Christie Pits riot

Christie Pits (officially Willowvale Park until 1983) is a public recreational area in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is located at 750 Bloor Street West at Christie Street, just west of the Toronto Transit Commission's Christie subway station. The park has an area of 21.9 acres (8.9 ha), about half of which is grassed picnic areas, the rest being various sports fields. Sports facilities on the site include three baseball diamonds (one full-sized and fenced named "Dominico Field"), basketball courts, a soccer/rugby/football field, and the Alex Duff Memorial Outdoor Pool; and a splash pad and adjacent outdoor ice rink which are located on the west edge of the park at 779 Crawford Street.The sides of the pits are highly sloped, as a result of which most of the area of the park sits well below street level. The slopes are used in winter for tobogganing and related activities. Garrison Creek runs under the park, converted to a storm sewer at the turn of the 20th century. The park was named after the Christie Sand Pits which were on the location until the early 1900s. The sand pits had been named after Christie Street, which was named after William Mellis Christie, co-founder of the Christie & Brown Cookie Company, now known simply as Mr. Christie. The official name of the park, Willowvale Park, never caught on, and the common name for the park since its days as a sand pit, Christie Pits, was adopted as the park's official name in 1983.

The Ukrainian Cultural Centre of Toronto was located at 83-85 Christie St., Toronto, Ontario, Canada until the building was sold in 2015. (The Centre has relocated to the Old Mill Hotel and Banquet complex since then). "Christie", as the building was simply dubbed, was host to many Ukrainian events, and was the heart of the Ukrainian community in the Greater Toronto Area, bringing together people with a common culture and ideas. The Centre was where the Ukrainian ancestral heritage was kept alive for several decades and also where English classes for newcomers and immigrants to Canada were offered. The Ukrainian Cultural Centre of Toronto consisted of a large and a small banquet hall, concert stage, full kitchen, rehearsal spaces, classrooms, library, cafeteria, "Trembita" nightclub, offices and a gymnasium. The Centre was home to the main offices of both the weekly Ukrainian language national newspaper HOMIN UKRAINY (Ukrainian Echo) and the Ukrainian Youth Association of Canada. Both these institutions were founded in 1948 by Ukrainian immigrants to Canada. From the 1970s, and through to the 1990s, the Centre was home to the Metro Toronto International Caravan Festival Ukrainian Pavilion, (originally as "Kiev," in honour of the Ukrainian national capital, then later "Lviv"). Before 1960, the building at 83 Christie St. was originally the home of the Toronto branch of the UJPO (United Jewish Peoples' Order). Currently the building is owned by the Philippine Jesus Is Lord Church.

Christie is a subway station on Line 2 Bloor–Danforth of the Toronto subway in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is located on the east side of Christie Street just north of Bloor Street West, and opened in 1966 as part of the original segment of the subway line. Wi-Fi service is available at this station.

The Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) is a contiguous urban region that is composed of some of the largest cities and metropolitan areas by population in the Canadian province of Ontario. The GTHA consists of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and the city of Hamilton. The GTA is Canada’s most populous metropolitan area that includes the city of Toronto and the regional municipalities of Halton, Peel, York, and Durham. The GTHA forms the core of a larger urban agglomeration known as the Golden Horseshoe. Beginning in the late-2000s, the term "Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area" was introduced by a few public bodies to refer to the GTA and the city of Hamilton as a single entity. The population of the combined area is 7,281,694 as of 2021, and is projected to grow to 8.6 million by 2031. The main series of roadways that connects all the areas together (going from Durham to Hamilton) includes highways 401, 427, 403, and the Queen Elizabeth Way. The GTHA has regional public transport served by GO Transit and local service by multiple agencies, which all use Presto card as fare payment.

The Elephant House is a house at 77 Yarmouth Road in the Christie Pits neighbourhood of Toronto, Ontario, Canada that has a life-size plaster mammoth sculpture in the front yard. Placed there since 2003, the sculpture is titled An Elephant in the Room and was made as a student project.

