Lake Clementine (also known as North Fork Lake) is a reservoir on the North Fork American River Canyon above the picturesque, California Gold Rush-era town of Auburn (elevation 1,200 feet (370 m)) in Northern California. It was created in 1939 when the North Fork Dam, a 155-foot (47 m) tall constant angle arch dam, was completed by the United States Army Corps of Engineers, for the purpose of containing gold-mining debris which were washing downriver. This resulting reservoir is a long and narrow lake approximately 3.5 miles long and 300 feet wide in some areas. The lake and surrounding area is owned by the United States Bureau of Reclamation and managed by California Department of Parks and Recreation.

Cool, formerly known as Cave Valley, is a small town in El Dorado County, California, about 40 miles (64 km) from Sacramento, the state capital. The Middle Fork American River is one of three forks that form the American River in Northern California. It drains a large watershed in the high Sierra Nevada west of Lake Tahoe and northeast of Sacramento in Placer and El Dorado Counties, between the watersheds of the North Fork American River and South Fork American River. The Middle Fork joins with the North Fork near Auburn and they continue downstream to Folsom Lake as the North Fork, even though the Middle Fork carries a larger volume of water. The Middle Fork was one of the richest gold mining areas during the California Gold Rush of the 1850s, and is still recreationally mined today. The river is dammed extensively to produce hydroelectricity and provide domestic water supply. Although long stretches of the Middle Fork have been dewatered by diversions, the portion of the river and canyon in the Auburn State Recreation Area is one of the state's most popular whitewater runs. Professional whitewater rafting companies offer guided trips on the Middle Fork American river from May to October. The Middle Fork canyon also has an extensive system of hiking and riding trails including the Western States Trail, which stretches 100 miles (160 km) from Auburn to Lake Tahoe.

Clipper Gap (also, Clippergap) is an unincorporated community in Placer County, California. Clipper Gap is located 6 miles (9.7 km) north-northeast of Auburn. It lies at an elevation of 1676 feet (511 m).The first transcontinental railroad reached Clipper Gap in 1865, and local mills supplied black powder and lime for use in railroad construction. The town began to decline after the railroad's construction was complete, and the town later became a service stop on the Lincoln Highway. Today Clipper Gap is a rural residential area.The Clipper Gap post office opened in 1866, changed its name to Clippergap in 1894, reverted its name to Clipper Gap in 1950, and closed permanently in 1960.

The Foresthill Bridge, also referred to as the Auburn-Foresthill Bridge or the Auburn Bridge, is a road bridge crossing over the North Fork American River in Placer County and the Sierra Nevada foothills, in eastern California. It is the highest bridge by deck height in California, the fourth highest in the United States, and among the seventy highest in the world at 730 feet (220 m) above the river.

The Mountain Quarries Bridge is a railroad bridge across the North Fork American River, near Auburn, spanning between El Dorado and Placer counties. It is a concrete arch bridge that was built in 1912 to transport quarried rock.

Auburn State Recreation Area is a state park unit of California, along 40 miles (64 km) of the North and Middle Forks of the American River. The state recreation area (SRA) is situated on the border of Placer and El Dorado Counties in the heart of historic Gold Country. The largest city with close proximity is the city of Auburn. Once teeming with gold mining activity, the area now offers a wide variety of outdoor recreational opportunities. Major recreational uses include trail running, hiking, swimming, boating, fishing, camping, mountain biking, gold panning, horseback riding, road bicycling, and off-highway motorcycle riding. Whitewater recreation is also very popular on both forks of the river, with Class II, III and IV runs. Auburn SRA is also known as the location of a number of endurance races that are hosted throughout the year.

Applegate is an unincorporated community in Placer County, California. It is 7.25 mi (11,670 m) south-southwest of Colfax, and 9.3 mi (15.0 km) northeast of Auburn. The city's msl elevation is 2,005 ft (611 m). Its ZIP code is 95703 and its area code 530. Applegate was originally settled in 1849 by Lisbon Applegate, who came to California with his son, George, from Missouri. Part of a family that first emigrated to America in the 17th century, the Applegates bought acreage above Clipper Gap, California, and established a fruit ranch there. The main house of the Applegate Ranch was where Oliver's gas station and bar sits today. Lisbon eventually returned to Missouri but his son, George W. Applegate, stayed. As the town grew, it was called Bear River House for its proximity to the Bear River, a short distance northwest. When a post office was established in 1855, the community officially became known as Lisbon in honor of its founder. George W. Applegate became postmaster, and in the 1870s, the settlement was renamed Applegate, also to honor its founder.At one time, Applegate was a station on the Central Pacific Railroad (later Southern Pacific). When a second track was added in 1929, the station on the eastbound track was named East Applegate. The tracks are separated by about .25 mi (0.40 km). From Placer GOLD, November 1973; "Applegate is a quiet little town about eight miles northeast of Auburn, rudely severed in two parts by Interstate 80. Applegate is also the only known place in Northern California where the Ladyfoot Trumpet flower grows wild. Some people believe that its seeds were left here long ago when the Lemurians passed through on their way to Mount Shasta.

Bowman is an unincorporated community in Placer County, California. Bowman is located on the Southern Pacific Railroad, 3.25 miles (5.2 km) north-northeast of Auburn. It lies at an elevation of 1617 feet (493 m).The Bowman post office opened in 1893. The name honors Harry Hoisington Bowman, fruit grower.
