Crossair Flight 3597 was a scheduled flight from Berlin Tegel Airport, Germany, to Zürich Airport, Switzerland. On 24 November 2001, the Crossair Avro RJ100 operating the route, registered as HB-IXM, crashed into a wooded range of hills near Bassersdorf and caught fire. Out of the 33 occupants, nine made it out alive.: 12

Bassersdorf is a railway station in the Swiss canton of Zurich and the municipality of Bassersdorf. The station is located on the Zurich to Winterthur main line, to the east of where the Zürich Airport and Kloten lines diverge. It is an intermediate stop on the Zurich S-Bahn services S7 and S24.The original route of the railway was through the centre of Bassersdorf. But with the construction of a new railway to serve Zürich Airport in 1980, this route was abandoned along with the original Bassersdorf railway station from 1877, built by Schweizerische Nationalbahn. A new station was constructed on the new line, some 500 m (1,600 ft) to the south of the original station.

Kloten is a railway station in the Swiss canton of Zurich and municipality of Kloten. The station is located on the Zurich to Winterthur line and is an intermediate stop on Zurich S-Bahn line S7.Although the station is situated only 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) from the main terminal of Zurich Airport, it has been bypassed by the opening, in 1980, of a new line directly serving the Zürich Airport railway station in the basement of that terminal. Kloten is now only visited by the S7 and freight trains, while all other passenger trains on the line serve the airport.
