Somerset is a rural town located at the junction of Bucks Bar Road, Grizzly Flat Road, and Mount Aukum Road. The town has a small store, the Gold Vine Bistro, the Crossroads Cafe, a small storage facility, and a post office. Most of the land in the Somerset area is divided into ten acre properties. The main roads are asphalt but almost all of the other roads and driveways are dirt/rock. The main business in the area comes from the many boutique wineries and wine tourism. The post office was transferred from Youngs to Somerset in 1950. The first settlers came from Somerset, Ohio and named the place after their hometown.

Fair Play (formerly, Fairplay) is an unincorporated community in El Dorado County, California. It is located 4.5 miles (7.2 km) northeast of Aukum, at an elevation of 2329 feet (710 m). Fair Play was a mining town in the 1850s, transitioning to a farming economy by the 1880s. The Fair Play Cemetery remains open and active today. In more recent years the Fair Play area has become known for its wineries; the Fair Play AVA was established in 2001 and has become a local travel destination for small accommodations, vineyards and wineries with well over 20 properties. A post office was operated at Fair Play from 1860 to 1944.

Fair Play is an American Viticultural Area (AVA) located in El Dorado County, California. It was established as the nation's 139th, the state's 84th and the county's third appellation on February 26, 2001 by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) after reviewing the petition submitted by Brian Fitzpatrick, President of Fair Play Winery Association, proposing a viticultural area in southern El Dorado County known as "Fair Play." The viticultural area encompasses 21,000 acres (33 sq mi) encircling the town of Fair Play and located entirely within the existing boundaries of the El Dorado and vast Sierra Foothills AVAs. The topography of Fair Play includes rolling hills at elevations between 2,000 and 3,000 feet (610–910 m) above sea level, making it the second highest average elevation after Squaw Valley-Miramonte viticultural area in the state. The soils are decomposed granite as part of the Sierra Nevada Foothills region, and the area is within the Cosumnes River watershed. In its cultivated 350 acres (140 ha), the most popular red wine grape variety is Zinfandel, although varieties popular in Rhône Valley and Italy, such as Syrah, Grenache, Petite Sirah, Mourvedre, Sangiovese, Tempranillo and Barbera are the common varietals. White wine is less popular in Fair Play, but significant plantings of Viognier and Grenache Blanc, along with Sauvignon Blanc are most common.

A post office operated at Newtown from 1854 to 1912, with a closure in 1875.Notable residents have included John Augustus Raffetto, father of radio star Michael Raffetto. The Raffetto home is now a bed and breakfast and offers a room in the name of that family.

The Fiddletown AVA is an American Viticultural Area in Amador County, California, United States. The region was first settled in 1849, during the California Gold Rush. Settlers who stayed in the area eventually planted grape vines, which became abundant by the end of the nineteenth century. Most of the vineyards in the Fiddletown AVA are located in the south and west portion of the region, at elevations between 1,500 feet (457 m) and 2,500 feet (762 m) above sea level. About 20% of the wine produced in Amador County comes from Fiddletown AVA.

Diamond Springs (formerly, Diamond Spring and Diamond) is a census-designated place (CDP) in El Dorado County, California, United States. It is part of the Sacramento–Arden-Arcade–Roseville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 11,037 at the 2010 census, up from 4,888 at the 2000 census. The town is registered as California Historical Landmark number 487. It lies at an elevation of 1791 feet (546 m).
