Fanson Castle

The Battle of Amblève took place in 716 near Amel. The mayor of the palace of Austrasia, Charles Martel, defeated his Neustrian and Frisian rivals who were led by King Chilperic II, his mayor Ragenfrid, and Redbad, King of the Frisians. It was the first major victory of Martel in a long career of victories. In this battle Martel began demonstrating the military genius which would mark the remainder of his life.

It was a municipality of its own from its creation on 21 May 1886 (by the merger of parts of the municipalities of Aywaille and Sprimont) until the merger of municipalities in 1977.

Its area consists of 45.7% of wooded and wild country, 29.9% of agricultural areas and 24.4% of built-up areas.The inhabitants of Aywaille are called the "Aqualiens", from the Latin version of Aywaille "Aqualia loca", which means "area full of water" or "muddy land".The municipality consists of the following districts: Aywaille, Ernonheid, Harzé, and Sougné-Remouchamps. Ferrières (French pronunciation: [fɛʁjɛʁ] (listen); Walloon: Ferire) is a municipality of Wallonia located in the province of Liège, Belgium. On January 1, 2006, Ferrières had a total population of 4,449. The total area is 56.90 km² with a population density of 78 inhabitants per km². The municipality consists of the following districts: Ferrières, My (pronounced "Mee"), Vieuxville (including the hamlet of Sy), Werbomont, and Xhoris.

Sprimont (French pronunciation: ​[spʁimɔ̃]; Walloon: Sprumont) is a municipality of Wallonia located in the province of Liège, Belgium. The municipality consists of the following districts: Dolembreux, Gomzé-Andoumont, Louveigné, Rouvreux, and Sprimont. Other villages: Banneux, Damré, Florzé, Lincé, Ogné, Presseux, and Rivage. On January 1, 2006, Sprimont had a total population of 12,782. The total area is 74.2 square kilometres (28.6 sq mi) which gives a population density of 172 inhabitants/km2 (450 inhabitants/sq mi).

Hamoir (French pronunciation: [amwaʁ]; Walloon: Hamwer) is a municipality of Wallonia located in the province of Liège, Belgium. On 1 January 2006, Hamoir had a total population of 3,592. The total area is 27.80 km2 which gives a population density of 129 inhabitants per km2. Hamoir is situated on the river Ourthe. The municipality consists of the following districts: Comblain-Fairon, Filot, and Hamoir.

Hamoir station serves the municipality of Hamoir, Wallonia, located in the province of Liège, Belgium. The station is located at kilometer point (PK) 23.40 on along the Ourthe line from Angleur to Marloie, between Comblain-la-Tour and Sy stations. The station is 119m above sea-level.

The Battle of Sprimont, or Battle of the Ourthe (18 Sep 1794), was a battle during the War of the First Coalition between a corps of the French revolutionary Army of Sambre-and-Meuse under General Jean-Baptiste Jourdan, and the left wing of an Austrian army under the François Sebastien Charles Joseph de Croix, Count of Clerfayt. The battle was fought to outflank and force the Austrian army away from their defensive line on the Meuse river, and was a French victory.

The Côte de La Redoute is a climb, often included in the Liège–Bastogne–Liège cycle route. It is located in Wallonia in the municipality of Aywaille and its incline is 1.6 km long with an average of 9.5%. It is named after a redoubt in the battle of Sprimont, which occurred at the village of Fontin, which is located on it, in the municipality of Esneux. It also runs along an access route to autoroute E25 level with the town of Remouchamps. The region is the birthplace of cyclist Philippe Gilbert.

Esneux (French pronunciation: ​[ɛsnø]; Walloon: Esneu) is a municipality of Wallonia located in the province of Liège, Belgium. On 1 January 2006 Esneux had a total population of 13,072. The total area is 34.05 km2 (13.15 sq mi) which gives a population density of 384 inhabitants per km². The municipality consists of the following districts: Esneux and Tilff. Other villages are Méry and Hony. They are all to be found in the valley of the Ourthe river south of Liège. A railway line links the 4 villages (and then continues further south to Luxembourg). Although not popular with large numbers of international tourists, Esneux and Tilff do attract people from the local region, due to the local restaurants, the Esneux and Tilff castle, the bee-museum, and several parks. In Esneux, the largest giant sequoia of Belgium can be found.
