (including the Abernethy Hotel which now operates as a guest house).
