Charfield railway station

The Charfield railway disaster was a fatal train crash which occurred on 13 October 1928 in the village of Charfield in the English county of Gloucestershire. The Leeds to Bristol London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) night mail train failed to stop at the signals protecting the down refuge siding at Charfield railway station. The weather was misty, but there was not a sufficiently thick fog for the signalman at Charfield to employ fog signalmen. A freight train was in the process of being shunted from the down main line to the siding, and another train of empty goods wagons was passing through the station from the Bristol (up) direction. The mail train collided with the freight train and was derailed, coming into collision with the up train underneath the road bridge to the north of the station. Gas used to light the carriages ignited, and four carriages were burnt out. The driver and fireman of the mail train claimed that they had seen a clear distant signal on approach to the station, and therefore had assumed that the home signals protecting the station were also clear; however, testing of the signals after the accident confirmed that the distant had been correctly in the yellow "caution" position. The driver and fireman were charged with manslaughter, but were subsequently acquitted.

It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. It stands on a steep hillside overlooking a valley.

Wickwar railway station served the village of Wickwar in South Gloucestershire, England. The station was on the Bristol and Gloucester Railway, originally a broad gauge line overseen by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, but later taken over by the Midland Railway and converted to standard gauge. Wickwar station opened with the Bristol and Gloucester line in 1844 and had Brunel designed buildings on the down platform towards Bristol, but only a small hut on the up platform. The platforms were narrow and the station was situated high on an embankment just north of the tunnel that ran beneath the village itself. There were sidings and a goods yard to the south, between the station and the tunnel. Passenger services were withdrawn from Wickwar in January 1965 with the removal of stopping services on the Bristol to Gloucester line. Goods services had been withdrawn in June 1963. The main station buildings were demolished, though the station master's house remains.

Slickstones Quarry, Cromhall (grid reference ST704916) is a 2.7 hectare geological Site of Special Scientific Interest near the village of Cromhall, South Gloucestershire, England notified in 1966. The site shows red Triassic rocks in fissures of older carboniferous limestone.The quarry is home to South West Maritime Academy, offering both Diving and Open Water Swimming in the 4 hectare quarry lake as well as a broader site use for commercial maritime safety training by the Academy including STCW, STCW Update, marine engineering and deckhand courses as well as various RYA course offerings. The lake can be used by diving trainees as there is a sloping entry (former road) and a pontoon which is also used as an entry point for the swimmers.

The Battle of Nibley Green was fought near North Nibley in Gloucestershire on 20 March 1470, between the troops of Thomas Talbot, 2nd Viscount Lisle and William Berkeley, 2nd Baron Berkeley. It is notable for being the last battle fought in England entirely between the private armies of feudal magnates.

The abbey was demolished during the Dissolution of the Monasteries, and all that remains is the gatehouse, a Grade 1 listed building. Through the gatehouse arch are a few houses and the small village primary school of Kingswood.

It is southwest of Wotton-under-Edge and has a population of 1,290, increasing to 1,395 at the 2011 Census.The village is located on the edge of the Cotswolds. Kingswood was formerly a detached part of Wiltshire that was incorporated into Gloucestershire by the Counties (Detached Parts) Act 1844.Kingswood Abbey was a Cistercian abbey on the northeast edge of the village. The abbey was founded in 1139 by William Berkeley, in accordance with the wishes of his uncle, Roger II of Berkeley, and colonised from the Cistercian house at Tintern. All that survives today is the 16th-century gatehouse, which is under the care of English Heritage.
