Mytton, Shropshire

The River Perry is a river in Shropshire, England. It rises near Oswestry and flows south to meet the River Severn above Shrewsbury. Along its 24 miles (39 km) length, its level drops by some 320 feet (95 m). The channel has been heavily engineered, both to enable water mills to be powered by it, and to improve the drainage of the surrounding land. There were at least seven corn mills in the 1880s, and the last one remained operational until 1966. The middle section of the river crosses Baggy Moor, where major improvements were made in 1777 to drain the moor. The scheme was one of the largest to enclose and improve land in North Shropshire, and the quality of the reclaimed land justified the high cost. A section of the river bed was lowered in the 1980s, to continue the process. The river is crossed by the Llangollen Canal, and by several bridges which are on the Listed Buildings register. It has formerly suffered from pollution, both from the discharge of poorly treated sewage from two treatment works, and from effluent from factories producing dairy products. These are now well-regulated, but the river was the scene of a major pollution incident in 1985, when pig slurry discharged into it, killing around 100,000 fish.

On 1 April 1934 the parish was abolished to form Pimhill, part also went to Montford.Fitz has a red brick church named for Saint Peter and Saint Paul, built in 1722 and restored in 1915 by Sir Aston Webb. Eighteenth-century mathematician Edward Waring is buried in the churchyard. Fitz Manor, which dates at the oldest to about 1450, is run as a bed and breakfast establishment and is grade II listed building.

Fitz Manor is a manor house in the village of Fitz near Montford Bridge, Shropshire, England. It is a Grade II* listed building.The manor, which overlooks the River Severn, was built in 1450, although the original structure is believed to have been a Saxon Hall. The manor was owned at one time by the bishop of Shrewsbury and it had its own church. In the 20th century it came into the ownership of the Baly family. The rooms are named by colours, for instance the "Red Bedroom" and "Orange Bedroom". The manor is reportedly haunted. There have been documented sightings of a homosexual priest who was purportedly crucified in the dining room, the figure of a lady in the red room and cemetery, and the ghost of a strong tobacco smoker smelt but not seen. Broomfields is a hamlet in Shropshire, England. It is located north of Montford Bridge and near to the hamlets of Forton Heath and Grafton. It is in the parish of Montford. It used to have its own 7 1/4 gauge garden railway at Broomfields Villa called Broomfields Garden Railway (BGR) from the late 1980s until 2008 when the house was sold, a video can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLkMdJS7jho Looking from Google Earth the trackbed around the field the track used to be is visible. Preston Montford, or Preston Montford Hall, is a historic house 5 miles (8 km) west of Shrewsbury in England that is used as a field studies centre by Field Studies Council. The large eighteenth-century house with later additions is set in 12 hectares (30 acres) of grassland and woodland on the banks of the River Severn. It lies within easy reach of the meres and mosses landscape of north Shropshire, as well as the varied landscapes of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is a grade II* listed building, indicating a particularly important building of more than special interest.Opened as a field studies centre in 1957, Preston Montford is visited by students of biology and geography, and by school groups. Specialist interest groups regularly visit the centre. The Open University ran its 1-week undergraduate residential course SXR216 Environmental science in the field at the centre from 2003-2011. It has developed partnerships with Manchester Metropolitan University and the Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland to tackle the decline in skills of field taxonomy through the MSc in 'Biological Recording and Ecological Surveying'. Walter Clopton Wingfield (1833-1912), later known as the pioneer of lawn tennis, grew up at Preston Montford while his father Clopton Lewis Wingfield (died 1846) lived there.
