Cessnock, New South Wales

The City of Cessnock is a local government area in the Hunter region of New South Wales, Australia. The area under administration is located to the west of Newcastle. The largest population centre and council seat is the city of Cessnock. The mayor of the City of Cessnock Council is Cr. Jay Suvaal, a member of Country Labor.

Cessnock railway station was a railway station located on the South Maitland Railway (SMR), serving the city of Cessnock, New South Wales, Australia. During its existence, it was the main station that served the city.

Cessnock City Hornets FC is a semi-professional soccer club based in Cessnock, New South Wales. The Hornets currently compete in the Northern NSW State League Division 1 with teams in First Grade, Reserve Grade, Under 18, Under 16, Under 15, Under 14 and Under 13 divisions. Northern NSW State League Division 1 is the 2nd tier of Football in Northern New South Wales Football below the National Premier Leagues Northern NSW.

The school enrolled approximately 627 students in 2024, from Year 7 to Year 12, of whom 24 percent identified as Indigenous Australians and two percent were from a language background other than English. The school is operated by the NSW Department of Education; the relieving principal is Belinda Cooper. The school is part of the Cessnock Community of Great Public Schools, a local management group consisting of 15 schools designed to improve learning, engagement and wellbeing in the region.

Cessnock Correctional Centre, an Australian minimum and maximum security prison for males, is located in Cessnock, New South Wales. It was opened in 1972 under the name Cessnock Training Centre. The centre is operated by Corrective Services NSW. It detains sentenced and remand prisoners under New South Wales and/or Commonwealth legislation. Facilities were significantly updated during 2012, including the completion of Australia's first purpose-built maximum security sex offenders unit; built at a cost of $97 million.

Established in 1985, the school enrolled approximately 880 students in 2024, from Year 7 to Year 12, of whom 22 percent identified as Indigenous Australians and five percent were from a language background other than English. The school is operated by the NSW Department of Education; the principal is Shane Hookway.

Aberdare is a suburb of Cessnock, a large town based on coal mining in the Lower Hunter Region, New South Wales, Australia. Hunter Valley Wildlife Park, formerly Hunter Valley Zoo, is a zoo in Nulkaba, New South Wales, Australia. It features a wide variety of Australian and exotic mammals, birds and reptiles. Founded in 2007 as the Hunter Valley Zoo, it went through ownership change in 2021 and in was rebranded as Hunter Valley Wildlife Park in November of that year.