Harbord Street Bridge is one of two known bridges that once spanned Harbord Street over Garrison Creek in Toronto and was partially buried intact in the 20th Century (the other is Crawford Street Bridge to the south). The Harbord Street Bridge was a single span reinforced concrete Arch bridge built from 1909 to 1914 that carried Harbord over Garrison Creek in the area known today as Palmerston–Little Italy and for the extension of Beatrice Street to Bloor Street West. The bridge was built to allow the better means for people in the new residential development to move around the neighbourhood. The bridge crossed over the creek over from Montrose Avenue to Grace Street. The bridge bisects the Bickford Park neighbourhood with Bickford Park to the north side and Harbord Park to the south. Infilling of the area around the bridge began in 1917 and both sides were filled by the 1930, likely due to sewage being dumped into the creek following residential development, but the balustrades on either side were still exposed. Today, only the northern balustrade remains visible. Like the Crawford Street Bridge, it was not torn down but buried. The bridge, the valley, and the creek have all now disappeared underground.

Seaton Village is a neighbourhood and former village located west of Downtown Toronto in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is named after John Colborne, 1st Baron Seaton, Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada from 1828 to 1836. Seaton Village is bordered by Bloor Street to the south, the Canadian Pacific Railway tracks to the north, Christie Street to the west, and Bathurst Street to the east. Officially, it is an enclave within The Annex neighbourhood, as defined by the City of Toronto. It is sometimes referred to as the West Annex. While Seaton Village shares several characteristics with the Annex (notably its architecture and its popularity with University of Toronto students), it is often perceived as a quieter, family-oriented neighbourhood with smaller, less expensive homes. The Koreatown shopping district is at its southern border.

Central Toronto Academy (CTA); formerly Central Commerce Collegiate Institute and originally High School of Commerce and Finance is a public, semestered secondary school located in the Palmerston-Little Italy neighbourhood of Toronto, Ontario, Canada part of the Toronto District School Board. Before 1998, the school was part of the former Toronto Board of Education. The school was founded in 1911 as an offshoot of the Central Technical School. The eight commercial classes which had been taking place in Central Tech were first moved to King Edward Public School and then to Clinton Street Public School. In 1916, the classes were moved into a permanent home when the Collegiate Gothic Central High School of Commerce building opened as a school of business and commerce on Shaw Street. Over the years it has developed into a composite school that offers a broad range of programs, complemented by a full range of core academic subjects, computer classes, music, art, drama, and health and physical education. Courses are offered at the University, University/College and College levels for grade 12 students. Central Commerce Collegiate was renamed to Central Toronto Academy in September 2014.

Harbord Collegiate Institute (HCI or Harbord) is a public secondary school located in downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The school is located in the Palmerston-Little Italy-Annex neighbourhood, situated on the north side of Harbord Street, between Euclid Avenue and Manning Street. From the 1920s to the 1950s, about 90 per cent of the student body was Jewish, while today the student body largely consists of students of East Asian and Portuguese descent.

Snakes & Lattes is a board game cafe chain headquartered in Toronto, Canada, with three Toronto venues located at 600 Bloor Street West, 489 College Street, and 45 Eglinton Avenue East. The first American Snakes & Lattes opened in 2018 in Tempe, AZ. Other locations are being developed and should be opening starting in 2019.Guests pay a small cover charge to play board games for as long as they like, choosing from the cafe's collection of 1,000 - 3,000 games, depending on location. There was no wi-fi available at the original cafe when it first opened as the focus is on playing games and socialising with friends, however, public wi-fi was installed in all locations to accommodate those who wished to use their computers and specifically the morning business and student crowd. The cafes serve food and beverage items, including numerous local draft beers.

Palmerston-Little Italy is a neighbourhood in central Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Its boundaries, according to the City of Toronto, are by Bathurst Street to the east, Bloor Street to the north, Dovercourt Road to the west and College Street to the south. It is a mature downtown neighbourhood. Within this official neighbourhood of the City of Toronto are two neighbourhoods, Palmerston and Little Italy and the commercial enclave of Mirvish Village.
